----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So each year the Spiel marks the beginning of a new game year for me. It means acquiring a large number of new games, trying to play as many as possible and finding space for them in my home-these last two things are quite a challenge! So I dedicate this list to new games.

So everyone is attracted to a new game for different reasons, what factor is strongest in choosing a new game for you?

So appearance of the game may be one of the reasons you've chosen a new game. What game did you recently acquire mainly for its looks?

For many gamers, the mechanisms of play may play an important role in choosing a game. Name a game you acquired primarily because you liked the mechanism and what was the primary mechanism?

Games played 10/21 - 10/28

1830 Cardgame
Played this for Extra Life with Lenny and Matt and Shane. We played it twice, because the first time we played it, well, we forgot to do income tax and forgot to pull out the Pay Dividend cards. Suffice it to say, we screwed up that first game about as badly as you can. However, we all enjoyed it enough to play straight away again. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, and did reasonably well. I can't say I love the income tax on the last turn as it just seemed odd that Matt and I who were doing well ended up losing because we had more money than Lenny. I know you can compensate for that, but it just felt odd that there was no "end" game changes.

Keythedral
Played with Matt and Lenny. Matt needed to play this again as he played the dreaded 5-player version, and you really shouldn't play this with 5. Three is the sweet spot I think. This is still one of my favorite games even though it is quite mean. It is the only game I think where everyone thinks they are losing all the time. It ended up being quite close.

Trias
I like this game, but I am terrible at it. I just can't figure out what to do in it.

Zooloretto
I normally like this game, but this last time it just felt empty and pointless. I will keep it, and play it still, but I am not as excited to try it again.

Cavum
Finally got to try Cavum. We plodded through the rules, and there are a lot of them, and it paid off. This is a good game. I don't expect I will ever be very good at it, but I like the mechanisms and the theme. The only portion I didn't like was the gem selling aspect at the end. It just feels tacked on.

Slapshot
This was a lot of silly fun. Glad I own it, and I expect I will play it again soon.

Games Played 10/18-10/31

(Highlights; the full list is on Google+ as usual)

Got in lots of games, many multiple times...

I hadn't played Burger Joint in a while - I just don't have enough time for two player games.

I played four Unpublished Prototypes, three for the first time, three of them my designs, and two of them four or more times.

I also played Trains four times, and I like it - I suspect the game has nearly peaked for me, but I think it's a sustainable peak, and one high enough to stick around.

I played Dicke Dämonen for the first - and likely last - time.

Two more games of Acquire; six to go.

In my games played spreadsheet, Zum Kuckuck won't be the last on the list this year, since I got in a second play. (It usually takes the spot, since I got rid of Zwergen Ziehen.)

Volta made it to five plays for me, and was my second favorite October discovery.

Two more plays of 1846: The Race for the Midwest, which might hit 40 plays for me this year. Both games were _very_ enjoyable, even if I failed to do one of the things I was trying for. I did dump a company successfully, which was interesting, even if it didn't quite work.

Three plays of Numeri. While I didn't include Rudi Hoffman on my list of Game Authors I look for, that's because of the emphasis on new games. But I do continue to seek out obscure Hoffman designs; they are classic German games, fun for a family, in a way that seems to be viewed about as poorly as children's games or Monopoly on BGG.

Merchant of Venus - having heard about the new edition, I don't feel any desire to let go of my copy (or my emergency backup copy).

No new arrivals, but games are in the mail...

HEADLINER

Finally finished painting my War of the Ring set. I'll not sign up for such a painting task, ever again.

PLAYS 10/22/2012 - 10/28/2012

Deadwood x 1
Just an okay game, but ultimately not one I'll add to my collection. It's too light to be much tempted by it.
Dungeon Pets x 1
I wish I could get this game to the table more often. I really enjoy it when I do. No game I've ever played feels anything like it. It's unique.
Ghost Stories x 1
Still my favorite co-op game. I feel like I'm well past the base game's replay value. I'm excited to start playing it with its expansions more.
Hanabi x 1
This is a peculiar little game. It's almost like it exists only to create a meta-game within each group: How much are you willing to cheat as a group to win? Group-think integrity? Or maybe we actually aren't cheating...Is this the game? Are we good, or are we cheating? It's very strange. But for whatever reason, people always have fun playing it. My group was no exception. We were laughing hard.
Horse Fever x 1
Played this one solo to get the rules down. It actually turns out to be a very interesting game to play solo because of how the race is handled. Much is decided beyond the players' powers, so it's a lot of fun in that sense. It's strange that the game still works for me in that regard. I guess it's because the decisions players make before the race begins are interesting enough that I still enjoy it a lot. I'm excited to see how it works out with multiple players.
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game x 1
I'm not sure what to think about this game. In the end, it's not good enough for me to dare to take the financial plunge into an LCG. It would have to be something really special for me to get involved with that endless money pit.

RECENTLY ACQUIRED

none

NOTES

If I can get some decent shots, I'll post some images of my finished minis for WotR. I don't have a wide-angle lens, so it might be a challenge.

Games Played (10/14 - 10/27)

Thunderstone x5
I'm starting to find some tougher opponents and losing some games on Yucata now...which actually is reviving my interest.

Glory to Rome x2
The local thrill seems to be holding up pretty well. My wife continues to find this one engaging and fun, and I'm not getting tired of it either. I'm just now starting to entertain strategic notions, but I'm sure I play poorly.

Saint Petersburg x2
I'm starting to find this one a little boring. Nothing very interesting has happened in the last few games. But its so convenient on Yucata that its hard not to play just one more.

1830: Railways & Robber Barons x1
Finished a PBEM game. This is the 2nd successive game where I ended up with no privates at all. I think I was in a competitive position in this one, but then a player pushed the train rush when I think it was actually against his interest...leading to the game ending more quickly by bankruptcy. I've played a fair bit of 1830, and its never felt like the same game twice.

Battle Beyond Space x1
I really like this game. Its so quick and clean, but feels compelling and the theme absolutely carries through. I think this will be a regular in the rotation for a long time.

Dominion x1
My son requested this one. He usually beats me, but I tried his own strategy against him this time...and pulled out a win. I hadn't played in a while. I'm surprised at how little of interest I found in the game in general. I guess the newness of deck-building as a system is just gone, and I find this one on the bland side in hindsight.

Fury of Dracula (second edition) x1
I haven't played this one in years, but I dusted it off as a Halloween game. I'm hoping we can get a couple more plays in during the season. This is just one more of those well-themed games FFG puts out that makes for a brilliant game playing experience with an engaged table, if you can tolerate a bit of luck in your games. I need to see if my wife likes this one. If you're not familiar with it: imagine the skeleton of Scotland Yard clothed in a rich Dracula theme with lots of chrome added.

Peloponnes x1
I was very glad to revisit this one. My opinion went up compared to my initial playing. I hope we get to play this one again a few times. The auction is probably not as novel as it feels, but I find this one to be effective as a quick-playing civ-lite.

Seasons x1
Played once. We went ahead with the card drafting even though no one really knew the deck at all. I found it to drag on, but I suspect the play time will be more reasonable with familiarity. I'd wager that in the final analysis I won't really like this one, but right now I find myself wanting to play it again.

Zombicide x2
We played this twice at Guys Game Night. It feels like "Zombies", except in a game that isn't painful to play. The theme is great. I'm impressed with the production value for a Kickstarter project. The rules are pretty much a mess, but I think there is a worthwhile game under there. If we can sort out the rules, I'm looking forward to future scenarios.

Lenny's Overdue Games Report

October 20 - 28

November 20-21 Extra Life game marathon at The Haunted Game Cafe

Began the day around 11:30 AM, playing 1830 Cardgame. As Skippen mentioned earlier, we messed it up but good the first go around, so we played it a second time. (I only logged one play though.)

Next was Twilight Struggle with Matt Cook. Again, by random assignment, I was the USSR. This is the deepest game we've played to date, as in number of turns played - 8. Matt did a fine job of defending the areas he needed to while also giving me all kinds of trouble in SE Asia. I countered by being a burr in his side in Central and South America. He won by playing the event that ends the game early, although he was far enough ahead that, had we done the final scoring, the USSR might have scored better, but not enough to swing the VP marker to the Soviet's side.

We followed this up with Omen: A Reign of War, a game I gave Matt for his birthday. Not sure how I feel about this game...I wish I would have learned it at a time I was a little more fresh. (It was early evening by this point.)

We played a little Elk Fest just because we needed something lite and silly. This fit the bill.

Next we were taught Seasons by our friend Quentin, in a 4P game, which he assured us was not the ideal player count. Still, it was a very enjoyable game, and I look forward to playing it again.

Finally, we wrapped up the event (by now it was 1 AM) with Escape: The Curse of the Temple, the hot new game, and for good reason. This was very fun, and of course you learn it in a minute and play it in 10. We played it a couple of times.

10/23 Once & Future Gamers, sans Gary. As such, we postponed our planned game of Eclipse in favor of one of Skippen's favorites, Keythedral. I was doing quite well in this until late in the game, when I made a tactical error and passed when I should have done almost anything else. This is a good game, and I would love to play it again.

10/29 Worthy Gamers, played Village again, in a very competitive 4p game. I did much better this time, and in spite of coming in 3rd, felt I was in the game to the very end.

Acquisitions: OMG! I've purchased 20 games in the BGG Con Virtual Flea Market, plus 2 that I'm picking up from Skippen, including Sutter's Mill, which Dave K got me interested in. Funagain should have Autokrator and Hanabi for me, and I'm hoping to pick up CO₂ as well.

Plays for Oct 21 through 27:

5
Adaman - Android App

4
Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small

2
The National Parks Game

Alien Frontiers
Dominion
Lost Cities

Of note is really just the National Parks Game. It is a simple deck builder (sorry!) aimed at the general public more so than gamers. The theme is acquiring types of "features" (animals, plants, terrain) and then using them to establish national parks. It includes a good amount of info on the parks as well. I could see it being sold in the park gift shops.

The gameplay is actually pleasant. It is easy to see how streamlined it is, and a big gamer would probably get bored on it relatively quickly, but more casual gamers could definitely get some replay out of it.

EDIT: Oh yes forgot to say I am helping to playtest it.
