Simply my personal top ten of thematic games.

As a german ameritrasher for me theme is a very important aspect of a game. Sometimes theme is more important for me then the quality of the game mechanics or the tactical or strategical aspect. If a game is able to give me the feeling that I am an important part of a story and my decisions changes the world and the environment of the game, then this is the most fun I can have with a game.

Do you want to play "Lord of the Rings"? I mean the whole story from the books? Then "War of the Ring" is the game to play! It is amazing how much elements from the epic story about the fellowship of the ring is included in this game. Sure, this game has its problems: It is lengthy, it needs its time for setup and it is only for two. But if you have enough time and one person who wants to play this game with you it is absolute great fun for the rest of the day!

This is Star Trek in a box! Also the mechanics fitting together very well. Explore unknown space sectors and planets while fulfilling you missions is great fun. I'm lost in space and loving it! Unfortunately the components are not that good...

When it is a cold foggy evening and the wind makes creepy voices when it blows around the house then it is time to play "A Touch of Evil". As a hero in the 18th century you run through a small town and its surroundings to find a mighty villain who brings death and desperation to the townsfolk. On your way you will fight against the minions of the evil, trying to prepare yourself for the fight against the monster. But before you can free the land from the thread you have to find its lair.

This is mechanically very similar to "Arkham Horror" but though it feels different for me. The components are top notch and the horror atmosphere spreads in the last corner of the gaming room. Sure, this game isn't very innovative or special but it is so much fun to play!

This Items stands for each of the three DnD boardgames available. These three games are simple coop dungeon crawler. The rules are very easy to understand and streamlined. Your group of heroes trying to fight through hordes of monsters to fulfill the winning condition of the chosen scenario. During your turn you move around, fight against all kinds of monsters, explore the dungeon and draw events. Doesn't sound very exciting, right? But it is! When the big monster boss dies just on the turn before all would be lost then this creates a amazing thrill. Sure, sometimes it all ends in a single die roll but the way to this moment is the fun in this game!

You are a lonesome mage who tries to be the mightiest and most influential mage in the world. But first you have to learn a lot about the people in the villages, the other mages in the high towers all around the land, the monsters in the wilderness and all the other things around you.

This game box has really a whole world in it. Villages, cities, dungeons, temple, mage towers, monsters... actually everything about adventures in a fantasy world. Because of its complex rules it isn't easy to get into it but as a player you can feel the world around you in every single turn.

Also interesting: The game mechanics are pretty "euro'ish" but the feeling is very thematic...

No I didn't want to become a fire fighter when I was a little boy! I wanted to become a famous archeologist - like Indiana Jones. Of course now I am not an archeologist. Not even approximately. But when I play Fortune and Glory I am able to be Indiana Jones for about 90 minutes full of adventures, temples, artifacts and evil enemies. I love the cool cliffhanger cards: If fail on an attribute check or fight (mostly because of a bad die rolls) you flip the card and read what happens because of your incompetence. In most cases you have to make another check to find out if you can handle the new situation. It's a kind of a "last chance" for your character. But the all dominant die roll have to wait until your next turn because after you read the cliffhanger aloud it is the next players turn. Amazingly thrilling!

A small group of people is lost on an island. An island with dangerous wild animals all around, just barely enough food for everybody and not a single sign of civilization anywhere. This game is a cooperative worker placement game. But even if worker placement isn't well known as a good story telling mechanic this game does a very good job in it. In "Robinson Crusoe" it is absolutely possible that your camp is attacked by an animal that you had encountered turns before, while gathering for food and which then followed you to your camp. In my opinion this is a great way of story telling and extremely thematic!

This game is dungeon crawling as its best. One overlord who controls the hordes of monsters, a group of heroes which fight for their lives, a campaign with a good story and very varied scenarios, character development and thats all in a cool fantasy setting. What more do you want from thematic dungeon crawler? IMO nearly nothing! Simply pure, great F.U.N.

Exploring an old mansion with the pure evil in it is exciting. If the story which takes place in that mansion is based on H-P. Lovecrafts "C'thulu"-Mythos it is amazing exciting. And if a board games uses this setting to mix parts from roleplay games and classical boardgames to create a "story telling boardgame" a real theme monster comes out.
It is a bit like a mixture of "Descent" and "Arkham Horror": A Keeper (the overlord) controls the monsters and bad things while the other players work together to find out how they could stop the pure evil. One of the extra exciting aspects is that, at the start, the investigator players don't know what to do to win. The strategist will say "Well, if I don't know how to win then I can't be very effective on that". Yes. That is correct. Absolutely. And absolute irrelevant for this games. This game is not about to win. This game is about a game experience that tells an entertaining and horrible story.

And finally my number one. This game, released in 2005, is simply THE thematic game. With all its expansions and the thousands of cards full of fantastic stories is every single minute just thematic fun. Yes, this game is chaotic and extremely luck dependent. Yes, this game can take 4 hours or longer. yes, you will need 0.5 hours to setup the game if you want to play with all the small expansions and one or two big box expansions... of course with the expansion for its expansions. Yes, for a newbie it is very difficult to learn all the rules. But I don't care about these things. When I am able to play this game I just enjoy the fantastic experience this game provides me and my gaming group....

If you like games that drip with theme, try this one. Although I haven't had a chance to try it as a 2-player game yet, it's totally awesome as a solitaire game. It's a card-driven game much like Twilight Struggle and 1960: The Making of the President. It's probably a bit more complicated to learn than either of those, but it's well worth the effort.

The card play is totally cool, and you're constantly forced to make tough decisions. It has that classic Eurogame feel of too much to do and not enough actions to get it all done...
