Why we want to play 365 times in 365 days: one day we wanted to play Dice Town with our 11 year old son Irmin. He was totally absorbed by reading Lord of the Rings at that time, so he refused, but offered to play a lot as soon as he finished the last part of the trilogy. I said, I'd only accept this, if we would play 365 games in 365 days and to my astonishment Irmin agreed!

269 plays in 193 days
172 days left!

Ready, steady, go!
12.10.2012 (play 1) This was the first game we played. Erasmus bought it just yesterday and everyone immediately liked it. Irmin promptly wanted a rematch, but we played Tsuro instead.
13.10.2012 (play 3) Looks like this game is going to be a real hit! Irmin is craving to win this one... but until now he doesn't!
16.10.2012 (play 27) Irmin won this late evening game and couldn't celebrate the way he wanted to. Hopefully he'll soon win again at a more suitable time. The time he needed during each of his turns to calculate his options has noticeably decreased, even though he already was a little tired. He usually isn't very good with arithmetics so this is a nice side effect.
11.11.2012 - play no. 42
We needed a quite short game because lunch wasn't ready. But today it took us more time to play. Although gameplay seemed to be a little chewy, but still a good game.

13.01.2013 - play no. 107
Not much to say here. Irmin won.

25.02.2013 - play no. 121
Irmin won again. He's still a little slow adding the dice, but you can see that he things through his options.

12.10.2012 (play 2) Another game Erasmus bought yesterday. And again, Irmin instantly wanted to play a second time, but it already was bedtime. We promised to play again the next day and Irmin was satisfied. Tsuro had been on our wish list for quite some time. We borrowed it from the public library in Münster, which has a rather big board games section and found it was a tremendous family game.

13.10.2012 (play 4-9)Today we played a Tsuro competition, which Erasmus won. We had to bend the rules once to prevent Irmin from having to "commmit suicide" shortly after the beginning of one game. We allowed him to trade his three cards for new ones and miss his turn, so he could stay in the game.

19.10.2012 play no. 29
Today we played the larger side of the board. Irmin likes the dragon on this side a lot. He has drawn countless dragons over the years. The game was kind of altruistic, first Erasmus didn't kill me, afterwards I killed myself to keep him alive. I think Irmin really likes this game but he plays it way less tactically than we adults do. Erasmus actually thinks the game plays just as well if you don't play as competitive as we usually do and was very touched that I sacrificed myself for him. We plan to play this with a larger group of people as soon as possible and are eager to see the difference.

24.01.2013 - play no. 112
This time only Jutta and Irmin played. Jutta suggested it and played very aggressive but Irmin played very well and won.

13.10.2012 (play 10) A fierce struggle without mercy for nuggets, dollars, saloon mates and the sheriff's star! Erasmus ended up rolling lots of aces and winning by at least twenty points. Revenge awaits him. Irmin likes the "back and forth" aspect of the game and insists I tell you all, that he had more gold nuggets than everybody else.

11.11.2012 - play no. 44
Hahaa, skip the revenge part from above, I won again (by one point)! We had fun playing this game. Now Irmin is laying out all claim cards to make one big scenery.

04.01.2013 - play no 92
We got the expansion for christmas and now there is so much to do. A great game.

13.10.2012 (play 11) Irmin loves to trade, so we played a game of Bohnanza. Irmin was very altruistic with his cards, trading them away at low (or no!) prices. Afterwards he explained, that his being generous would make us play less competitive. The benefit was just five coins too small for victory. But, nonetheless, we all enjoyed the game.

13.10.2012 (play 12) Irmin and I played Castle Panic with the Wizard's Tower expansion. I was kinda shocked, that Irmin doesn't really know the rules well - he has played this game at least twenty times with one of his buddies from school. It seems they play by guess and by gosh. Do you English speaking people really say this ?! Sounds funny or at least antiquated. We lost terribly and my only comfort is that this defeat is partly due to rule blundering. I learned my lesson: if you play with children, you should always check the rules, even if the child insists that it knows the rules by heart. To Irmin's defence - the rules are in English and even though his English is already really good and his vocabulary very diverse, he possibly couldn't translate everything correctly. So, next time we will study the rules together and defend our castle!
18.10.2012 (play 28) Today we played Castle Panic accurately with all the rules. Erasmus, our rules specialist, screened every move we made and all went as it should. Only... we lost. The last wall of our castle was destroyed by a Flaming Boulder and only smouldering ruins are left of what was once our heavy walled stronghold. One day we'll kick those ogres and trolls back into their forest!

14.10.2012 (play 14-17) So we started our Family Board Games Sunday with a competition of Wazabi. Irmin likes games where you can go after each other, but he needed some time to understand that ganging up against someone doesn't always pay off and backstabbing your allies is more fun than anything else. Now he has gotten the knack of it and really likes it. Because of its competitive nature I think this game is really good to start a Board Games session, it most certainly boosts winning morale quite a bit.

14.10.2012 (play 18) Erasmus really likes racing games and had asked to play Snow Tails for months, so we decided to give this a try. Lucky enough, Erasmus won and Irmin made a good second place, while I crashed my sleigh into the first trees and had no chance to recover from this. In our opinion there is too much luck in the game, oftentimes if you are not lucky with your cards, you have no chance to make it through the course. Otherwise it's a fun game, so we'll probably try to find a house rule to make it a bit more playable even if you don't draw the perfect hand.

Irmin won and was on top of the world and hopped around like a lucky bunny, which was really nice to see. It's awesome when you can tell that your child loves your hobby, too.
Next time we play this game, we will reduce the amount of destiny/story points you need to win to speed up the game. It was rather long today and a little bit a pain in the neck for Erasmus who is almost always out of luck considering this game.

14.10.2012 (play 20) After dinner we all were already so tired that we could only play a very light game. Irmin had the idea to play a small game of Danger, so we did. We had a most successful weekend of board gaming fun, but now it's bedtime for all three of us. Perhaps we'll dream about board games...

06.01.2013 - play no. 98
The day started with Irmin making coasy, snuggely spots for everyone in the livingroom. The plan was to play lots of board games and have a really good time before school and work start tomorrow.
My first pick was Danger. A nice, litte push-your-luck game. Irmin closely watched the cards in front of the other players, something he didn't do during our first play. A good start for the day.

21.03.2013 - play no. 161
Today we made a game list. It goes like this. We look at our collection on BGG, someone suggests a game he/she is willing to play and if everyone agrees that game is put on the list. The result is a list of games that everybody is at least OK with. Now, everybody secretly picks two games he/she wants to play at the moment (two, because we are three players and want a result of six games). And then the die decides which game we play.
Jutta had terribly bad luck. Fun little light game.

Today we agreed and it was hilarious to see how he commented all the cards and laughed his head off. All the three of us had great fun, even though Erasmus says he's usually a little tired of Munchkin. Irmin won by surprise just before Erasmus would have.

In Irmin's words: I think it's a funny game but sometimes it can happen that you are unlucky with your cards or monsters and then it's not easy to play.
In Jutta's words: Well, for me the game was just a bit too long. Halfway through the game it just seemed to drag on forever. But I know Irmin really has a lot of fun with this right now so that totally makes up for a little boredom now and then.

15.10.2012 (play 22) We played our first round of Citadels with the family. Irmin had trouble understanding that it's essential to ruin other player's turns even though he usually likes games where you can be mean against someone. After the game he even said that we have an advantage over him because we are better at anticipating what someone wants to do on his turn. I really didn't foresee this, but earlier today Erasmus and I talked about using games with negotiation, deduction or haggling to practice social skills. Erasmus points out that if he would have gone for me from the beginning, Irmin probably would have made second or even first place. Indeed I think it's a good idea to train Irmin's social skills this way, because it's a fun way to do so and every kid can benefit from this.
17.10.2012 play no. 28
One of Irmin's picks for our last game today was Citadels, which was a bit too long, so we had to cut before anyone had eight buildings. Erasmus and I really have to work on our time management. Perhaps I should start recording how long we need for our games, oftentimes I have the impression that we need much longer than listed as playing time by BGG. Back to Citadels: Irmin said he was kind of challenged by Citadels. Even though the first game didn't run very good for him, he liked it and wanted to get better at it. Sadly enough, it was even worse today. Erasmus and I tried to focus on each other but it didn't work out at all. I totally crashed two or three of Irmin's turns and left him teary-eyed and downhearted. He tried to make a happy face and said he wasn't angry at me. I feel like a fool.

15.10.2012 (play 23) The last game for today was Identik. We all love to play this little gem and enjoy the hilarity of our pictures. One of the advantages of this game is that we're all on the same level, which isn't necessarily the case with other drawing games like Pictomania. As it already was late for Irmin (we finished at 21:45 o'clock) we had to take care that the atmosphere didn't get too tumultuous and excited. If you play late in the evening with children you always have to remind yourself that you'll have to put them to bed later on. I predict that today Irmin who is rather easy to excite will come out of his bed at least once. Erasmus isn't so sure... we'll see.
...
Hahaa, and I (Erasmus) was right. But I have to admit, that Irmin slept a little longer today so you can deduce that it was a little harder for him to fall asleep than usual.

Hey folks, Erasmus here. Today I didn't had to go to work so Irmin (who has still autumn vacations) and I had the time to play a little. We started with Raindropchess. Irmin has some problems to keep track of what's going on in every corner but is able to find clever solutions for single problems. I usually explain a lot of my moves to teach him some strategy. He gave me a hard time throughout the game. I think if I increase my handicap a little more he will start beating me.

Our second game was Formula Dé Mini. Irmin loves to play racing games on the playstation so I never understood why he wasn't excited to play racing-boardgames. I had to press a little for this one, but finally it was a great success. It was a very tight race. Irmin got the rules very quick and forced me to spend a lot of damage chips to keep up to him. Irmin won by an inch before his car collapsed.

We decided that the next board game we buy will be the real Formula D. Like Can't Stop this game meets all the requirements a perfect family game needs. It surely is one "lucky" game, your success depends on what the dice say, but we all have the feeling that it captures the racing spirit very well.

Erasmus tried hard this time, but lost really bad. Irmin especially likes to experiment on the various ways you can try to place the mikados. This game is kind of educational in a very positive way, I think teachers could use this one fairly well to train fine motor skills with younger children, but also some principles of physics with older ones.

Irmin had to go to bed before we were finished so he was spared the looong boring part. I'm not into the zombie theme like so many others but if I would play another zombie game it'll not be this one!

Actually - for me this is one of the games where the dexterity thing makes sense thematically. We all enjoy cooking and eating unusual meals, so the theme is appealing to the whole family. Also it's so fun that no one cares if something goes wrong.

Irmin has wanted to play Igels for some time. Today he was lucky. He likes the game because there are not too many really mean cards and the gambling aspect of the combat mechanic and the instant effect cards. I think the animal factions are a real plus to this game because a lot of thought went into their special abilities, names and so on. Erasmus thinks that the game is a little boring but he likes that there's at least some strategy involved because the animals take a break after fighting. I personally think the game is fun, if you play it with a reduced number of food cards. This time I put so few food cards in that you can merely call it a filler and that's just the way I like it.

Because Irmin likes the NichtLustig comics Erasmus borrowed this game from the public library in Münster. The game actually was better than we hoped it to be. Irmin likes the little lemming figures. He also liked that you have such an emotional back and forth in this game: 'yay, my lemming wins, oh no, it has fallen back!' and so on.
17.11.2012 - play no. 46
Today we played again, because we have to return the library games soon. And surprise, it was a little more enjoyable than last play; and surprise no. 2, Irmin remembered the rules better than we did.

Another of Erasmus' library finds. It says "easyplay" on the box and yup, I agree. It's a lot like can't stop, but it's not so entertaining. Irmin likes it. He likes to say "ca-ching" when he gets points.

Our weekly routine takes its toll and our games have to wait for us in the closet. I (Erasmus) am sort of glad that we built a little buffer in the first week, although I see it melting away. Anyway, this evening we played Safranito (library find again) and I have to admit, that I was surprised how entertaining the game was for everybody. We all enjoyed the artwork and theme the game had to offer. Irmin likes the throwing-dexterity-aspect and Jutta appreciates the great dose of luck which eliminates some age advantage. I really savoured when I ran out of cash, it made my throws much more meaningful. All in all a fun game we consider buying.

After we played Formula Dé mini together, we decided to get the real thing and bought Formula D. Today we (Irmin & Erasmus) tried it for the first time. The components are very appealing. Irmin loves it. He wanted to play with all the extra rules and extra driver abilities, but we started slowly and used only the advanced gear tablet, no extra rules and had only a one lap race. Irmin instantly wanted to play again after we finished.

Today we (Irmin & Erasmus) added some rules. Everybody had a two car race team for two laps. Two cars crashed and Irmin won by far. Of course the game is very luck driven, but when you're ok with that it is a very fun game. Soon we will play the next race.

Irmin suggested Formula D this morning, so we played. Unfortunately Irmin had a very rough time for the simple reason of bad luck. After a false stall he had some bad rolls, some damage points and a lot of ground to make up. His conclusion is (after a little time to recover)... you cannot change bad luck, put perhaps a little houserule can give the last player a little advantage.

We all enjoy Quarriors. We've already played it many times. It's a bit frustrating if the dice are against you the whole game long, but since it only takes like 20 minutes or so, you can survive. Irmin likes the cartoony artwork and rolling dice and fighting monsters are always fun.

I think it's time to get the first expansion.

We all like this game. Normally we have a lot of fun with it, but this time it was just an OK game. Irmin still prefers it to "Um Krone und Kragen" (to court the king).
