I've been active with BGG for about five years now. Every so often, just like when you hear an old song or see old photos, I see games come up that immediately snap me back to a memory of my childhood that involved that game. I am sure I am not alone.

I'm not that old (37), but as I look some of these games came out a LONG time ago.

For each game that you list, discuss any particular memories that come up from the game.

My family loved to play train games. On Sunday afternoon, I remember playing this game for 2-3 hours with my brothers and sister and parents. My dad would inevitably win after purchasing the Pennsylvania and then just waiting us out as we hoped we never had to go to the Northeast.

My mom used to sing songs about all the cities she would go through. Her gameplay was always better than her singing, even when she scored last.

We lived pretty close to Santa Anita race track in Southern California. We used to go once per year, so this game was a no-brainer for my dad to pick up for us.

We played it quite a bit. One time, my parents used pennies (that they provided) as currency. We each walked away with some cash from playing the game, which was pretty cool.

My parents still play it a lot with my sister and her kids.

My father had this when he was in college. I don't think we ever finished a full game as kids, but rather we loved to set it up and put the sails in the plastic ships. We would play for a little while, get distracted and clean it up.

My brother and I puchased this when I was 12. We poured through the rules (I still remember they were 20+ pages long). We played it quite a bit and every school vacation we would play the advanced version.

We would leave the game up for many days. We had a 3 year old brother at the time. We didn't have a lock on our room door so we had to fashion one using a chair.

I loved this game and it had an impact on me going into the Navy. However, we got rid of it after we graduated from the Academy, as we didn't have anyone to play it with.

I picked this one up after we got tired of 2nd Fleet. It didn't see anywhere as many plays as 2nd Fleet, but it was enjoyable.

I hung onto this until last year when I finally sold it, knowing that it was likely my kids would never be into it.

This game always sat ominously at the top of the closet, tempting us with it's "adult looking" cover.

We played it twice against my dad's recommendation. He was right, it wasn't worth playing.

I remember seeing this at Toys R Us on the shelf and having envy for months as I anxiously awaited Christmas, wondering if my parents would go for the price tag ($40 if I remember right). They picked it up for me and we got quite a bit of play out of it.

My favorite memory of this game was the last time I played it. I brought it over to my grandfather's house when I was in middle school. He was of course a WW2 vet. I taught him how to play it and we played it until late at night, I the Axis and he the Allies. I remember the disgust on his face when my pile of infantrymen in Japan easily defeated his flotilla of battleships trying to bombard me.

My dad was big into investing. I don't think that he ever invested that much money, but man did he research it a lot.

He picked this up. I don't remember much about the game (other than the "Speculative" stock). He obviously wiped the floor with us the several times we played it.

I was a big golfer when I was growing up, so my parents purchased this for one Christmas. I used to play it a lot, but I could never get anyone to play it more than once with me.

Now that I remember it, it consisted of rolling dice and looking up the dice roll on a table. The only decision that you had was to go for the green or to layup on a par 5.

My kids have this game today. My wife purchased it for them against my recommendation. To this day I won't play it with them. My wife plays it with them and someone always ends up in tears.

We didn't play a whole lot of board games growing up. My big brother was way too temperamental, and would turn any game into a screaming fit when the rules didn't suit him. Family Game Night thus turned out to be a rather short-lived tradition.

But Fireball Island was as much a playset as a game, and whenever a guy would get offed by a fireball, if was too awesome to worry about things like whether or not it was a legal move. In fact, I believe our house rule was that if a man lands on a space where he can get fireballed, he must get fireballed (no, I don't believe we ever fully completed a game).

As a teen I recall entering the Strategy Games club at UMass for the 1st time. The room was hazy with smoke. Two players (the cause of the smoke), one with a pipe & one chain smoking cigarettes were hunched over this game spread out on a table. The two, Stewart and Greg, I would later get to know and become friends with. Each would have many an opportunity to give me a thumping in all sorts of board games.

The was the first war game I purchased and then played... my mom got it for me during a series of sick days while in 6th grade. I had been nagging about it for a while, seeing it in the local hobby store (now long gone).

Had great fun with it; opened up the field for me and others. Dang if it wasn't hard to win as Japan, though...

This came close on the heels of VitP and WaS, my first real exposures to the hobby.

Elements of Jutland (hidden operational movement, check-box ship damage for battles) were the precursors of the GWAS/SWWAS systems, that drew me back into the hobby 20 years later.

Memorable moment: played against a friend in 7th grade; he took the RN, me the KM. He proceeded to scatter the Grand Fleet into little 4-8 ship detachments (was too worried he wouldn't find the Germans), that the HSF proceeded to gobble up one by one. After half the GF was on the bottom, we decided to call it a day. Blockade of Germany broken!
