My wife and I are both gamers, as is Daughter the Elder, thus this list will possibly show a wide tastes in games.

There are some definites and then some maybes and some are out of print and the list is based on games we have played through to games we think we would enjoy based on reviews and articles here at BoardGameGeek.

Two player games are good, but we have plenty of gaming friends to fill out numbers when required. Finding the time for the 5+ hour games is a bit of issue these days due to children, but up to 4 hours is quite manageable.

We have recently had success in having people over with their copies of games that are either on our wishlist or potential wishlist additions (thank-you Duncan, thank-you Stefanie). Actually to qualify, this has been a gaming success but has had a bit of an impact on the bank balance!

Highly recommended as a method of try-before-you-buy though.

You could also look at our list of Games that are waiting to get off the shelves
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...

The comments on this list have gone weird, comments added to one game are now appearing against another etc. I will clean up the comments rekeying the valid ones and deleting ones for games now removed.

Further comments (which will hopefully behave themselves) are welcome.

For historical purposes here are the games that have been removed from the list in chronological order:
Pre Jun 2004 1830, Civilization
03-Jun-2004 Euphrat & Tigris, El Grande and Amun-Re
08-Jun-2004 Ticket to Ride
21-Aug-2004 Birthday presents and slowboat from England. Removed Attika, St Petersburg, Power Grid and Die Macher.
02-Jan-2005 Removed Ra and Finstere Flure, both from Germany one via Ebay the other via fellow BGGer Gary James
17-Mar-2005 Removed Hansa, added many.
25-Jul-2005 Updated a few entries
16-Oct-2006 Removed Traders of Genoa, Goa, Merchants of Venus, Fifth Avenue and Alhambra
Acquired in BIG text for future "removals"
[25-Feb-2007] Cleaned up the list after the new GeekList system. Discovered a couple of orphaned entries from previous deletions which I have re-deleted. Added a bunch of high priority games from my Wishlist.

Advanced Civilization - OOP. May be able to pick up a second hand one somewhere.

03-Dec-2003 This is dropping down my wishlist, I think my goal is Civ and Western Expansion.

[reapplied comments] talking mainly about combining Gibson's Civilization with Advanced Civilization
Nate Sandall (Cavedog_pdx) 13-Oct-2003 12:30:15
It's possible to make it work, but different backs on the cards will lead to a few issues. However, it's really no different than mixing the new Advanced Civilization trade cards with cards from a used Avalon Hill Civilization trade card deck as they all yellowed pretty easily with use. We had this problem the first couple plays until all the cards yellowed from being handled.

I recommend playing a couple games of the Gibsons to see how much you like it, then if you're going to get Advanced Civilization, get an original Avalon Hill Civilization as well. You'll be much happier for doing so. Also, Advanced Civilization I wouldn't recommend for less than 5 players - just stick with the original game that way.

Fraser McHarg (karlsen) 25-Oct-2003 18:37:29
I know that I like Civilization (vanilla AH variety) because I have chalked up a fair few 7 player games over the years, so that's not an issue. Interestingly the more I read around BoardGameGeek the slightly lessa appealing Advanced Civ seems, not that I would knock back a reasonably priced copy mind you (if one existed!).

I actually ended up getting this off a Melbourne local via eBay.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Game - Comes recommended in the comments to this list, but not available in Australia. I take it the ones available on Ebay from the UK are to be avoided like the plague and only go for the Hasbro one. This looks like wishlist material for now.

Aleister Finchley (Perduarab00) 19-Oct-2003 09:16:40
Yeah, the UK version is a completely different game - it's bollocks. The US version, however, is the dog's bollocks.

Morgan Dontanville (sisteray) 20-Oct-2003 00:15:58
I kind of feel that there was a huge sacrifice of game for theme. It perfectly captures the fell of the show, but then again it also perfectly captures the passive nature of wathcing TV and letting the game spell itself out. I was expecting to go face to face and duke it out to the end rather than, "Oh, look I got the 'I get to kill your main character and win the game" card."

Update 30-Jan-2007, I am not willing to pay over AUS$70 for this, so we still don't have it.

Civilization Western Expansion Map - Since it is mentioned above, why shouldn't it have its own entry. Have played with this in the past, would like it.

Just get a copy from someone who has an original - it's just a piece of paper and not worth paying the $50 - $150 bids I've seen this go for on ebay. I paid $8.00 for this in 1990! Unfortunately, mine is now well used and not the best one to make copies of.

Also, don't go nuts and get the Alea magazine issue #21 for too much money either. The map is incomplete and needs a lot of tweaking. I'm looking forward to seeing John Rodriguez' finished civ project map - the link is on the Civilization entry. It uses elements from the Alea #21 issue.

Vince Kill (Dohboy) 07-Nov-2003 04:21:37
You might also want to look at http://67.66.187.69/acep/. This is the url of the Civilisation expansion project. Here you can print off your own copy of an expanded board - it also has cards etc which you can print - should save you quite a lot on postage but cost a lot of ink!

Cosmic Encounter - Eon Expansion #9

Since we have the Eon set and Expansions 1-8 this one is a bit of a holy grail, however since the white slave trade is down and we are not willing to sell the house for it, it would seem unlikely that we will get it any time in the near future soblue

My GeekBuddy analysis and research tell me that I would like this. Finding a copy is difficult though. It is regularly fetching 45 Euro or way more on German eBay. When postage is included there is a maximum price that I am willing to pay, at it keeps crossing that price.

Yes, it is a dice rolling game. Yes, the theme is only marginally better than Igloo Pop. However, it is a fun filler and has great components. Stupidly expensive in Australia, but one day a copy will be ours.
