I don't mind paying a good amount for a boardgame. If it is good, it will more than pay for itself in hours of enjoyment. What I don't like is when a good game is made worse by an issue that just takes a little common sense.

I will talk about my issues, feel free to include your own.

For some games it is optional whether you sleeve the cards or not. For a game like Citadels, where a small number of card are passed around, shuffled, played on a surface many times, it's a must. Unfortunately, if you sleeve the cards you have to get rid of the stupid cardboard insert to put them back in the box. Another design of a cardboard insert I got from an old Milton Bradley game hold the gards perfectly and has a little space for the gold coins.

This is one of the best games on the market. You can tell that a lot went into it's production. The plastic insert does an excellent job stacking everything when you put it away. But taking the victory chits out of the tray is like trying to split the atom with a tootbrush.

I use this game as an example of how to do something right.

There are a couple of charts you need to look at to play Speed Circuit. These charts are not just in the directions, they are placed on the racetrack for easy reference.

How many well produced games to they come out with now in which you have to fumble through the rule book to find some chart. Why not have it right on the board?

Space Hulk: Death Angel is a fun little game. I bet several people who bought the game haven't played it because they can't make heads nor tails of the rulebook. It took several trips to the internet before I figured this one out. I is a game worth playing, but they should revise the rulebook and sent it out to everyone that bought this great game.

I don't care what anyone says, this game is a blast to play. Unfortunately they put a big plastic insert in it to hold the boards. This leaves no room for all the spaceships so you have to cram them under the insert. You have to shake the box so they aren't in the middle so you can put the cover on it.

Another one on the list with rulebook issues (this geeklist could get long on that one issue).

Great boards
Great cards.
Cube goodness....well, you could have made them nicer.

Rulebook...starts out great then about halfway through you need a magnifying glass to read the rest of the rules!

Oh my, don't get me started on what I thought when I first got this and Sentinels of the Multiverse: Rook City.

The original box barely contains all the original cards, let alone adding an expansion to it and when I decided to make tuck boxes for them all, forget about it. Not to mention the fact that there were no damage tokens or condition markers so you had to track that on your own.

Now in fairness, Greater than Games is going to sell the new improved box on their website for $10 with the dividers and markers, so I guess I'll be buying that so I can have everything together in one nice box. Just a shame that such a good game came in such crappy packaging.

This is a brilliant design by Uwe Rosenberg (Agricola, Le Havre) that is just-this-side-of-ruined by one glaringly awful publishing decision:

"We've got a game where buildings are represented by cards. The players can use each other's buildings, which means they need to be able to easily recognize from across the table which buildings are owned by their opponents. Shouldn't we at least use normal-sized cards for the buildings?"

"Nah, use those mini-cards that so many other Eurogames get away with. Opponents can just repeatedly ask each other 'what building is that again?'"

"Okay, but I insist that we include slippery, warped player boards that won't hold the building cards if someone down the street so much as opens their front door."

"Agreed! Ship it!"

This is a truly awesome game that I can never get people to play a second time because it's just too damned hard to read those tiny cards from across the table...

OMG, the frigging tray they give you for the soldier chits.

At first glance, it looks great - all of the pieces fit, it's removable from the rest of the box insert and has a nice cover that keeps everything in place.

And then, you try to actually take a chit out of the tray. And realize they're in there so tight you can't get them out using your finger.
So you look around for something else to use, and maybe grab the screwdriver from the junk drawer in the kitchen. And even THAT has trouble getting next to the chits to the point where it has enough leverage to actually get a chit off of the bottom of the tray, and eventually you just get ticked off and just dump the dang thing upside-down onto the table, figuring it's easier to just clean everything up later than to attempt to get a single token out at a time.

I don't know if they've finally gotten around to fixing it in newer editions, but I've got one of the older editions that's got a chip tray just like the one shown here.
When actually playing the game, it's great. It's really easy to get your finger in from the side and take a chip out.

However - there are dozens of different chips, and they don't stay in the tray unless it's lying perfectly flat. Tilt the box at an angle (in case, you know, you want to move it, or put it on a shelf, or whatever), and they all dump out into a huge mess.

I really dig this game, but the different horses are identified by numbered/colored stickers that are placed on them.
Left alone in the box for a few days or so, those stickers start peeling away.
It's a common enough problem that the publisher actually started putting another sheet of stickers in the box to use when the first ones get messed up.
Here's an idea - how about just putting in stickers that actually stick in the first place?

While I love this game and think that the pastel camels are wonderful, it bothers me that this game didn't come with baggies or an insert for them. If a game doesn't have a very good insert, at the very least it should come with bags for all of the components.

I know a lot of people like the insert, but it really doesn't work all that well if you store the game upright bookshelf-style. The box lid doesn't hold the game-board up against the insert securely enough to prevent the 100 pt. tokens, building ownership tokens, and cards from floating around the box. shake
