You know those games, the ones you never seem to be able to beat your significant other at. You play nice and encourage their play, but after each win it hurts you more and more. Finally you scour the internet looking for strategies and/or tactics to get the edge. You will win that next game no matter what the cost. And the cost sometimes is never having a gaming partner again.
This can include games with any type of partner whether boyfriend/girlfriend or Wife/Husband.

This was my first real major purchase into Boardgaming. The first time I opened it up was to play a two player match against my wife, She won handidly. Needless to say she loved the game and we played the next night, again she won by significant margin. We played two nights later this time i was leading most of the game but I completed smaller tickets, while she completed a long and medium to pull away a close victory. 0 for 3, I am growing from encouraging partner to simmering mad. The game is on hold for a few days and then we play again and she wins a close one. 0 for 4, I then scour the internet for strategies and tactics along with advice from a friend who played the game countless times. I finally go with the card horde tactic which is to grab any color card that she seems to want even if I don't need it, Also look for any pattern in her path that reminds me of a ticket and where she is heading. I cut her off at portland for her LA to Portland ticket. Meanwhile my hand is full of cards since i'm hoarding them. In the end I win easily by a large margin, but do I hear a congratulations or a "good for you", NO. She quietly goes to bed and the Ticket to Ride remains on the shelf for a few months, until Her anger settles down. Luckily we still play, but I know better then to win by cutthroat tactics, and we both enjoy winning.

One of my first purchases for games to play with the wife and friends. She loves the game, but has the irritating habit of while explaining options to people (who are learning the game) during play always manages to point out the options to attack me and benefit her position... Should I possibly point out alternatives - usually ones which would be in the best interest of the player concerned in terms of position and scoring, without biasing it in terms of who would be attacked - I am harangued continually....

I honestly don't know how she manages it. We pull the tiles from a bag (not the official one, but one that is large enough to actually hold all the tiles) yet she still manages to always get the tile I need to complete my road, city or expand my farm.

While relatively new to the scene, she is incredibly competitive when it comes to gaming and always keeps me on my toes. She's the type who will always win the first time she plays a new game, with the one exception of Puerto Rico.. she lost to me by a mere six victory points.

Carcassonne is, however, her game of choice. We use cutthroat tactics on each other simply to stay in the game. When we have other people over to play, they usually win because my wife and I are so harsh on each other that we don't notice our friends getting an advantage.

Popular tactics in our game include using Die Katharer tiles to attack each other's cities, "helping" the other build a city by placing a cathedral in it towards the end of the game (or inn on a road) and surrounding incomplete city tiles in such a manner that we know the other could not complete it with the known tile collection.

We are lucky in that we don't take this competitiveness past the game. We know it's just a game and it never results in sleeping on the couch or any sort of withdrawl. If anything, it brings us closer together and gives us something about ourselves to laugh about. Wouldn't have it any other way.
