We always play games on Thanksgiving. While the mayhem of dinner prep goes on or others watch TV, I can usually get a small group of us together to play games. We always have a great time.

What did you play this Thanksgiving?

Who did you play with?

My son and I got in a quick game of this during the morning prior to heading out to play some frisbee golf. We had a great time.

As usual, he beat me. This time it was close, with the margin only 2 points.

The theme drew in a couple of onlookers, which enjoyed us battling it out.

After dinner, my wife, 9 year old son and I played this. My wife usually ends up winning by quite a bit, but this time I edged her out by 9 points.

My son did well, but still suffers from thinking he has forever to put his cards down.

What a great game for a low-key afternoon!

For the past two years we have been hosting some of the foreign students that attend the University of Colorado. Last year we had students from Germany and Sweden. This year was a student from Bulgaria and a Chinese couple. After dinner my wife suggested a game of Apples to Apples. I was a bit apprehensive because the game has a huge cultural bias to the US. But my worry was for naught as the students enjoyed the opportunity to learn some new words and we discussed many of the cards that were not understood (one was, "what is a Fidel Castro?"). We're very thankful that they could join us as we live FAR away from our own kids (NC and Finland).

Who won doesn't matter, getting there was all the fun.

After the kids went down, my wife and I got 4 games of this in. She won 3 out of 4 and I was a sore loser, so pretty much a standard gaming night for us.

Father/Daughter versus Mother/Son in two sets of this game. My wife and I have been playing this game since college (in the Midwest, of course) and taught it to our children. My daughter and I took both sets, but the second was quite close and we were tied 9 to 9 with one round to play. Squeaked it out in the end.

Another family favorite played over desert with our other son joining us for a five player game. Each of us got to deal once, so five hands. Number one son played his cards expertly and smartly took the match with calls of "polarity bears", "heffalumps" and "meese" (plural of mouse, right?). One of our go-to games for light family fun.
