My recent move into the wargaming realm has had me on a "war kick" for a while. So, in the spirit of my recent forum post about great war books (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/113221), let's all list some of our favorite WWII movies.

Some simple rules:
-the movie must be about WWII
-it must be a "WAR" movie. Saving Private Ryan is a war movie. Schindler's List isn't.
-and finally, I'm a huge film buff, so I'll always pick the quality movie over the realistic one (though both would be even better). So basically no points will be deducted for unrealistic films if they are good films and capture the spirit of a good war movie.

I'll start with a few of my favorites...feel free to add comments on their historicity or add your own!

THE BIG RED ONE (Sam Fuller, 1980)

I'm a huge Sam Fuller fan and I have to say the movie doesn't get nearly enough respect (well...a lot of his movies need more respect actually). Anyway, great movie with one totally insane scene after another. And apparently it is all true--the cigar smoking soldier is Sam Fuller, and the stories are all his.

PATTON (Franklin Schaffner, 1970)

The other "almost the entire western front" movie I'll add, Patton really is a definitive war movie. George C. Scott is great as usual. This also seems like it is a pretty historically accurate movie...is that correct?

DAS BOOT (Wolfgang Peterson, 1981)

A genre within the genre of war movies would be the submarine movies. This is probably my favorite and all the elements are here: depth charges, "pings", sending up a fake oil slick (I think that's in this movie too...been a while).

Hehe...and Operation Petticoat would be a nice choice if you are in a lighthearted silly mood

SAHARA (Zoltan Korda, 1943)

Along with the Sub film, you gotta love Desert Movies. These are some of my favorites, though I haven't seen many WWII ones (I love Morocco, Beau Geste (silent and sound), and the like).

Anyway, Sahara was a cut above most of the Hollywood war films made during the war. Bogart's great, and it has tons of desert atmosphere!

I'll have to check out The Desert Fox and Five Graves to Cairo.

THE DIRTY DOZEN (Robert Aldrich, 1967)

The other genre you gotta love: a tough as nails sergeant whipping a bunch of green recruits into shape. The fact that most of these guys are more psychotic than green just makes the movie that much more fun! One of the great "guy flicks" of all time!

Very good war movie. People will always debate the accuracy vs. moviemaking-craft issues in these movies, but this was a great movie.

Cross of Iron - 1977 - James Coburn, Maximilian Schell, James Mason, David Warner

Sam Peckinpah's "death ballet" foray into the Russian Front. Worth watching not just for the real T-34s that go crunching around, but also for Coburn's gritty, burned-out, cynical-but-still-somewhat-fairhanded approach to an NCO fighting for a losing cause. (Where'd they get those tanks? Egyptian or Syrian flea market?)

Downfall (2004) Oliver Hirschbiegel

This grim film is set during the final days of Berlin, mostly in Hitler's bunker compoud at the center of the city. There's some combat, not much, but a lot of suicide by pill, bullet, or both.
It may be closer to Shindler's List than SPR. But it's one of the better war "films" I've seen in a while; so i'll add it.

THE SANDS OF IWO JIMA (Alan Dwan, 1949)

Dwan was another one of those directors that was never quite as good after the silent era (his version of Robin Hood is AWESOME--despite Fairbanks' performance). This movie is pretty by the numbers, but still a quintisential war film. And as I said, I love just about anything with John Wayne in it (though I haven't seen a lot of his war films).

The Guns of Navarone (1961)

One of, if not the BEST WWII movies. I think it is often underrated and overlooked. A crack team of allied saboteurs are assigned to destroy two enormous long-range field guns on a Nazi-held island. An action/adventure classic offers that great performances & blazing excitement. Peck is simply great.

THE TRAIN (John Frankenheimer, 1964)

The French Resistance fights to prevent the Nazis from hauling hundreds of great paintings back to Germany as Paris is about to fall to the Allies; with Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield. Another excellent train-themed WWII movie: VON RYAN'S EXPRESS (Mark Robson, 1965) starring Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard.

(I also reccommend these non-WWII Frankenheimer films: The Manchurian Candidate and The Birdman of Alcatraz.)

"The Thin Red Line"

Terrence Malick's stunning and masterful look at the soldiers who took the beaches in the South Pacific, The Thin Red Line has more than it’s share of detractors. But this is easily one of the most amazing films to come out of Hollywood (kinda) in the past 10 years. Straight-ahead war-movie fans might be turned off by all the “lizards and natives” shots and the somewhat meandering narrative, but pay close attention, because that is the point.

One of my all-time favorite films.

Stalingrad (2004) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108211/)

A German/Russian movie about the siege of Stalingrad, told from the German POV. A platoon of German soldiers comes off an Italian vacation to reinforce the fighting in Stalingrad. They get trapped in the city, then things slowly start to get worse as the siege drags on. Conditions degrade horribly and morale wears as thin as their sanity. Then some of the men begin to plan their own escape.

The battle scenes are pretty intense: street fighting and anti-tank battles in the snow. There's also a chase through the sewers. Gruesome and bloody stuff. Watching the men fall apart is morbidly fascinating.

Through most of the movie, the tension level is pretty high. It's only the last part where things get very existential and artsy, leading to a weird, desolate ending. But the first 90% is top-notch and is enough for me to highly recommend it.

Action in the North Atlantic (1943)

Humphrey Bogart and Raymond Massey are hard-bitten merchant marine sailors. It's full of cliches (including a kitten that drowns in the first act to make SURE you'll hate those Germans), but it also has great effects for its day, and the U-boat scenes are terrific.
