A man (or woman) kicks down your front door, puts a zucchini to your head, and says, "I don't like you. I don't like your damn games. You can only keep one game - the rest are coming with me. AND you can never have another game."

Ok, that's totally implausible, but...

What's the one game you keep? Do you keep a game that you think you'll enjoy playing for the last 60 (or 50, 40, 30, whatever) years of your life? Or do you keep a game that's worth hundreds on ebay? Do you keep Citadels so you can torture your friends with a terrible game? Or do you hang on to Arkham Horror so each game you play will take up 5% of your lifespan?

This is my choice, simply because I haven't gotten tired of it and I think it will still play differently years from now. I know there are many people who are sick of it after playing hundreds of games online, but I can't see that happening for me. It would help, though, if I had any friends living near me who don't loathe the game.

AND because it's my list, I get to add my second choice, because the Zucchini Man didn't check behind my dishwasher, which is where I hide my copy of Rette Sich, obviously, in case someone breaks in and steals my games.

I'd pick Rette Sich because the pretty boats, fun voting and general nastiness of the game appeals to a wide range of people. Plus, it plays well solo.

(That's a joke, folks...OBVIOUSLY I can't vote against myself, since I'd always know when I was using the captain's hat, tiebreakers would be stupid, I'd always have to drown my own men, and I'd just get too caught up playing with the captain's log)

Wow... "Gourd, can't we talk about this?" [rim-shot]

That's tough. Despite the joy of physically manipulating the pieces I would probably discard most games that are available on-line.

That being said, and yes I know it *is* available on-line, I would probably hang on to Yinsh. It my favorite abstract at the moment.

Plus there is a chance that maybe our buddy Gourd will respect the fact that *all* of the Project GIPF games combine into one big meta-game. Whaddaya say Gourdy-boy?

Chess has been satisfying gamers for centuries, and for many, it is a lifetime pursuit and essentially the only game they play. In addition, if you ever felt the need for variety, there are a LOT of interesting variant games you can play with the same board and pieces, some of them quite different from standard chess.

In second place would be Go, for the same reasons. Go can satisfy for a lifetime, and if you ever did get tired of it, there are a lot of other interesting games you can play on a grid with stones of two colors.

If you see this box, and it's not in your collection, buy it immediately. My wife and I play this game 3-6 times a week, every week, and there is NO other game that comes close. Fitzgerald is a genius, and this is probably my most-played, all-time favorite.

Possible objections:
1. I don't like card games. Rebuttal: buy it. This one is different (well, it still has cards).
2. Card games aren't thematic enough. Rebuttal: buy it. MR:JTR OOZES 19th century London panic.
3. I don't like games about murder. Rebuttal: Buy it, or it'll steal up behind you in the night and...
4. I already have some rummy games. Rebuttal: Buy it, and let your other games bow down to it in a whimpering circle of subservience.
5. I already own the other games in the series. Rebuttal: Buy this one, it's the best, but get them all as payment to Mr. Fitzgerald for designing this one. And your first born should be named Mike. Boy or Girl.
6. Okay, okay, I submit! I'll buy it. Rebuttal: Buy it.

I get carried away. I know. That's why it's not called BoardGameSuave.

If there's only one, it must be one with lots of variety, where every game is a different game. It could have been Magic the gathering, but it's basically two players, so CE is my choice.

If I must have only one game for the rest of my life, I suppose I should pick one I've already been playing for 30 years or so--Acquire. The only game I've been playing longer would probably be Sports Illustrated Baseball, but I surely wouldn't pick a 2-player game as the only option for the rest of time.

Well, it would help teach me German, it takes a small life time to play it, I could use the money cards as actual cards (by scrawling numbers on them), could use the blocks for games I've made myself, and I'd still be able to gaze at it on my shelf.

Only problem would be getting the people to play it....Perhaps not such a good idea afterall...

My reasoning behind this is simple. It's short enough to play during a lunch break or jsut after work before heading home. Buddy and I played this at least three times a week after work and we would sometimes get a game in during lunch. Plus, it scales reasonably well and is easy to teach.

After I ate the zucchini (cooking tip of the day: slice and encase in foil with mushrooms, garlic, green peppers, squash, potatoes and onions all coated with a non-stick spray butter. Place foil on grill at medium heat for 20 minutes a side. Eat with any of your favorite grilled meats....mmmmm, mmmm.) it would be a no-brainer to take WOTR. It's the game I have the most time and money put into. The pic doesn't show it but I cannabilized two HOTW games to get the pieces for towns/cities/forts/strongholds. 3-D Catan at $300? Toss it in the garbage even though it would be more fun to play I didn't paint any of the bits.
I take it this list only includes boardgames because if it included miniatures I would have to keep DBA because of the 50+ armies I painted.
