It's that time again: June! What wargames are you playing? Who are you playing with? If it is ongoing, how is the game going? How did you enjoy it? Inquiring minds want to know!

And to borrow from Peter, this month there is a bonus: anyone playing a D-Day themed game will receive ridiculously low GG tips from yours truly! (No, don't everybody thank me at once!!!)

Now to promote some Geeklists:

Looking for an online opponent? Is there a game you really want to play but can't find an opponent? Go to the
VASSAL/Cyberboard/SKYPE request list.

Help the BGG Database of Wargames:
Check out this Geeklist and look through the list of war games that do not have a review. If you are willing and able, pick one out and get it on the table if need be, or write a review for it

Help a traveling wargamer:
Know a good store that sells wargames? Add it to the War Games FLGS Directory, so when others are there, they can support the store.

What games did you acquire last month?
Share the joy. Geeklist is here.

My solitaire game of choice this month is WestFront. I learned EastFront II and helped my buddy Bart with a Dice Tower vid for it. So when I saw this on the clearance table of my favorite wargame store in Oklahoma City, I couldn't pass it up. I figure it's going to use a similar system, which worked nicely in EastFront.

The obsession continues.

Kevin and I are in our second full-length game. This time, instead of 1942, we started on December 7. He had a better-than historical attack at Pearl Harbor and then conquered the Philippines in a month. He took out all Malayan and U.S. naval and air units in the southwestern Pacific. This time, he also made sure to take out my Marines at Wake Island, but not before they put a hit on his carrier (ooh rah!).

After that, he opened 1942 with a really bad hand. He started moving throughout the Dutch East Indies and then made a strong effort to take out New Guinea. He conquered Port Moresby, but I still have Gili Gili. But the good news for me was that he was not able to conquer Borneo and over in North Africa, Patton pasted Rommel, freeing up a LOT of reinforcements for me to secure Rangoon (Burma) and the last oil resource hex in Borneo.

Barteus and I are in early 1776. I am the Americans. The militia have come from near and far to rally to the cause of liberty. But he did successfully invaded Philadelphia in late 1775, but Boston is mine and New York is secure (so far).

I am in both of my PBEM games.

Lars and I are farther along (summer '42). He hit me with the double whammy of Torch and Montgomery, which has me scrambling. I'm close to pulling off Herkules, but that won't do if I can't keep him out of Tripoli.

In my other game, we are in summer '41. This is the fun part of the game when you are the Axis. I'm pounding away at Egypt.

We are just entering 1758, but in the very first round the Halley's Comet event happened so we are in Wider War. The strategic situation is interesting. My French have taken several minor fortresses plus Hannover, but Ferdinand has assumed command of the British and has a base of operations in Stade to the north. Larz's Prussians have captured Prague and Eger from the Austrians, but Jon's Austrians have countered by moving into Silesia and taking Glatz and Breslau. My Russians spent the Fall of 1757 taking reinforcements, stockpiling supplies, and using light units to devastate East Prussia. Now the Bear is ready to move on the tough nut that is Koenigsberg and, with luck, destinations further west. We're all flush with troops at the beginning of the new year, so I fear blood will be spilled . . .

We just finished the first turn (415BC) in the campaign game. My Athenians sent the first expedition to Sicily, but other than that we mostly just reinforced units as the Peace of Nicias is still in effect. I can see a lot of potential here, but I do still have this nagging feeling that I am messing up rules. I wish the rule book were a little less concise in places.

My game with my brother continues and things are looking dire. We just started Turn 9 and my Americans are at -7 VP to the Evil Empire. He just used a devastating card combo (Muslim Revolution was involved) to wipe out much of my influence in the Middle East.

I should feel fortunate to still be playing as he drew a perfect combination to start the turn. He had both "How I Learned to Stop Worrying" (set Defcon to any level) and "Wargames" (if at Defcon 2 give your opponent 6 VP and end the game immediately). With a 7 point lead this was a perfect combination so he headlined "How I Learned to Stop Worrying." But I headlined "Five-Year Plan" and randomly pulled "Wargames"! I'm shamed to say that my very own younger brother used some most foul language when that happened.

I have taken the role of the glorious French.

We are still in the diplomacy phase of the first turn of the Tournament scenario so not much has happened yet. I have allied with Spain and married Marguerite de Valois to Philip plus arranged a marriage between Henry III and one of the HRE beauties. I've asked the others to please not interrupt our nuptially-inspired merrymaking with sordid activities like war and preaching. It would just be in poor taste.

The blood-letting Battle of Borodino, the ultimate conquer of the Winter Palace, until the disaster at the Gate of Moscow, all await us to experience in the beginning of this summer.

I am looking forward to play many Napoleonic wargames in the month of June.

AirJudden and I are in the early stages of a PBeM game. I think this is going to be the type of game that I'll have to extensively reference the rules for the first play, to get down the icons on the cards and rolls - and after that, it should be clear and smooth sailing.

I must compliment the game designer on the excellent Training Manual - a very detailed and illustrated example of play.

Right now, I am the Japanese player and I have a strike force headed for Midway. Surely nothing bad can happen in that scenario, right?

Columbia block games are excellent wargames in my opinion - light and easy rules, but surprising depth of play.

Playing via PBeM versus AirJudden - I am the British and just completed that horrible first turn without reinforcements. We evacuated Boston and used our dominance of the seas to take Baltimore. We must crush the rebels!

I've been playing a live VASSAL game split up over multiple sessions with some very savvy high school students from Illinois and their history teacher. We will be resuming tomorrow night, if anyone wants to pop in and observe (and join the Skype call).

We have finished 4 turns of the Campaign Scenario. The Protestant space count is only at 33, but the scores are:

Protestants 23
Holy Roman Empire 22
Spain 19
England 19
France 19
Ottomans 18

Cleanup on aisle France! My country is in shambles, and I've suffered the humiliation of having the Catholic League form. It would look even worse had I not used Grand Tour late in Turn 4 to remove unrest from about 8 spaces! Coligny and his Huguenot rabble occupy Paris. The HRE flirted with an auto-win, getting down to one key needed, but some diplomatic upheaval threw Venice back to Spain's embrace and landed the Papacy in my lap. Spain is knocking on England's doorstep, having activated Ireland and gotten some Catholic conversions from a modest English Catholic Rebellion success. New World piracy has had a remarkable number of failures given the complete Spanish disinterest in defending those waters. The Ottomans dug the Suez Canal, but have been quiet since due to some anemic hands of cards. Unless something drastic happens, I think the Protestants have a stranglehold on the game. It would probably be over already if their sea captain Laudonniere had completed a circumnavigation back in Turn 3--he died on the very last navigation roll needed to complete the journey (haha).

Here's the map:

Check out the power cards. It looks like someone vomited a bunch of VP markers on the HRE's bonus box. Yes, that's England sitting on 3 +1 Card markers, and--preposterously--2 Virginia Dare VPs. Schwendi, Henry III, and Henry of Navarre have all died at the hands of assassins (there is a module problem with the Henry III power card overlay, it's supposed to show that he's dead and my card bonus is down to 0).

It has been great fun despite my rapidly deteriorating standing in the game!
