This is a list of 18xx games, with information on how many copies of each there have been released.

There's not much hard data, so many of the numbers here are approximations or estimates (and some may be no more than rumours). I've tried to include all the sources, so you can judge the quality of the data.

I have been meaning to add to this discussion for some time but have finally dug up some records. A history of my 18GA and 18AL game kits follows. Sorry for the length.

I was able to purchase extra 1870 tile sheets from Mayfair and used those for most of the tiles when I produced the first game kits in the late nineties. I purchased a wide carriage inkjet printer and printed one sheet paper maps on special 13"x19" paper. I produced passable shares, stock chart and other game components using Microsoft Publisher (never tried Corel Draw which is what Chris Lawson used at the time). I also used Publisher to create the map and the game specific tiles needed for each game. The game files were fairly amateurish compared to what is out there now, but it was wide open territory back in the nineties. My original rules referred to the published Avalon Hill 1830 rules and mainly described the special rules and privates for each game. I tried to respect the copyrights by crediting Francis Tresham in my rules and sent him a couple of copies of each as Chris Lawson used to do. One year at one of Anthony Carver’s MidSumCons, Francis Tresham walked in and was taught to play 18AL at one of the other tables, which was pretty cool.

I used to sell comic books part time in the nineties and at some point got a VISA/MC account which allowed me to take credit card payments for my game kit sales for 18AL and 18GA. This and reasonable international shipping options from the USPS allowed me to sell game kits internationally back then. Of course this was way before Paypal. I began to track my sales and kept records in old receipt books. Over the years, I have lost at least the first one I used but have found the last two I seemed to have used. When I started sending out copies, I numbered and signed the catalog envelope which I had printed locally that contained everything. Through these receipt books, the highest numbers contain a good guess of what my actual sales were. The missing receipt book covered my earliest sales of 18GA from 1999 and my last mail order sales of both must have been in August 2001. The numbers would not include a few copies I traded or provided at my earliest Chattanooga Rail Gaming Challenges from the 90s. I remember taking some leftover copies with my on my first trip to Essen in October 2001 which I quickly sold or traded to folks I had met online.

Of the orders I have records of; I sent quite a few game kits to Europe, at least 43 from my incomplete records plus at least 2 to Japan. The countries in Europe I shipped to include Austria, Germany, Denmark, England, Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium.
I produced a limited edition of 12 numbered, hand painted ready to play 18AL’s in March 2000 which were numbered separately. I remember announcing it on whatever that board was that preceded the Yahoo Group and selling out in two hours!

After I quit selling game kits I was approached by John David Galt who offered to produce new versions of 18AL and 18GA based on my original files. He eventually produced some new components and overhauled my rules into a more comprehensive document. He tells me in the years he produced and shipped copies; he sold "80-100 of each" according to John. The 18AL and 18GA files were posted after that to allow print and play versions. Wolfram Janich produced German language versions of 18AL and 18GA between about 2004 and 2012 and he recently estimated that he had sold "20-30" copies during that time, so call it maybe 15 of each. On BGG, users have created play aids including various versions of the maps which can still be downloaded as far as I know. Another BGG user, Andrew Tullsen, has produced a ready to play version of 18AL using the Euro style graphics of user "Coryo". Andrew tells me that since 2004, he has sold maybe ~70 copies of 18AL (I didn’t know it had been that long, but oh well). With all that in mind, the following is a best guess of sales of 18AL and 18GA:

18GA 138 copies by me between 1998/1999 and 2001
90 copies by John Galt
15 copies in German by Wolfram Janich
Total of around 243 copies

18AL 106 copies by me in 2000-2001
90 copies by John Galt
12 special edition ready to play copies
15 copies in German by Wolfram Janich
70 copies by Andrew Tullsen using updated graphics (still available for sale)
Total of around 293 copies

Of course this does not account for a few un-numbered copies I have traded or given out as prizes over the years, not to mention the print and play files which have been largely available for years. I had asked John Galt to take the files down for 18GA at least because 18Dixie, when or if it ever comes out will include a reprint of 18GA as a subset of a larger area map which would use overlays to isolate it similar to 1841 Lite as produced by DeepThought Games. There are a few fan based electronic versions of each that I am not very familiar with either.

It is hard for me to gauge the current overall reaction to 18GA and 18AL. I don’t get to play as much 18xx as I’d like and what I do play is mostly at conventions. There, the emphasis seems to be more on major new mechanisms like the short selling in 1817 or the different train types in 1862. Straightforward games like 18GA and 18AL may seem quaint to many new players learning these new 18xx games. I still think shorter games like 18GA and 18AL have a place for newer players at least. As I see these dates, I believe I will try to include some special events at the 2015 Chattanooga Rail Gaming Challenge featuring 18AL. It looks like 2015 will be about the 15th anniversary of my publication of the original 18AL at least. At least one ready to play copy of 18AL will be available as a prize next year and I am working with Andrew Tullsen to produce a special version of it for me to display at the convention.
