Whilst perusing the nominees for the Kennerspiel des Jahres, I was curious as to exactly how heavy these "gamers' games" were, especially as the only one I was familiar with had always struck me as a medium-light game. So I checked out the BGG entry for each one, looking at their weights to see what I could see. (I was right about that one, by the way.)

[Side note: For those not in the know, one of things you can do in addition to rating a particular game is to assign it a "weight". The BGG wiki tells us that "'weight' is an ambiguous overloaded term that is never actually defined." It is a 5-point scale, with 1 being Light, 2 being Medium Light, 3 being Medium, 4 being Medium Heavy, and 5 being Heavy.]

At that point, I asked myself the following question: Wouldn't it be nice if there were some way to easily group all of the games of a given weight together? Then, I gave myself the following answer: Yes. Yes, it would.

I looked for a GeekList which had already done this and found nothing. (Could have missed it, of course; it's very easy to miss similar-themed lists. I certainly hope I didn't miss it, though.)

I tried searching and sorting by game weight, and while this is possible, it isn't at all easy.

Therefore, I decided to do it myself. (Note: The games start in entry 10 so that all you have to do to find games of a particular weight is to multiply that weight by 10. For example, games of weight 3.2 are at entry 32. See? Easy.)

This list contains all of the top 1000 games, with a minimum of the top 20 games at each weight (even if not all 20 were in the top 1000 -- and assuming there were actually 20 games at a particular weight).

One thing remarkable about the above entry is that a game with so few weights (and, therefore, likely very few ratings) manages to get into the top 1000 at all. But it also highlights (even to my mind, which is not trained in statistical analysis) that even one weight for the less popular games can sway things dramatically.

For example, the game in the top 1000 with the fewest weights assigned is Neuroshima Hex! Duel, with 23. The distribution of these weights is as follows:

0 Light (1)
10 Medium Light (2)
12 Medium (3)
1 Medium Heavy (4)
0 Heavy (5)

The average weight, then is 2.609, which BGG rounds to the nearest tenth in its Statistics section, so 2.6.

But if a 25th person places a weight on the game of 1 -- possibly because that person is a longtime wargamer who thinks this is really a light game -- the average weight drops all the way down to 2.440, which would round down to 2.4.

So even if you take the weights as genuine and based on non-arbitrary distinctions and opinions, the difference between the average weights of two games can vary with just a little bit of instability in the voting. Fortunately, the majority of the games in the top 1000 do not have such a small sample size.

The previous entry left aside the possibility that weighting a game is a highly relative endeavor. But, of course, it is.

Somebody who spends a lot of time playing party games is likely to think that a game like Fresco or Race for the Galaxy is really heavy and may weight it accordingly, whereas a wargamer is likely to think nothing of the sort and may weight it as light.

In addition, different types of games may strike people in different ways. I've played Space Empires: 4X and -- while I certainly enjoyed it -- I don't consider it a medium weight game. And yet there it is with a 3.1 average weight. Meanwhile, I consider a lot of abstract strategy games to be relatively light, yet YINSH averages out to a 2.8 weight.

To me, a light game is one that is easy to learn and easy to play. If it affords some depth of strategy (like an abstract), I might weight it a 2. Meanwhile, I (along with a bunch of others) weighted Twilight Imperium: Third Edition at 5; even more gave it a 4. But a couple dozen weighted it at 1 and 2.

I'd like to ask those who think Twilight Imperium is a light game: "What makes you say that?" But perhaps those that think YINSH is heavy want to ask me the same thing.

All in all, I personally believe this tends to balance out, especially if there's a large enough sample size.

But I'd still like to talk to the guy that thinks Pit is a 5.

Here are some things I learned while going through this process. I don't claim that any of these are necessarily particularly insightful; I just thought I'd share.

- The heaviest games are almost uniformly war games. Sure, this is pretty obvious, but I thought I'd see at least some Euros in there. Nope.

- There's a serious spike around 2.5 and on either side. This tells me that games on the lighter side of medium tend to be those around which more people congregate or, alternately, they tend to be those that are most highly thought of. Obviously this isn't a hard and fast rule, but it seems to be easier for a medium (or slightly lighter) game to make inroads into the gaming world's consciousness.

- Recent games are underrepresented in the light weights. That having been said, don't make your game too light. Many of the highly-rated games in the 1-2 range are older titles. I don't know whether this is because there are fewer good light games being released (unlikely) or whether gamers frequenting this site are willing to give a pass to lighter games from their youth (more likely) or whether it's something else entirely.

- The games ranked between 500 and 1000 tend to have vastly fewer voters than in the top 100 or 200. This is obviously something that can also be learned simply from looking at the number of ratings that a game has, but I think it's interesting. In the past, I have fallen into the same trap that many others have in thinking that if a game is outside of the top 100 it must not be as good. I think this belief is categorically untrue. As has been noted in GeekLists before, if the actual rating of games is used, you end up with a very different top 100 list. Which is to say that many of those games around 600 or 700 are every bit as good as the games in the top 10, but without the wide distribution or mindshare that the big games have. I am looking forward to exploring this region more thoroughly.

HELP!

Finally, before I move on to the meat of the list, I wanted to put out a request for help.

I compiled this list manually. It took awhile. I'd like to update it on a semi-regular basis, but to do so manually would be a prohibitively lengthy process.

However, I'm fully aware that there are database-scraping experts out there that could pull everything I'm looking for in a much shorter span of time. If any one of you is seeing this right now and would know how to go about getting the following information, please geekmail me and let me know (providing the program to search this out and some instructions on using it, if that's not too much trouble).

Here is the information that I would like. I'd like to be able to stick it in a spreadsheet, so CSV would probably work.

- game name
- rank
- rating (average rating, not geek rating)
- weight (to tenths, ideally, but I can fix it later if the information comes back differently)
- number of weights

- Make sure that expansions are not included.
- Make sure that there are at least 30 user ratings (not weights). I believe this ensures that the game is ranked in the database; I'm not messing with unranked games.

One other request: When you click on the average game weight in the Statistics on a game, a Weight Graph pops up. Does anybody know how to include that in an actual post or item in a GeekList? It would be cool if that were possible.

Enough rambling. Onward!
