This is a list of semi-cooperative games in which the players play to win individually, but which they can lose together.

So, the players work to reach their individual goals, but their combined efforts should be sufficient to stave off some disaster which will cause them all to lose. I've also included some games in which the players can 'fail' thematically, but do not lose - instead, there is merely a different way of detemining the winner.

I don't know many of such games - feel free to add them if you can think of others.

For clarity: I'm not looking for cooperative games in which all players (with the exception of some traitors) work together and win together.

Each player works to make his faction the most powerful faction in Rome, but together they have protect Rome from various threats. If they fail to do so, Rome goes down, and all the players lose.

This has long been the only game I knew of with such a rule. A pretty tough one too - we usually had problems surviving the "early republic".

Each player is a hero, and tries to collect six sacred gems to defeat the Evil Spirit. If a player succeeds in doing so, he wins the game. While the heroes run their errants, however, Darkness spreads slowly to the lands. The heroes can prevent this spread by succesfully completing quests. If they fail to keep the Darkness at bay, and the entire land succumbs, all players lose.

Each player is working for himself, increasing his income by recruiting workers, and recruiting priests to make sacrifices to the gods, which will give him points. Together, the players must recruit all priests, to obtain the help of the sun god Tayta Inti. If they succeed, Machu Picchu will remain hidden from the Spaniards. If they fail, Machu Picchu is conquered by the Spanish, and the players with the most gold will get a big increase in score.

In this game, the "failure" is merely thematic, as there is still a winner. So, there is no real "working together" - a player may aim to pursue a "traitor" strategy. In my games, though, Machu Picchu has never been conquered.

Each player is a Renaissance European power, competing with the others in the exploration of a Carribean archipelago, attempting to complete their secret objective. At the end of the game, the player with the best achievements win the game.

However, the players should work together to keep the population happy, otherwise the people may rebel, and declare independence. If that happens, all players lose.

In this game, there is the possibility of a traitor: one player may have the Seperatist goal, in which case he wins when indepence is declared.

Another game in which the players only 'fail' thematically, and in which some players may pursue a strategy that is not aimed at reaching the common goal.

In this game the players work together to get through a series of monster attacks. The play who deals the "killing blow" to a monster is the only person to score points. It's possible for players to die off before the game's end and therefore weaken the party. This may in fact make the situation such that the group as a whole may not be able to finish the campaign. The player with the highest score at the end is still determined to be the winner.

Thematically speaking everyone dies in this game...because that's the end of the game. It takes place during Ragnarok and the one with the most points scores a higher place in Valhalla. Not sure this one really fits the list so much as everyone dying is simply what happens at the end of ever game.

As contracts don't get fulfilled, they get discarded. If the players don't fulfill at least as much as is discarded then everyone loses. Otherwise the one that made the most money wins.

The first couple games of this, even honest mistakes got blamed for 'sabotages' and I think they ended in loses for everyone.

Because you are drawing blindfolded and those helping you are under stress, mistakes happen. But, some people can't tolerate that because they think it must have been on purpose and get pissed. It ended up not getting pulled out for a long time. But, the last couple times we played it we just played it to see if we can fulfill contracts and played it purely cooperative. That way it was fun.

I've only played this one once, but as I remember:

- you can play to get the most points for yourself by building structures
- however, you roll the dice every turn to see how much money you have to build structures
- every dice roll includes the possibility to introduce "corruption", which causes more of Mordred's men to be introduced on the board
- if Mordred's men reach a certain location on the board, everyone loses
