I just recently got back into board gaming and it started with building a bunch of my own print & play titles. I quickly escalated to adding some games to my collection however the "Do-It-Yourself" nature of Print & Play carried over into a serious habit of modifying the storage of the games.

I really seem to enjoy spending time figuring out how I would make inserts for the various games to make them more practical and easy to setup/use. I'm sure there are better solutions, but I like what I've done.

I've decided to keep a little Geeklist where I'll add any new storage mods that I end up with.

Edit: I'll also be adding links to the DIY Foam core insert master list which I suggest you also should.

This is where it all really started. I got D-Day Dice from the Kickstarter and immediately knew I needed to do something to store the cards. Found one of the online tuck box generators and created boxes for the cards.

I really liked that I could store everything in the tin box if I packed it appropriately.

I also am a fan of Flash Point but didn't like the loose cardboard pieces or the idea of just bagging everything. So this was my first complicated foam core build where I measured how the expansions would fit to create way to store the pieces and have the board and box tight enough to not worry about it when vertical on a shelf or in transit.

This is what it looked like after I got the Urban Expansion and the new Meeples.
Board Game: Flash Point: Fire Rescue

Unfortuntely, the 2nd story added more cardboard chits than I expected, and now it doesn't look quite as nice. I may need to go back to the drawing board.

I really like playing Village but I didn't like to just use baggies to store everything and I wanted to create a tray for organization that I could actually use during the game play. After hunting around, I found some great inspiration from Agricola owners and decided the design I wanted to make. This is the most complicated concept but I wanted a bottom base to store the basic items and then a tray for the cubes, merchant tiles and manufacturing goods. After a bunch of sketching, I finally ended up with this:

As discussed in one of the threads, a few people were surprised that some of the boat cards were just placed on the larger license cards. Rather than replace the insert, I created a small foam core holder to keep the cards from rattling around as much.

I felt the original insert was just fine but I wanted to make it easier to randomize the different colored tiles. I already saw in one post somebody had used dice bags and another post a relative had sewn pouches for them.

Even though I've never used a sewing machine before, I figured it couldn't be that hard. Bought some fabric and thread at a local store and it turned out to be pretty simple.

Board Game: The Castles of Burgundy

First, take the sewing machine from my parents house. Next, fold over the top to make an area for the rope and run it through the machine. Finally, fold the material into the rectangle and run it through the machine on the side and bottom. Cut the fabric, invert it, and all of sudden I have a tile pouch. Worked better than I had expected. Maybe someday I'll make a pouch for the rest of the non-random components.

I used to have this in lots of little baggies but then I bought the expansion and decided I needed to make it a little more user friendly. Now the box can also hold the resources during play. It is a little hard to make out but each box has a small 45 degree piece along one edge to help get things out.

Here are a couple pictures of the completed box and the removable tile tray:

I've played a couple games of Macao and every once in awhile I don't rotate the windrose exactly right and temporarily forget which side a couple of the cubes are on.

Here is the solution I finally created using the original Windrose:

The idea for this storage modification actually came from a couple different sources. I need to give credit to Aardschokker's storage idea
Board Game: Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island
as well as folks like 28green and Universal Head.

This time I was looking for a way to have a useful playing tray as well as storing all the cards in a way that would be very quick to get the game up and running.

I decided to create 2 layer system. The board keeps all of the tokens and chits in place when the box is closed.

The top tray comes out and can be used during the came, while the bottom tray has all of the setup pieces that are set out on the board separated and ready to go.

Here is a closer look at the top tray with the cut out for the board.

Edit - January 3, 2014: Someone asked me for details on the build so I created a google sketchup model and then exploded it to put in all the measurements. Here are the views and I'll see if I can load the model into the files section.

I got a copy of Galaxy Trucker in a Math Trade. While the game was in great condition, the insert had seen better days so I decided to do a little upgrading.

Here you can see the insert in the box with space for the tiles and cards and then removable boxes for the money, cubes, crew, ships and batteries.

I liked the insert that Blueprints had, except the cards were just loose and the dice bag was too small. I went ahead and created a new dice bag and then figured I'd make an insert to hold it all.

Another quick entry for the King of Tokyo. I put this together after I got the expansion. There are some better inserts out there, but this seems to be good enough for me. The little box is just a plug to hold the dice and monster score boards in securely. The top is notched for the main board.

Edit: Per the conversation below, I created a 3d model of the insert so I could get the dimensions. There are a couple of areas where my dimensions look slightly off, so I would make sure that you build this with the Belfort components just to validate things. Specifically the length of the top tray may be off by 0.1cm and the stepped triangle area may be slightly off as well.

The first set of images are of all the trays, then just the bottom trays and then finally the top tray from underneath so you can see the cutout area for the Guild Tiles.

Next are all the dimensions for the top tray. Please note that the triangular stepped section is just approximate dimensions since I built it with leftover parts.

Opened up the Resistance to play with my family the other night and everything was just a big jumble. I decided to create a way to keep the various card groups (good/bad guys, quest cards, lancelot expansion, resistance mission cards) separate since we don't usually use them all. The rest just sort of happened based on the remaining room in the box.

The box is an odd shape for the cards and the tokens so I looked around to figure out how people were storing the game. I actually used printed up the tuckboxes: Tuckboxes for The Resistance: Coup KS. Then I realized I could use the token tuckbox and a small foamcore wedge and then just put room for the cards right next to it.

I got Cosmic Encounter in a Math Trade and immediately started thinking about how to store it. Found some great inspiration in the Cosmic Encounter Gallery and the card dividers (Card dividers for base game and expansions).

Despite only having the base game and the Cosmic Conflict Expansion, I decided to make an insert that would support a full 8 players and all of the expansions.

The first two images show the insert with the warp on the top and the removable tray for the player pieces and other tokens.
From gallery of mholzma
From gallery of mholzma

The second two images are with the holder for the player pieces removed and then finally everything removed. Note the planets are sitting under all of the ships. Unfortunately, I ran out of space and had to have a gap in the walls to fit the planets properly on the one side.

Finally, the cards sit against a removable (and adjustable) block and I also left room for sleeves for the cards.

Board Game: Cosmic Encounter
From gallery of mholzma

Edit: Adding plans and dimensions for a request by Nafmi. The first two pictures are the base box with measurements and one of the two identical removable trays that I built. I used 5mm thick foam core and cut a square out in the base board that was about the size of the removable tray so they would sit flush with the bottom of the box.
From gallery of mholzma
From gallery of mholzma

Here are a couple composite images of the base box and then with the individual removable trays. You will note that with both trays in, there is about a 4mm gap on top to make room for the scoreboard.
From gallery of mholzma
From gallery of mholzma
From gallery of mholzma

Edit #2: Added a picture since I have added the expansions for
Incursion, Conflict, Storm and Dominion into the box and there is still just enough room for Alliance.
Edit #3: Added Cosmic Alliance awhile ago and now added Cosmic Eons. I had to cut the bottom foamcore out below the aliens and removed 7 aliens from the game to make it fit. Those are in a bag in case I ever decide to add them back in.

I admit that Rahdo's run-through of Glen More got me very interested in the game. Of course, it is very hard to find in the US and going for $60-70 in the market and you can't buy it on Amazon.de it seems.

I decided to see how hard it would be to actually craft my own version of the game since I can't buy it direct from the company. I should have detailed all the work, but here is the final product.

Like many people, I saw the little box inside the big Dixit box and thought to myself how nice it would be to have a travel sized Dixit instead of all of the extra empty space under the big score track. I have been playing with making boxes and boards, after my homemade Glen More. I wish I took more pictures during construction but I ended up making a nice trifold board that fits underneath a foamcore insert to hold the cards, chits and bunnies. Then I made a box cover and put the Dixit image back on top. The main downside is there is no room for expansions.

Update 10/19/2016: Turns out that I needed to buy a couple of expansion cards for the game. The Dixit expansion boxes are weird shapes that did not make it easy to store multiple sets of cards, so I was able to transform an expansion box form Port Royal into a Dixit Expansion Box and add a customized cover.

I couldn't help making a quick little insert for Impulse, a fantastic new game I just got. I am sure someone else can come up with a way to segment the ships by player color, but it works pretty well for me to just dump them in. I think the biggest lesson I learned on this one was that I wish I had made the slots a little bit bigger in case I decide to sleeve the cards.

I received my Kickstarter of Ultimate Werewolf and thought that the box was a lot bigger than the cards I actually had in it. Previously I built a foam core insert for One Night Ultimate Werewolf which showed I only needed 1/3 of the box for the components.

This seemed like a good time to combine everything Werewolf into one box. I decided cut out my One Night Ultimate Werewolf insert and build a card catalog style holder for the new Ultimate Werewolf cards (which will fit sleeved). As usual, there is a bit of space on top for the moderator pad and all of the instructions.

Here you can see the full insert and then the cards removed or the One Night Ultimate Werewolf tray removed:

The Lords of Vegas insert was clearly not made for the game so it was time to change it up and make my own. I also saw the mini-poker chips that others had used to replace the paper money. That meant I needed a good storage solution that would work if I stood the box up on its side.

I have a tray that holds all of the casino pieces that can be used during play. I also created an additional tray to hold the additional risers if I ever get UP Expansion. The cards sit on top of the poker chip box.

The poker chip box has a lid that is held in by a small ridge that you can see the details in the last picture. The box also has enough room for the extra money that the UP expansion would add.

I have to admit, I really like the chips to replace the money. I may eventually build individual trays for the player pieces, but they fit nicely in bags in the open space. The other thing I learned is that building a space to make it easier to pull the poker chip holder meant that I had to figure out a new place to store the cards.

Betrayal has a good insert for everything but all of the chits and the room tiles. I decided to build a new insert to hold everything and have a removable card tray for playing the game.

Here is the box with the instruction manuals on top in a recess and with both the spacer in and removed.

Here you can see the removable trays that hold all of the punch outs. I don't think you would use the trays during game play, just pull out the ones you need after the Haunt. The last image shows the card tray removed as well.

This last pictures show everything removed from the insert and then the starting board removed from the recess of the last tray.

My biggest lesson on this insert is to not forget the instruction manuals. I had to do a bit of tweaking after everything was built to get them back on top. In the end, I think it worked really well though.

Edit (February 15, 2016): I was asked to include some measurements, so I created a 3d model.

First a picture of the overall insert from the top and bottom and then the major dimensions

Next, I cut-away the front so you could see how the trays are aligned and a couple pictures with each tray removed.

The next 3 images show the detailed inner dimensions for the insert (still hiding the front panel just to make it easier to see.

Finally, the dimensions for the top, middle and bottom trays.

I also have the 3d Sketchup model available if you GM me. Thanks and enjoy.

At the Gates of Loyang is a great game and it plays really well Solo. I decided I needed a way to carry it with me when I travel without taking over the already very over sized box. It just so happens the solo-only game components fit perfectly in the One Night Ultimate Werewolf.

I created and printed up label and then applied it to the box top.

To fit in the box, I created a foldable player board.

Finally, built a small foam-core insert to keep the vegemeeples separate from the cards from the money/tokens.
