OK everyone -- here is my first geeklisk. Please go easy on me.

Now most people are aware of the popular geeklist by Sonja of games playable with a standard deck of cards. A very useful list. At the risk of flames of piracy, I wanted to create a MASTER LIST of card games that are playable with a modified (or unmodified) STANDARD deck of cards. Modification rules include (but are not limited to):

Multiple decks of standard cards.

Marking up cards with *simple* symbols, numbers, or letters.

Addition of simple playing pieces (i.e. dominos, counters, poker chips, bits from easily aquired thrift-store games).

Variants of games playable with a single deck of cards.

Games playable with a 5-suit, 6-suit deck (i.e. rage, 6-nimmt, and similar geeklist items).

This list should NOT include the following:

(Standard card games using a single deck of cards)
***Update: as I've been adding games that require two decks, etc..., I've eliminated this restriction and am allowing ALL GAMES (EASILY) PLAYABLE WITH A STANDARD DECK OF CARDS.

The following restriction still applies:

Marking-up cards with large amounts of text (i.e. MtG) should NOT be listed.

Now a word about piracy. Please use this list as a reference to *try* out games that you may find appealing. Many of us waste a ton of money on games we have never played that we've seen on BGG that end up not beoing our cup-of-tea. This list will allow us to temporarily make some homemade versions of card games that look interesting *before* we go out and buy them. Am I making myself clear here? If you enjoy the game -- please, PLEASE support the designer.

Please add and please tip if you found this geeklist useful!

I haven't actually tried this yet but I think you could make Jaipur work with a Rage deck and some poker chips with stickers. That is ignoring the numbers and using the six suits as the six types of good and maybe use ones for camels, something along those lines.

With this PDF for the map. and color pencils.

One deck is for the routes and one deck of the the destinations. But it could be played with only one deck too.

Like Werewolf? You'll love this...

From the introduction:

The Resistance is a tense and thrilling party game of social deduction. It is designed for five to twelve players, lasts about 30 minutes, and may be played with an ordinary deck of cards. The Resistance is inspired by Mafia/Werewolf, yet enhanced with new core mechanics that increase the levels of informed decision and player interaction, while eliminating player elimination.

To get 20 "blue beans" you'd need 5 decks of cards (ugh). I supose you could double up on a couple of cards and do it with 3 decks, but this would complicate things.

You need 2 decks (at least 64 cards). One deck makes the chess board by using a face-down card for the dark spaces and the negative space for the light spaces. 32 cards are used for the spaces.

Then the two players are Red v Black. The 10s are Rooks, Jacks are Knights, Aces are Bishops, one Queen is the Queen, and one King is the King. The Pawns are made up of the 2-9 cards of one suit (or a mix of the two suits if you prefer).

Game plays like normal chess.

Remove all cards from the deck except three each of the following:

King = Duke

Jack = Ambassador
Two = Captain

Last one doesn't have to be a two, but makes most sense. Ambassador
and Captain could be switched if you feel like it.

Two decks of cards are needed. Aces are $10,000 banknotes, 2's are $20,000 banknotes, etc. Pull the correct distribution of cards for the game deck.

Colored dice are the only other component needed. Mark each casino with an appropriately facing die from an unused die color, or use some other method to mark each pile of cards with the corresponding die face.

22. Board Game: Morels [Average Rating:7.01 Overall Rank:689]
Board Game: Morels
The theme and the artwork for this one are truly charming, so you are really much better off just buying the game. But, if, say you are camping and you've forgotten to bring your copy of the game along (or you didn't want to risk it getting damaged), you can play this with a few standard decks.

If you're willing to mark up the cards, you can get an exact mapping of a Morels deck onto 4 decks of standard playing cards. If, like me, you'd prefer not to mark up the cards, and you're okay with a very slight change in the card distribution, then you could try the following three deck solution.

Use cards 2 thru 10 in the Hearts, Diamonds, and Clubs suits to represent the mushrooms being collected. You will have nine [1] 2's, eight 3's, six 4's, five 5's, four 6's, four 7's, four 8's, four 9's, and three 10's. [2]

For the night cards, use one card of each rank from 2 thru 9 in the Spades suit. [3]

For the poison mushrooms, use five Jokers. For the baskets, use five of the Aces. For the pans, use all twelve of the Jacks. For the butter, use three Queens. And, for the cider, use three Kings. For walking sticks, use coins, or poker chips, or what have you. You'll need about 20 of them.

And, there we have a very slightly modified distribution of the cards in a Morels deck, using three standard decks.

So, now the question becomes "If you don't mark the cards, how do you remember the point values of the cards and the number of sticks each card gives?" This will not be an exact match, but it should be close enough and it's pretty simple to remember[4] :

The point value of the card is half its rank, rounded down;
the number of sticks for each card is one(1) for even ranks and two(2) for odd ranks.

So, for example, the 9's are worth 9/2 = 4.5, rounded down, equals 4 points; since it's an odd rank, it is also worth two sticks. So the 9's are worth 4|2.[5]

You'll just have to remember that the 10's are worth 6|4.

The night card values are just two times the day card values; the number of sticks doesn't change.

[1] There are ten 2's (honey fungus) cards in the published game.

[2] If you think it will be hard to remember how many of each rank should be in the deck (I'm sure I'd forget easily enough), and you're willing to adjust the distribution ever so slightly more, try this: use nine 2's, eight 3's, seven 4's, six 5's, five 6's, and four each of 7's, 8's, and 9's, plus three 10's. The rule of thumb is to use all of the non-spade 2's, then use one less card per successive rank, going down to a minimum of 4 cards, and then only use three 10's. Simple.

[3] You're not really supposed to see the faces of the night cards in the forest, but I think it would be fine if you do see them. If you simply must keep them facedown, you'll need to mark the backs of the cards.

[4] If you don't mind not having nearly identical scoring to the original game, you can use an even simpler scoring system: The point value of the card is its rank. In this case, Butter is worth 6 (you could probably use 5) and Cider is worth 10. Morels score 12 points each.

[5] This rule breaks down for rank 8 which is supposed to be worth 3|3, not 4|1. So, the rule covers 8 of the 9 cards correctly and misses on one. You can either remember the special case and score 3|3, or you can just keep it simple and use the 4|1. I would choose the latter.

Note: If this were a strictly traditional card game, I think "Forage" would be a good name...
