I want to first thank the BGG staff for a wonderful CON. Last year's con was the best time I had all year and this year's con was even better! I will continue to attend this event as long as it is held and as long as I am able. I look forward to it all year and am a little sad that it is over as I type this. Still, it put me in a great mood and my wife kept finding me smiling wistfully as I stared blankly off into space today. Bravo BGG and a big GAME ON to all the players who's paths I crossed at the con. Cannot wait until next year to do it all over again.

This was my second BGG.CON. I left the Austin area around 7 AM Wednesday, driving up to Dallas with my buddy:

We arrived shortly after 10 AM and the line was coming outside the door of the hotel. Still everyone was so excited that the 40 minutes it took us to get to registration passed quickly by. Once the wonderful staff got us our badges, we headed straight to the Enterprise ball room, found a few extra gamers and set up our first game of...

Last year, I introduced Steel Driver as one of the first two games of the con. It was a hit, and Jeff and I decided to make it a CON tradition to kick off with this game. It is fairly quick, includes a ton of my favorite mechanics (speculation, auctions, route building, set collection) and scales well from 3-6 players.

This time we had 5 players. In addition to Jeff and myself we were joined by Damien (a friend of Jeff's), another David and Matt. I didn't write down many BGG handles this time around.

I won this one in a close finish between me and Jeff.

Off to the hot games room, which was already bouncing. This was mainly a scouting mission to check out the atmosphere and see who was enjoying what. We ended up playing a 5 player game of Escape that was at a table with no CD player, so we had to use the sand timer and we didn't know what we were doing. We got several important rules wrong and lost pretty horribly.

After the above Escape game, Jeff and I headed back to Enterprise, picked up several friends who were also at the con and we busted this hidden gem out. I had played it once a month or two back which made me want to get it. After explaining the game play to Jeff, he really wanted to try it out as well.

After Conquest we decided to explore the digs a bit. We checked into our rooms investigated the side rooms, eating facilities and most importantly the games library.

While there, I checked out my first game, Dragon Rampgage, which is another game I played once and quite liked.

Turns out Jeff and Damien were familiar with it as well and we agreed to give it a go. We went to a different room, Film Makers, which was a fairly good sized room with large round tables. It's position next to the cash and carry food vendors made Film Makers the unofficial cafeteria of the con but also served as an open gaming room. While we were there, the orphan meetup took place and it was fun to listen to and see that. To those orphans, my apologies from the loud Dragon Rampage group off to the side during your meetup!

Jeff played the dwarf and I the Paladin. We also had a mage (Eric) who did nothing but run as fast as he could all game. Jeff and I both went all out trying to slay the Dragon and he got a big head start on me that I was not able to able to catch him as he took home his first win of the con.

I had a copy of this in my bag and we had a few minutes to kill while waiting to make different connections with other con goers. I got 5 people interested in this little filler by Vlada and Eric pulled out a pretty big win here.

I really like this game and it fills a great spot in my collection as it is very portable and plays 3-5 very well in 20 minutes.

And two others as well: Stephen and August. Sorry that I did not get their BGG handles.

We had a pretty tight game and I am happy to report that no one had any AP issues and I think this was my fastest ever play of AOE III.

I played a econ engine/building strategy and did not colonizevery much at all.

The top 3 scores were 71-70-68, with m coming in second. Very close game! The guys were all great and I very much enjoyed my first pickup game of the con with strangers. I love BGG.CON exactly for this openness!

Still on m own, I headed to the hot games room to see if I could find a game I was interested in about to start that I could jump into. It was around 1030 by this time and the room was packed. There was an Escape table in the back corner and this one had a CD player so that the players could use the sound track. I saw that a game was about to get under way and I asked to join and was eagerly accepted to the table.

This time, we had experienced players and Learned to play Escape correctly. Also, the sound track adds a lot to the feel of the game. We won this one just in the nick of time and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

My friend Eric joined me around the time the game was over and we looked about the hot games room and managed to join in on a game of...

I was eager to learn this game and the gentleman (Chad, whom I know from open game days at my FLGS) who was at the table already had played it once and was willing to teach.

By now, it was after 11 PM and after a lengthy rules explanation, I was dubious that we would get our play finished as the hot games room closed each night at 1 AM (along with the library). We were joined by Damien and started a 4 player game, which is ideal for Tzolk'in as with fewer players you have to setup dummy players.

We ended up playing about 2/3 of a game before we had to pack it in. I had a hefty lead but am not sure I would have been able to hold on to it had we been able to finish.

Despite the incomplete play, I was glad to get this one played on the first day as I would play and teach it twice more during the con, each time to a different group.

This ended Day 1 of the con for me. I had been going since before 7 AM and I figured I could get up early the next day and get a good start to my first full day at the con.

I tend to be an early riser and found myself up before any of my friends. So, I headed to Enterprise, pitched a players wanted sign on my table and proceeded to set up Innovation while eating breakfast.

A gentleman named Chris joined me fairly quickly. He had played before and so I didn't need to teach the game. We played a fairly quick and close game with me taking my 6th achievement for the win while he was right behind me.

Innovation is fairly new to me, having played it 3 times before the con. Now that I have played it several more times, I am pretty sure it will be heading to the top my personal hot games list.

During my rules explanation, I was joined by Eric and we sat down to an adjacent table (while I kept m eye on the Eclipse players) to play...

I taught Eric Innovation and then proceeded to destroy him for 2/3 of a game. I was one achievement from winning when the light bulb went on for Eric and he almost came back to win before I finally managed my final achievement.

I asked Eric his opinion of the game and he was not impressed. I told him I hated the game after my first play and only played it again because the people I was with insisted on playing again. By my third play, I was hooked.

After the Innovation play above, I headed to the virtual flea market exchange, where I was selling about 20 games and buying 10 or so. This took about an hour. Jeff had also asked me to pick up Notre Dame and Roll Through the Ages for him via the flea and I did so. Turns out both of his copies were pimped out nicer than mine and he got them cheaper than I did as well when I bought mine retail a while ago. angry

Jeff was eager to play his new copy of Notre Dame and so we got a 5 player match going with him, myself, another friend of Jeff's named Ben (who I will later teach Tzolk'in) and

I do like Notre Dame quite a lot and my wife enjoys it as well. As such, I rarely get to play it with more than 2 or 3. This 5 player game was a treat, but also showed me that it doesn't really change the game to play with 2 or 5.

Ben won this one handily, playing a heavy gold and Notre Dame strategy, while I went heavy with carriages but bottomed out on money in the late game.

I met Tom on the first day of the con and he stopped to talk to Jeff and myself for a good 10 minutes or so, about games in general, the convention, and his new game he has coming out Nothing Personal, which I meant to get played but never found the chance. I mentioned to him that I had won his auction for Spartacus and he said it had come open in his luggage and he had to make sure all the components were there and that he would ping me in the AM to do the exchange. Tom was, not surprisingly, one of the nicest people I met at the con and very approachable. Tom followed up with me as promised and we did the exchange early (before the Flea exchange) and I had been carrying Spartacus with me all day waiting for the right time to play it.

Eric and I sat down in Enterprise, hoisted a players wanted flag and very quickly had 2 additional players: Alex and Barry.

Turns out, none of us really liked the game play. The first 2 round were ok and the arena fights were interesting, but after that it became boring and repetitive. There is a lot of luck in Spartacus and Alex was getting pounded pretty hard. It was obvious he wasn't enjoying it and I encouraged him to quit, which he eventually did. The rest of us played one more round and then cashed out as well. Still, this one is getting a lot of good buzz so I will try it once more before tossing it on the trade pile.

Worst game of the con for me though soblue

Unfortunately, my snoring was a slight bother to him, so this year, Jeff and I (the snorers) roomed together (a decision I came to regret as Jeff doesn't snore so much as jack hammers) while Dave roomed with Eric this year.

That said, Dave and I kept missing each other for the first day and a half of the con, but now we finally lined up and hit the hot games room together. Dave had played Space Cadets earlier and volunteered to teach Eric and I.

When I say teach, I mean to say, read the rules for 40 minutes while Eric and I played with the bits. devil

Still, it was all good as I was enjoying the company immensely and after a long tutorial, we got down to business and played two rounds before I declared it not for me and we jumped over to play another game of...

From there, we went to the library to see what was up next and we got lucky and scored one of the few library copies of Tzolk'in. As Eric and I had played the half game the night before, we volunteered to teach it to Dave.

We checked out our copy, headed to a quiet room and proceeded to play it 3 player. Eric won this one in a close match with Dave. I came in a distant third and really did not enjoy the game this time around.

I vowed to play it a 3rd time during the con before forming my opinion, but it didn't look good at that point.

Betrayal provided the best moment of the CON for me last year and Eric and I were eager to repeat the experience. Unfortunately, as many know, Betrayal can be a very uneven game. Along with Dave, Eric and myself, we were joined by Edward and Todd. We had all played before except Todd.

It wasn't long before the haunt started and Dave (who was stuck in the basement) was the betrayer. We already had the items it turned out we needed to defeat him and in 2 short rounds it was over.

Meh.

By now Eric was ready to exact revenge in Innovation. As stated above, he didn't exactly love his first play, but he couldn't stop thinking about the game. A sign that this could be a future favorite. We declared our intention to play Inno to the Betrayal table and Edward and Dave both bowed out to seek other games. Todd, who had not played before, volunteered to make it a 3 player, and we were happy for the company. We found a quiet side room and taught Todd the game and jumped in.

It was a 3 player slug fest with all of us in it to win it at the end. I was trying to exhaust the 10 deck as I had a very high score, but few achievement, and Eric and Todd were both climbing the achievement score. I didn't note the winner of this one (it was getting late), but I know it wasn't me. I think Todd won, who liked it a lot and I suspect he will be grabbing a copy for himself.

Beginning of Day 3! Again, I was first up among my extended group players so I wolfed down breakfast and headed to Enterprise, where I found several gentlemen starting a game of Acquire.

We had a 4 player with Felix, James, Rich and myself. I came in last by a lot, bottoming out on cash in the mid game, being way over invested in the one company that absorbed most of the others.

Near the end of the Acquire game, I was joined by Eric and afterwards, he and I trawled the room, and found Amanda reading the Troyes rules. This is a game I know well and volunteered to teach. While teaching, we were joined by Miguel and we were off on a 4 player of one of my favorite games.

This one was very close throughout with Miguel getting some nice red dice combo's while I concentrated on the Cathedral and some nice White-yellow combos. In the end the scores were

Me 47
Miguel 46
Eric 32
Amanda 29

Close one!

Dave had mentioned to me in conversation that he had never played Puerto Rico, my favorite game. I vowed to fix this and texted him that it was time. Turns out he was in his hotel room trying to get some work done (who does that?!?) and he came down to join us.

I grabbed a copy in the library and the 3 of us sat down to play, and were quickly joined by a fourth: Brian, who had played once. PR is also one of Eric's favorites, so we were all happy to be playing this great game!

I usually favor an eco engine - building purchasing strat in PR but I managed to find myself with 4 corn plantations early so I added Wharf and went shipping crazy for a neat change. Dave got Coffee and Factory along with some corn, sugar and indigo and cruised to a tight win in his first game of PR, with a big assist by Guild Hall.

Scores:
Dave 47
Me 46
Eric 38
Brian 29

Interestingly, compare this to the Troyes score from above!

Eric Dave and myself stayed together and checked out Alien Frontiers, with which Dave was familiar. Alien Frontiers has been on my wishlist for some time and I was happy to get a chance to play it before buying. Glad I did too, because I rate this game about a 6. The die roles pretty much decide your play and the decisions are mostly made for you.

I won this game and would play again, but see no need to add it to my library.

Another 3 player with Dave, Eric and myself. Peloponnes is one of Dave's favorites and he promised to teach it to me. I like auctions, civ themes, short games and also brutal games. This one delivers on all of the above and I loved Peloponnes. First must buy of the con for me.

I won this one as well 21-18-18.

Dave, Eric and I were enjoying each other's company and saw no need to split up or seek more gamers. Dave and I were both curious over this one and dragged a dubious Eric into playing it. It was ok, another one I am glad I got to check off my wishlist.

Dave 28
Me 27
Eric 18
