This past weekend I had a rare Saturday off. It's been so long since that's happened, I was unsure what to do. But the weather forcast looked great, so I decided to get on my motorcycle and enjoy myself, which I did for about an hour. So here's the story of my close call, in Geeklist form for your enjoyment.

As I said, I was unsure what to do, then I remembered my wife had picked up a flyer for a local benifit poker run. For those of you not familiar, that's a leisurely bike trip with five stops, and at each stop you draw a card. The person at the end with the best poker hand wins some kind of prize. The proceeds for entry go to support a local charity, in this case the local Veterans Home.

So I showed up, signed in and drew my first card, an 8 of spades. I then made a remark that if my next card was an ace, I'd quit early. In the meantime, I met a lot of nice people, including the couple that I decided I'd group up with.

And so I hopped on my bike, a 2008 Victory Kingpin, and began what I hoped would be a nice leisurely day of riding and companionship. The barbecue at the end would be a nice plus.

So there I was, the third bike in a small group of three. We were about a mile from town on a nice road. Ironically I'd just passed a sign that said "Watch for Large Birds." Up ahead in a farm field I caught a glimpse of deer running. There was a tree line there along the road, and they had stopped there apparently as several cars and the other two bikes went by with no problem. I maintained speed, watching ahead as I passed by.

What happened next seemed like it was happening in slow motion. It is amazing what can go through one's mind in a time like this...

Before I could react, a deer appeared suddenly directly in front of me, at about eye level. It had apparently decided to let all the other traffic pass and cross in the small gap between me and the bike in front of me.

I remember seeing it, then there was a very loud noise as it collided with the front of my bike at the headlight/windshield level. I'm not sure, but I may have said a very bad word out loud.

The next moment probably only lasted a few seconds, but seemed like an eternity. Immediately after impact, The front end of my bke began wobbling, what a fellow biker called the 'death wobble.'

My first thought was that I wasn't dead, but might be soon. I did not want to get thrown on the pavement, so as best I could, I held onto the handlebars and tried to steady the wobble. My right hand was hurting and the front brake wasn't working at all. I pulled in the clutch and began riding the rear brake to try and slow down.

The road I was on had no shoulder, and I didn't want to go sliding across the pavement. Even though I was slowing down, the wobble was still just as bad, making me think now that the front fork may have been knocked out of alignment.

Ahead I noticed a lot of thick wet grass growing along the road side. I thought if I could guide the bike that way, I could at best coast to a stop in the grass. My other thought was that wet grass would be gentler on the bike and me if we fell over.

I veered off the road into the grass. Unfortunately the grass was wetter than I thought and the bike skidded around in a 180 and fell over. Fortunately I had slowed down enough that I wasn't thrown from the bike. I can't remember exactly, but I'm guessing I rode it down. As when we came to a rest, my leg was still under the side of the bike.

My next thought was that I was alive. I got up and looked around, a bit dazed. My bike was on its side in the grass, and I had what appeared to be parts of a deer on my jacket. I'd been wearing a jacket, chaps and good riding gloves, and they had served their purpose well.

Soon, the two bikers I was with came back to check on me and helped me get my bike upright. I took off my helment, gloves and jacket, and called 911 to report the accident, then called my wife to tell her I was okay. One look at the bike told me I wouldn't be able to ride it anywhere soon...

I was a little sore and shaken up, and my right hand hurt. When I removed my glove, I found that something had hit the back of my hand hard enough to break the skin, but hadn't damaged the leather riding glove at all.

Inspection of the bike at this point, and later once it had been hauled away showed that the headlight had been shattered, the windshield, while not broken, had its frame collapsed. The front brake cable was broke, the handlebars were bent backwards, the mirrors were both bent over, the speedometer and warning light cluster were both crushed and not working, and there was a dent and deer droppings on the left side of the gas tank. Otherwise, the bike looked okay at the time. I guess it was a good idea to steer toward the wet grass.

The deer was dead, apparently on impact, as there was no blood to speak of. Other people that had stopped to check on me had dragged it off the road into the ditch. It was a healthy looking whitetail doe, probably about 80 pounds or so.

I filled out a report with the State Patrol, and waited for the wrecker to take the bike to the nearest shop. During this time, my hand kept getting more and more painful, so my wife and I decided it wouldn't be a bad idea to have it checked out.

(at left is a photo of some of the damage)

So, spent the next couple hours at the local hospital emergency room. I showed them my hand, which by this time was turning dark. I also was having a little trouble walking, so they decide to x-ray the hand and my pelvic area. The doctor said there was nothing broken, but was some deep tissue bruising in my hand. They said regular ibuprofen would be fine for the pain, and gave me a brace to wear, mainly to keep from hitting my hand on anything.

It's funny how you take for granted how much you use your right hand for. Because of pain and lack of strength, I had to have my wife help me get dressed.

So now I'm back home, and my hand has healed enough that I can type out this geeklist. I must admit I feel like one of the luckiest people alive right now. My bike will need some extensive repairs most likely, and my hand and joints will be sore for a few days, but I went through a high speed crash with a large animal on a motorcycle, and I'm able to tell you about it with nothing but a few bruises.

I also want to add that I think the bike itself save me. If I had been on a smaller bike, or a sport bike, I would probably have been knocked to the pavement. But the big Victory plowed right through.

Also to add as I was going through my things, found a skid mark on the top of my helmet, so am guessing that I ducked and was hit there also by the deer or the windshield.

Thanks for reading.
