Hey all! Happy Thanksgiving here in the U.S. Thanksgiving is a time when we can reflect on what is important in our lives as we spend time with friends and family, feasting, watching football, and enjoying boardgames.

Whether you're American or not, what are you thankful for? What gets you up every day and makes you happy to be alive?

I'm thankful for my son, Jack. When I learned that a new Hamrick was coming into the world last March I was terrified. At the time I was working at a restaurant and had no aspirations to do anything other than play board games (which isn't a bad thing, per se) and relax.

Jack's impending arrival motivated me to go back to school and get a "real job"--I've been doing financial advising for Northwestern since May--and as of this month, his mom and I got engaged.

Tracy is another person that I'm very thankful for. She's really turned me around. I was a drunk with no real purpose and she's given me purpose in the form of a weird, beautiful son and an understanding, thoughtful companion.

Thankful when we are able to get both sons and daughters-in-law together at the same place.

The thing (well, person) I am the most thankful for is my son, Noah. He is 3 years old and I love him so much that I can barely breathe sometimes when I think about it. There is nothing in this world that could ever compare to the joy that I feel when I see his face. I've never been a particularly motivated person and I've never been one to have goals, dreams, or aspirations, but the one thing that I have always wanted out of life is to be a mother and I am so thankful that I have been blessed with that opportunity and that I've been given the chance to love another person with the intensity and the depth that I love him. He is the reason that I am alive; he is the reason I am here and I am so thankful to be his mother.

On March the 6th 2011 I was diagnosed with the Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Within a day I was completely paralyzed from my head to my toes. For 7 weeks I was on the Intensive Care on respiration and life-support, unable to move or communicate but very aware of my surroundings.

After the IC I had to stay in the hospital for another 4 week before I went to a rehabilitation centre for 5 months. After these months I could finally go home again (at that time I could walk behind a walker and could barely get upstairs).

When I got sick I had a son who was 6 months old. Because of my illness I had to miss his first bit of crawling, his first steps and a lot of other things. I lost my job and we got into some financial problems.

But I'm still very thankfull for the fact that I'm still here and that I can walk again (nut great distances, but still). I couldn't have done it all without all the support from my friends and family. So off course I'm very thankfull for the fact that they are in my life and stood with me (and still stand by me) in difficult times.

But I'm most thankfull for my son Kevin (who is 2 years now). The joy he brings me every day cannot be described. Even at 6 months old he was able to pull me through the biggest challenge I ever faced in my life. He pulled me through, because I knew I had to fight to stay in his life.

I'll spare you the pictures of me and Kevin on the Intensive Care. Instead here's a recent picture of us in Sprookjeswonderland (translated: Fairytale Wonderland) in The Netherlands. As you can see I'm standing and holding my son all by myself!
