The other night my wife and I were discussing what game to play with some new non-gaming friends when we get together with them. This conversation sparked a discussion of how light each of our games is. For purposes of our list we defined lightness as how easy a game is to learn and enjoy the first time a person plays it. We rated our games on a 1 to 5 scale (see below). And then ordered them within each rating.

I am not allowing additions this list as it represents my collection, carefully ordered. You are welcome to start your own Geeklist of your collection, or comment begging me to start another list where we can collectively make a list of games of various weights.

Rating system:

1: This game is so light that we can explain it in under 5 minutes and people can grasp the game after only a few minutes of playing.

2: This game takes about 5 minutes to explain. People get the hang of the game the first time, but often feel that they could do much better in a second time.

3: This game is best taught with a 5 minute overview and then other rules are explained as we play. People feel they understand the game after their first play, and can enjoy it, but realize that there is more going on than they can grasp in one play.

4: The rules often take closer to 10 minutes to explain. Players are not sure they grasp the game after one play, and often need 2 or 3 games before knowing if they like the game or not. New players will need some, but not constant, advice on what to do each turn.

5: The rules take at least 10 minutes to explain. First time players are easily overwhelmed and often require quite a bit of advice throughout their first game. Often a commitment to the theme, or enthusiasm from us is required to get the game to the table again.

I realize some of you own games that deserve a 6 (so heavy that you need to have played several hours of modern board gaming before you would consider showing them the game), but I intentionally do not buy games that heavy. I know I can't get them to the table, and I'm part of a great board gaming group if ever need to scratch my heavy game itch ( which I seldom get).

As this is an unpublished prototype of a friend of mine I cannot divulge too much about it. It is based on silly gesturing, and it works well with all sorts of people and ages. It is a physically active game, an so requires that setting.

This was a thrift store find. It has a helpful player aid, and is built of forming what are basically poker hands, making it easy to teach. The declaring-a-winner mechanic is a nice element, but still it is a light game.

it's tic-tac-toe (or noughts and crosses) with a twist. Easy to teach, but hard to get good at. Because it is so brain-burningly hard to get good at I am unlikely to use it at my go-to first game with a person unless they like hard, abstract games.

I have a lot of success playing this with people who are not gamers. Rules are a little complex (people want to put cards they receive in a trade into their hand, and, of course, keeping their cards in order), but with some shepherding through the early rounds people catch on. Building rows of beans gives people a sense of success, even if their final scores are lower than mine.

several layers of decision making, and multi-functional cards make this a bit more challenging of a game to learn. Being built on a system similar to blackjack though lowers the hurdle. This game fell out of favor with my wife and me and I have moved on to heavier games when we play two player games.

This is a good example of a game where a new player can can have and feel successful their first game without being good at the game. My first few games I would buy one of every card to see what it would do. The turns are simple enough (A B C) with only the intimidation factor of 16(?) stacks of cards and a long set up time being counting against it.

This was a hard one to place. The rules are easy enough to teach and to teach as you play, but for new players the game heavily favors the spies and the strategies for playing well as the resistance are not apparent out of the box. This game is best learned with no more than 1/3 of the players being new.

The rules and turns are not terribly difficult, but there is a lot going on and the strategy is not immediately apparent. Each card has a special ability, which to a new player is like an exception to the rules. Losing units can be discouraging to a new player, when in fact losing units is not that awful.

This game is simple enough at its core, with fairly simple turns, but some rules take a while to catch (for example the difference between an action and role). The tech cards though add a layer of complexity that new players are not often ready for. The strategies of this game are no apparent on a first play, but a new player can make it through without mistakes or major disappointments.

This game has a lot going on, with some almost optional parts like the senate and the cards, but it can be played at a simple enough level that a new player can muddle through and still feel okay about themselves. The rules explanation is long for new players and there are a lot of mechanics to explore in this game, making a first play rather unsatisfying.

I love this game, but there is a lot going on to pick up your first time playing. Each unit is unique and varies on several traits and the best move is not apparent to new players. The cards and the dice do make it more accessible that a “true wargame” but that does not make it a good game for playing with new players.

This is this high up for the complexity of the building options and for being unforgiving of poor play. People can be lead a little bit through the turns, but there are some unpleasant experiences such as being locked out of shipping, missing a chance at building, having too few colonists, and being blocked out of the market. I hope that people will be ready for this game after playing some of the others lower on this list several times, but I would not start here.

People always complain about the challenge of learning the symbols, which is part of the challenge of having fun your first time. Added to that is the complexity of engine building, and the importance of knowing what cards are in the game. Even experienced gamers need to play it a few times before they feel comfortable with it. Also the amount of secret information, the player's hand of cards, makes it a hard game to help new players play. Of course it is the complexity of engine building and anticipation of certain cards that make this such an enjoyable game after you get over the learning hump.

There is just a lot of detail to this game. The turns are involved and involve lots of die rolling, chart checking, and further die rolling. There's a lot of chrome and also a lot of book keeping. It is rewarding if you get into it, but overwhelming if you don't get into it. This is a game where I would much prefer the new player asked me to play it because the learning curve requires quite a bit of commitment to get through.
