I think every group or gaming family has a couple of card games they love to play and request often. Often these games are played as filler, sometimes they just want to play a couple of hands of these games instead.

I was inspired by my 11 year old son who just learned and played a game of Alhambra, then he asked to play a game of Bang! or Loot. Of course it was too late, but it got me to thinking. I wonder what are some other peoples family/group faves.

This is the game most often requested by my family, and my extended family. If people come over, we often introduce this game to people who are not particularly gamers. We give the game as gifts, and love to play with a full table.

This is another favorite of my family's. My daughter carries it with her. We can always squeeze a game in or two. We have Zombie Fluxx (unplayed) and Monty Python Fluxx (played) as well.

We have been playing this one off and on since before we were married (20 years ago). My mother taught me to play, and I basically ended up taking her cards. My son calls this the Car Race Game.

In my wife's family, if you did not learn to play cribbage, you were looked at as a sort of second rate human being. They would have looks of pity on their faces while they listened to you, while talking slowly, like you were a drooling moron. You had to learn this game to sit at the big people's table during holidays. Surprisingly, my wife, daughter, and I still love to play it.

Way back when my wife was a girl friend, and we belonged to a group of gamers in college, I carried this game with me in the event a larger game went quickly. We thought the game was lost in a basement flood years ago. Fishing through boxes I have not opened since my move four years ago, buried among my beer making supplies was this game. I cannot wait to relearn it and play it again.

Quickly becoming one of the most played games in my family's collection of games. My son will turn off whatever electronic device he is staring at to play this one. We can play a couple of hands, and no one really seems to mind losing a hand in this game.

This game does get requested, usually by members of my extended family. However, after a game of it, we do not hear about it for a little while since most of the people in my family really do not go for the jugular in games.

I always want to play this game. I love the spin on history, and the multiple ways to win. And I enjoy the "board" made of cards. People always think it's so complicated, but after one play, they almost always want to play again.

This game is the perfect example of how to take a board game and make it into a card game. It's easy to teach, it's extremely fast and it's a game that I've never played just once, I always play at least two or three times per sitting.
Way more fun than I've ever had playing Monopoly. Fast, fun, easy to learn and play.

I do have to say that my gaming group only played this one time, but it was so much fun that we still talk about it to this day.

This is a little bit of cheating, as this could be argued to be a Party game less than it is a Card game, but there isn't a board, so that counts at least.

Each round one player is the TA and presents everyone with their own Unstable Element and an Assignment for the group. For instance, you might get "Slingshot" for Unstable Element and "Time Travel" for Assignment. I believe that the plan there was to build a Slingshot so large that the object or subject in the slingshot would travel faster than the speed of light and travel back in time, like at the end of the first Superman movie.

I don't remember all the details of the Assignment that had "Squirrels" as the Unstable Element, but I remember that my friend Johnny used the phrase "Human Centipede of Squirrels". It might have been Perpetual Motion. Whatever it was, none of us could come up with anything better than that for the rest of the night.

In short: Great card game with the right crowd, really funny/dumb/amazing.

This game is played a lot in Germany, and within about 100 miles of Milwaukee Wisconsin. Just about everywhere else, nobody has heard of it.

It's a trick taking game, and has a couple of factors that make it very social. Partners change each hand, but who is on each side is a little secretive until the cards are played. While you can win hands alone, you usually need help from your partner(s). Also the game has a zero-sum scoring system, and scores usually stay pretty close. Lastly, there is a little bit of betting, where players can double the stakes, and the opponents have a chance to double the stakes again.

All of this adds up into a lively, but friendly game. People have to figure out who is on which side, and have to takes small risks by adding points to other's hands or what strength of a trump card to play. Factions don't develop because partners change each turn, and so you have to learn to read other people's plays as both partners or opponents.

It's not that hard to learn, but might be a little difficult for a group to learn without at least one veteran player. I think this, and the fact that it's played with a standard deck, prevent it from spreading. But if someone took the rules, and slapped on some popular zombie/comic book/sci-fi theme, you could get it into the top 100. It's a ton of fun.
