The Top 100 Euro Games (Images, Pictorial Review Links, Stats, and More!)
- Carl Garber(CarlG)Canada
In deciding what information to include for each entry, I asked myself, "What information helps me decide to check out a game further?" And this is what I came up with:
Knowing a game is designed by a certain favorite designer will likely get me to check out a game. Likewise the length of game, the amount of players, and the weight of the game are all categories that help me eliminate games from my "potentials" list, or they can help me zero in on a certain type of game I am looking for for a specific gaming situation(ie. if I want to add a more family friendly game I will look for games under an hour that are weighted in the 2s, wheras if I am looking for more of a gamer's game I will zero in on higher weighted games with longer play times).
How the game will look on my table
I have included images of each game in play(or at the end of play) to give you an idea of what it will look like on your table. I know some games will immediately turn me off just due to how they look, or how much space they take up! There are so many great games out there that I often need something that appeals asthetically as well as has great gameplay. I have tried to choose pictures that show all of the games components as well as pictures that have a "large" viewing option so that you can click on the image and zoom in closer to get a better look.
In the same vein as above, I like to check out reviews that will give me a closer look at the components as well as give me an idea of how the game plays and some impressions of the game. For each entry I have include a link to at least 1 pictorial review(if there was one) for you to check out each game further. I tried to include the most comprehensive pictorial reviews for each game.
Lastly, seeing the trajectory of a game in the ratings can help me determine the replayability of a game. If a game is still climbing upwards, or staying level in its geek rating years after it is released I know that the game is a quality game with staying power. However, if I see a highly rated game that has dropped down dramatically over the months(for example a game like Vasco da Gama) that tells me that hype likely drove it higher than it deserves. Also, I just happen to love statistics in general and thought it would be neat to track the Top 100 Euros in the included categories. I have also included a "2013 YTD" bolded stat line at the bottom of each item so you can easily see how a game's ranking, geek rating, avg rating, or number of ratings has change since January 1st, 2013.
This list has already helped me become aware of games that I had previously overlooked. I hope that it does the same for you!
