I will be holding an abstract games tournament as part of the Gaming Association of Southwestern PA’s annual GASP-Con on Saturday Nov 10th from 2-6 pm, at the Best Western Parkway Center Mall, 875 Greentree Rd, Pittsburgh, PA. [http://www.gaspgamer.com/gasp_con/gaspcon.html]. The tournament with be modeled after Clark D. Rodeffer's (CDRodeffer) abstract game tournaments at the U-Con Gaming Convention (Clark’s tournament is scheduled for October 27th).

As with Clark’s tournament we will play a variety of two-player abstract board games. We will stay away from the most popular classics (e.g., Checkers, Chess, Go, Oware, Othello, etc.) and focus on lesser-played abstracts (e.g., Chase, Emergo, Lines of Action, Strata 5, etc.) with the idea that winning should depend more upon creative tactics than prior study. Games should be learned and completed within an hour giving an opportunity to play a variety of abstract games.

I hope to duplicate what I consider to be the “Best Four Hours of Recreational Thinking” for abstract game fans and others curious thinking types.

arimaa would be perfect for an event like this. Deep, different, and all you need for components are cheap chess sets.

Oh, yes. AT fan. I'm tired of bidding for improvements for a crappy medieval town.

Epaminondas is a great game with simple rules. You can play with a checkers board (this version is called crossings), but if you can get a 14x12 board (28 pieces each) it's a blast.

Greetings.

Quick to teach. I've been playing it a lot lately and enjoying it. Conveniently playable with disks on a regular 8x8 board.

probably my favorite n-in-a-row game. Besides being fun and strategic, I appreciate the way the rules prevent any hint of first player advantage. Also, this is easily playable with common go equipment.
