Grimwold has has given us one of the most anticipated monthly lists on the Geek in his "New to You" Geeklist. I have read that Geeklist for a while now and recently I have started contributing to that list.

Contributing to that list has changed how I game a little bit. Now I seek out new games to play, instead of relying on the old standbys. I find that thinking about the Geeklist forces me to rate all new games I try and it even causes me to fill in my comments on each of those games, so I can use those comments on the Geeklist.

There is just one little thing that always bothered me a little bit, this one thing that I keep going over in my head almost every month. As I write up my contribution to the Geeklist, I find myself wanting to talk about a game that is NOT new to me. I yearn to let other geeks know about an old favorite we dusted off this month, or we are STILL playing that game that we thought would be stale by now, or a game you played this month in which you feel is underappreciated.

Here you can indulge us and tell us what game you had the most fun playing this month.

Thanks. -Rob

This a recurring list. If you would like notification, please subscribe to the anouncement thread: http://www.geekdo.com/article/4853029

Only 8 total plays in September. What a crappy month for Boardgaming. It seems every night of the week I have been busy with one thing or another and the free time for boardgaming has been pretty sparse.

...But I did get in a great game of Mage Knight. I was able to teach my son how to play and we had a great session. Mage Knight has really 'fixed' many of the issues that plague similar games. If you compare it to Runebound for example, it goes a long way to fixing the downtime issues. In Mage Knight, there is enough mental math and planning in another players turn that the downtime is productive. In Runebound, the downtime is unproductive, it is twiddle your thumbs and wait for your turn. In Runebound, you have good luck and bad, and in Mage Knight it is the same except here you draw your hand and then With that random draw for good or bad, you can make with it what you will. This ability to "play the hand you are dealt", is what makes the game great.

Played a nice game of Steam this month. Three of us on the New England map. It started out a little scary, I got to go last and my opponents snapped up the easy more immediately profitable connections. However the random placement of goods really wasn't set up well for those quicker to build connections. So after a few quick turns grabbing the easy items their options started to look tougher. I had to borrow a little more for longer routes at the start but ended up with a longer lasting set of options for delivery. We were all fairly new to the game so this was definitely a learning curve play. Lesson learned; a long term set of income options is important to keep in mind.

Why is this the best gaming experience? It was the first game I purchased, taught my family, and then wrote a review for. I was worried about the random ending, and it only seems to bother my sneaky gamer daughter (very little). My wife and son like it, and it does not seem to impact them that they do not win. We are still learning the game, and I am sure they will get a little more competitive as they get more experience.

My wife was out of town. She took our new Seasons with her. So in her absence I brought over one of my game group's favorites, Age of Industry. The three of us played on the New England map. It was a really close exciting game. I lost with 40 points while the other two players (husband and wife) tied at 45 points. We thought he was the tie breaker until she noticed we did not adjust the turn order (based on $ spent) on that last turn, which determines tie breakers. Hence she won.

I can't remember all the details, but we played this with my parents and I recall my Mom playing much more aggressively than usual. She would hit us with the detective as much as possible and raced ahead of the pack and locked in at about 75 days. It looked bleak for the rest of us, in fact Rikki and my Dad were forced to just finish with their best possible scores of 78 and 80 days. I was last in that round and needed a miracle. I had a 3 train, but the best I could muster was a 7 ship and a 5 ship. I needed to make the trip in 7 days to tie or less to win, but it looked impossible.

I had some coins, so I bought a travel card hoping for another 5 ship so I could at least manage to lose by only 1 point. The ship I bought was indeed a 5. I still had 2 coins, why not see what an event card would bring? Amazingly I drew the Princess which allowed me to use the top card on the event discard pile. Holy crap! That's the express train!! I was able to turn my 3 train into a 1 and ride a fast ship the whole way for only 5 days. That totaled 6 days and I won the game by 1 lousy day. It was the most improbable ending I could imagine. Mom was more than a little frustrated. Great game!

I was at FallCon so I guess I had some great gaming experiances. But some stand out just a little more.

1. Ticket to Ride: Team Asia

The team play in ticket to ride was an amazing experiance. I wish there were more solid team games like this.

2. Games that surprised me because I liked them so much more then I thought I would. I had a 6 player dixit game at FallCon and I loved it, Santa is bringing this to my family this year.

The other surprise was Gloom. I think I just really liked the mechanic of the game and how unique it is.

3. Any time I can teach a game to all new players and you get the sense that they enjoyed it is always a good experiance. As was the case with Empires of the Void.

I think the best experience I had this last month was teaching Lindy Dos Rios in a MacDonald's. We got a lot of looks, especially when we lost ourselves in the game play and got a bit of loud gaming banter going back and forth. She liked the game and we played it again later in the month.

I am not sure how appropriate is this entry as the game has not yet been released to the public and I am the designer, but it is a true story so I hope it fits.

We have been play testing this game in our inner circle and with various new players these last couple of months. But my best gaming experience is always when I prove to others that even in a somewhat randomly luck based games (like most of the games are) it's not just about luck but also preparations and the choices you make do matter! Yes, there were a couple of times when I got bested by first time players, but that does not happen as often and I tend to finish on top.

That is why I really enjoy to play with my friends who have helped in testing this game for a long while now - so they have also gotten pretty good at it. Our sessions are very intense and the ending is usually very close without anyone getting far ahead of the others. That is the kind of match I love the most. A close one! But, yeah, there were also times when someone got kicked out early - that is usually the person who is playing cocky and so everyone just jumps on that player it also teaches humility against others.

Overall I had a great play experience the whole month and I do think that I was not the only one.
