Yesterday, November 9th, 2012 was the end of watch for my friend and co-worker James Davies. He was killed in the line of duty in the early morning hours while performing his duties as a Police Officer in Lakewood, Colorado.

Jim leaves behind a wife and 2 small children.
I am composing this geeklist to share with the boardgaming community a few memories and thoughts and if you feel moved to do so, I am hoping that a few of the generous folks here on BGG might be compelled to contribute to a fund that has been set up for the Davies family.

Contributions can be made via the "Davies Memorial Fund" at:

James Davies moved to the US from England.
His voice was understandably recognizeable on police radio traffic and he was a great sport when it came to the comments about his accent.

He often caught suspects off-guard as they listened closely to his speaking voice. I was amazed at his ability to talk someone into turning themself in when they had an active warrant for their arrest. It just sounded like the "proper thing to do", I guess.

Jim was an avid "Football" fan. Liverpool being his team of choice.
I don't think I was able to convince him that American Football is a superior sport to his "beautiful game".

Jim was an extremely hard worker. He worked a TON of overtime shifts to provide for his family. In fact, he was working an overtime shift on the night of his death.

Jim was a history buff.
...and not just the measly 200+ years of American history, but British history going back millenia.
I can't vouch for the accuracy of this, but I once asked Jim why the Brits "flip the bird" with 2 upturned fingers instead of just the middle one. Jim patiently and eloquently explained that British archers who had been captured by French troops would routinely have their 1st two fingers chopped off to prevent them from shooting a bow. Jim told me that by showing the 2 fingers, it was a taunt to the French, in effect saying, "I still got me fingers! How do ya like that?".
I always thought it must have been something more vulgar...

I could go on and on with stories and anecdotes about Jim, his character and his wry sense of humor.
Our department is in the midst of grieving this loss, which is compounded by the unfortunate fact that his death was an accidental case of misidentity. One of our own officers mistook him for an armed gunman at a tense "shots fired" call and Jim was hit with "friendly fire" (what a horrible term that is).
So in a sense, we lost 2 fellow officers in that event.

Please pray for the Davies family and for the healing of our department. If you have a few extra bucks, please consider contributing to the memorial fund set up for his family. (info in upper posting). Also pray for the outstanding officer who made a terrible error that night that he will have to live with forever.

I still have to work through a lot of emotions, because I want desperately to have someone (some "Bad Guy") to blame for this tragedy, but I can't. I know better than most that bad things happen. I see it every day. I just wish it wouldn't have happened to such a "good" guy.

Goodbye, Jim. I'll miss you.
