Okay folks...

I saw the movie Lincoln at the theatre and it sparked a newfound interest for me in the civil war period. The only civil war game I have played up to this point is Battle Cry by Richard Borg.

The movie prompted me to pull my copy of For the People off the shelf (been sitting there collecting dust for the past year) and give the game a whirl. It was the most complex game I have ever attempted. Spent 10 hours on a Saturday playing (muddling through and learning) the game for the first time with a fellow BGGer. Still only managed to make it through 1/2 the game, but I loved it... I'm hooked.

Started to think about other good Civil War games. I did a search for a geeklist, but I couldn't find a recent one specifically for Civil War games. So, I decided to create one.

Let me know what you think the best civil war games are out there. Feel free to add some details in regards to why you think the game you list is good. Others, like myself, will be using this list to help decide which game we want to purchase.

I have chosen not to list Battle Cry or For the People myself since I've only played each game once (not exactly an well-informed opinion). So, feel free to list either of those if you think they're good.

Thanks!

I've always liked the B&G quad games. They're simple to learn and give a good perspective on the battle terrain.

I can't even begin to describe the awesomeness of this one. It's a card game, yet it captures so many nuances of the war at a high level. It blows the mind when you play it to see it work. At the same time, you realize the system probably will not work in any other war. It's just a brilliant, brilliant design.

I rather like this one - although it is hypothetical.

If you took on For the People, you can take on this. I keep telling myself that, at least.
It is out of print, but can be purchased for about $20. Most folks I talk to say this or For the People is the best strategic-level ACW game out there.

I enjoyed the Dixie: American Civil War Card Game, specifially the Gettysburg set. It's really a Columbia block game at its core with individual leaders, specific units, a left/center/right/reserve, and the fog-of-war that comes with cards (vice blocks). It creates a nice narrative without a lot of overhead.

Of course, Columbia also has a number of ACW block games, including Gettysburg: Badges of Courage (which I have not tried).

Perhaps the most revolutionary movement mechanic for a wargame in recent memory (units occupy and move from position to position instead of hex to hex), done elegantly. A very, very good wooden block ACW game, focusing on Gettysburg.

If you want an easy Civil War game that can be played in one setting and still captures a lot of the feel, you can't go wrong here. It's from the early 1980s, but it's still in print. That's a great sign right there.

I've played a few Civil war games, and this is to me the best in terms of playability and a feeling of playing history.
