Those of us majoring in a social science of some sort have to figure out some way to use the knowledge we gain. It's either this or get a job waiting tables.

Ascribed Status: A social position that a person is born into.

I think this picture says it all. Caylus managed to become one of the most highly anticipated games that I can think of and was hot before many people ever had a chance to play it. I think Caylus’ #2 rank is largely a result of the “new game” phenomenon but since its release it didn’t take long for it to be sold out at many venues and demand was high enough to warrant restocking. There must be something to the game.

Achieved Status: A social position that a person chooses or achieves on his or her own.

Hammer of the Scots isn’t what I’d call a sexy game in high demand but it has managed to come in at a respectable 24 on the BGG because it's a great game.

Conflict Theory: A perspective on social stratification that focuses on inequality as a source of conflict and change.

War gaming has been on the decline for several years while Euro gaming has been in ascension. Sometimes this causes conflict when people from either camp state their dislike for the games others play. Games like Memoir '44 are a blend of the two styles of game play though you'll certainly find many who don't consider it a war game and others who consider it a war game and not a Euro.

Social Differentiation: The relative access individuals and groups have to basic material resources, wealth, power, and prestige.

There are those of us who have hundreds of games and those of us who have considerably less because of a lack of funds, space, or other considerations. Then there’s the idea of “Geek Cred.” If I recommend a game it has very little influence but when Tom Vasel speaks people listen.

Feminist Anthropology: A theoretical perspective that focuses on describing and explaining the social roles of women.

How many threads and geek list have we had about getting wives/girlfriends to play games? A certain infamous game makes a regular appearance on geek list and I can even remember another list extolling the virtues of beautiful women in gaming. I wonder what someone following the Feminist perspective would think of the role of women in our geeky little society.

I think Derk, Tom, and D.W. Tripp might fight the bill.

Melting Pot Model: A model of U.S. ethnicity that holds that as people lose some of their cultural differences, they form a new American culture.

Some of us are Euro gamers others are war gamers but there are many of us who have come to enjoy a wider variety of games after being exposed to them. I'm not a war gamer nor am I a Euro gamer I'm simply a gamer.

Mosaic Model: A model of U.S. ethnicity that holds that people retain ethnic differences and the United States should be composed of many different cultures.

Then again there are those among us who like one type of game and only one type of game and don’t mix well with others. Hex & chit are the only way to go, abstract themes don't make for good games, etc. I suppose we can all focus our hatred on collectible games though.

Code Switching: The ability of individuals who speak multiple languages to move seamlessly between them.

Jargon found among groups qualifies as code. Your fellow gamer players will not look at you funny if you ask for help finding a "red meeple" you dropped nor will they call the police if you ask them whether or not they have wood for sheep.

Economic System: The norms governing production, distribution, and consuption of goods and services withi na society.

We have threads in the forums discussion the proper amount of time to it should take to mail a trade in, how well it should be packed, and all sorts of speculation about how much games cost and how manufacturers should produce them. The big controversy recently seems to be about mapboards versus card stock. Very interesting stuff.

Monopoly Dresden? I suppose this game could make a WWII list as well.

Deep Play: Cultural performances, such as sports and games, in which participants and spectators are joined together in emotionally compelling experiences.

These games mean things to us beyond playing them. Almost every American knows what "Go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200" means. Werewolf isn't what I'd call a deep and meaningful game but it has a lot of exciting tension for participants and former participants turned spectator by the angry mob.

Diffusion: The spread of cltural elements from one culture to another through cultural contact.

Just the name Euro game provides us with some clues that perhaps a little cultural contact is taking place. Typically characterized by relatively simple rules and the ability to play them with the whole family is less than an hour. Chess started out in India (so far as I know) and has since spread to all corners of the globe.
