Good turnout, despite some Regulars truant (due to their Weekly Gaming Hours Budget being spent on Friday) shake

Andy tricked some of us into a "quick" (NOT! yuk ) new wargame, Cthulu failed to lure any Investigators, an Oldie-Soon-To-Be-Newie got another playtest, and the newspaper stopped in for pictures (for a possible feature article in near future!)

Plus, another late night train game, Westward Ho! this time.

Here is the ultimate tyranny: those who resist aggression are forced to imitate, and perhaps even to exceed, the brutality of the aggressor." ~ Michael Walzer, Just and Unjust Wars

An intriguing game. Part Risk, part Settlers of Catan, part Monopoly...
Started off very fun, as each of the 6 Players began to explore their corner of the board. As Andy described, the first part was akin to a CIV game. Our borders/frontiers eventually met the other Players'.

When you expand as far as you can, your military force becomes static (you can only build so much infrastructure and that infrastructure can support an exact amount of troops). So, to continue growing yo must become aggressive and capture neighboring support centers (cities/towns). I think we were all too conservative in our approach. Seems to me now that this game needs to be an aggressive bloodfest of combat and carnage. Would've been less downtime (which was a headache) and would make the game and board ebb more dynamically.

Not a bad game, it has promise, I think we just played it weird. Hence, the 3-1/2 hr play time (we thought it would be 2 hours...)

# = Total Cities
6 - AMANDA (green) the most aggressive player, suited her!
6 - STEVE H (red) 2nd most aggressive, seems to prove my theory
5 - Greg (blue) large water kept Steve away from him most of game
5 - Scott / Eric (yellow) landlocked into a narrow peninsula early
2 - Rick (purple) captured Amanda's Capitol, making her a Vassal (and incited her wrath)
1 - Andy (black) got a bit ganged up on. Plus, since he taught,he encouraged everyone's Best Moves early, which may have hurt HIM in the end!

Most of us agreed to try again, but maybe with 4, not 6?

As the soccer activity winded down, the gamers began to trickle back up to the lobby for more room. John P had promised Jeremiah he'd teach him DP.

Eric had time for a quickie or two. He also wisely suggested we invite the newspaper reporter to join us (sadly, he declined).

We always have a blast with this cool,good-looking game. We also had to indoctrinate Tall Steve and T.J. (noobs).

ERIC - Winner
T.J. - 2nd by one tile
Scott - 3rd
Steve H - 1st Out

I like this cute little fast-paced game of quick observation and quicker reflexes. There are a number of variations available, i'd like to add a few more to my collection!

16 - SCOTT i struggled early, but had a good surge late to win it
15 - Steve H kept stealing my carrot!
12 - Eric
12 - T.J.

We drew a number of spectators and it helped/complicated (depends who you ask) when they began shouting out what they saw trying to help. lol.

We ventured West this week, 5 Players staying late for one of the best games of RotW we've all played. This one was SO close! Alan didn't run away with it like he usually does. I ALMOST caught him at end. All of us finished within 2 pts of the player ahead of us, only 8 pts separating 1st & last!

69 - ALAN (green) Green was his lucky color all night. Did well out in Great Plains
67 - Scott (yellow) My scatter-shot approach = Denver area plus some key Ops Card routes all over place
65 - T.J. (grey) started in S.California and headed north (to my relief)
63 - Mike McR (blue) took the center of the map, completing the 14 pt SF-Prom-Omaha Line
61 - Steve H (red) after the MEX win Fri, was nice to put him back in his place. He worked the Great NW to little gain.

Well after the Railways of the West game finished up, Jeremiah, Steve H, and I went back to my place and busted out good ole Eclipse for some galactic mayhem. Steve was the ordinary, but not to be underestimated Terrans, Jeremiah was the falling empire of the Eridani, and I randomly drew the Descendants of Draco. Gotta love keeping the ancients alive, even if it did cost me arguably the three BEST technologies from exploration tokens. In the end the Descendants did what they do best and explored massively finding several ancients tiles in places that were not easy for anyone else to reach. After taking the galactic center and fortifying my territory it was all but over.
End totals:
Steve: 38
Jeremiah: 26
Me: 44
Next time we bust out this game, hopefully with Rise of the Ancients expansion, we need to all do random draws for our species. Makes it very interesting.
