The one thing that gets my goat is when you pay a lot of money for a game, but it comes with useless inserts or, even worse, inserts that impede you from putting the game away (i.e. Mission:Red Planet, where you got to cram the cardboard spaceships under the stupid tray).

Recently, I have been suprised at some games that have it done right.

Please add to this list, because I want the makers of games to get kudos when they get it right.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Rum & Pirates yet. Its storage tray holds all the little square cardboard counters, each type in its own little compartment.

But what's even cooler is that the plastic cover is molded in just the right way as to sink deeper in the slots above the top-most counter. This really helps in determining if you have all the counters in the right slots before putting everything back in the box.

(Hmm... it's difficult to explain without actually showing the plastic covering. But trust me: It's really neat that it was done this way.)

Not only are there convenient customized wells for everything....

What really marks this in my book as one of the best inserts ever is the card well. You can't see this in the photo, but under the cards, on the left and right there are small angled inclines. So to get the cards out, just press lightly on either end of the deck, and the other end pops up in the air. You grab it, and are good to go.

BRILLIANT! Why have I never seen this in any other insert in all the hundreds of games I've played? Why does no-one else do this?

Yeah thumb-wells work too, but I prefer this, and with thumb-wells more often than not they tested it with a sealed deck and so the thumb-holes don't go all the way to the bottom, which means you have to turn the insert upside-down to get the cards in the first place zombie

Here is one that got it dead on right. The pieces all fit pretty well and the icing on the cake is the places for the PC markers is contoured to the hexagon so they fit in perfectly.

This is a nice insert too. Everything is held in place by the boards. There is no particular space for any one type of unit so there is tremendous flexibility in how you can organize this. Plus, it has plenty of room for expansions. (My insert below contains the wrecks and destruction expansion and also includes an extra set of counters (in espanol) sent to me by mistake. Still plenty of room...

(Note my custom dice! I'm very excited to play with them. Ordered from DiceShop in England.)

First ed. I fell in love with how this game looks in the box. I have not played it yet so cannot comment on the functionality of it but it looks very nicely done.
