EuroQuest is a fantastic boardgaming convention run by the Games Club of Maryland. I've had the pleasure of attending several EuroQuests in the past few years, and each one has been a great experience. For me, EQ is an opportunity to (a) play longer games that I normally don't get the chance to play with my gaming group at home (mostly because of kids' bedtimes and adults' lack of motivation), and (b) learn new games that I've been reading about on BGG.

This past weekend, I attended this year's event, and wanted to share my impressions of some of the games I played. Note that these are listed in no particular order.

My gaming buddies have developed an interest in the games of Stefan Feld. We really enjoy Trajan, particularly its unique mechanism for role selection (the mancala board), and were interested in trying out some other Feld games. Castles of Burgundy did not disappoint! The dice roll mechanism for selecting and placing tiles was a nice twist.

I played this a few times over the weekend, and enjoyed it so much that it has made its way onto my wishlist (just in time for the BGG Secret Santa!).

My friend and gaming co-conspirator Brian W. (a.k.a. sbwater, in these parts) recently purchased Lords of Waterdeep, and attended its demo session at EQ. I had the chance to play it with him later in the weekend, and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. He was initially concerned that me and my wife (who was not able to attend EQ this year) would be turned off by the D&D connection (I've never been a fan). I'll be honest, if the D&D logo was not printed on the game, I'd have never made the connection. This was an enjoyably-themed Euro, and one that I would play again without hesitation.

One of the neat new features of EQ is the opportunity to demo and play new releases from Essen. I attended the demo session for Suburbia, and WOW, what a game! I love, and I mean love, this game. The only challenge was figuring out the interacting effects once a tile was placed, but after a few turns, this became much easier. The design of Suburbia is very clean, the instructions are clear and organized, and the theme was engrossing.

Hey...makers of Suburbia...get this game out to the US soon! I want a copy! NOW!

Silverton is one of Brian's favorite railroad-themed games, and he has been wanting to teach me this game for years now. After playing the short version of this game, I can see why. I found Silverton highly appealing, the board map is attractive, the mechanics of purchasing and producing resources is easy to understand, and the stock market pricing mechanism is clever.

The only downside to Silverton is its length. With all our children under the age of 10, it's just not realistic for us to play a game in one session, nor is it practical for us to leave a game in-progress somewhere around either of our houses. Sigh.

I recently obtained a copy of the deluxe edition of Twilight Struggle, and was very curious to give this a shot. On our first night at EQ, the opportunity presented itself. I really did enjoy this game, but since it was my first play, I found the whole game to be quite daunting. Sometime during the Nixon administration the USA (aka, me) triggered Defcon 1. While I'm sure the suffering caused by a nuclear holocaust was quite tragic for the world's inhabitants, it was 12:30 am, and I was quite relieved to get to bed.

A new release by Martin Wallace, which felt like a dressed up version of Mastermind. Not my cup of tea, per se, but I think there's a chance I could get my older son (who is now 7) into this game. Then again, as my buddy pointed out, we could probably do the same with Mystery of the Abbey, and the adults would enjoy it more, too.

I tried, I really did. I could not, for the life of me, decipher the rules of this game in a way that made any sense. We gave it our best shot, but the whole thing just had no rhythm or logic to it.

Continuing with our exploration of Stefan Feld games, we gave The Speicherstadt a try. I liked it, but I don't think my fellow players did at all. In fairness, they're not much into bidding-driven games, so this was probably an uphill battle from the start.

I was told by several onlookers that this plays much better with the expansion, so I guess I'll have to investigate this some more.

My last game of EQ, and a favorite of Brian's wife Susan. This is a great game, one that we should definitely get on the table more. I was relieved to do much better this time around than on my previous play, where I think I ended up with negative VPs thanks to rampant accumulation of poverty cubes.
