I never, ever play Chess anymore. My favorite game is by far Twilight Imperium 3.

But if i had only one game to play, i wouldn't want to play a game that i could eventually get tired of playing, whose community might dissappear or one that i can actually manage to put on the gaming table only once every couple of months.

Chess, on the other hand, will not dissappear anytime soon and there's always a Chess club somewhere in every city to play it.

Nearly every character you can play requires a COMPLETELY different strategy from any other character. I've had the game since it first came out and I still can only play about 4 of the 16 characters effectively. The game is so richly thematic that it feels like a real place. Finally, the ruleset is so varied and deep that you can experience the game in many different ways (in my own words: treasure hunter, marauder, questing hero, bandit leader, et al). 16 characters with 3-4 approaches to the game...there's a lifetime of enjoyment here.

Catan with all the expansions and extensions.

That gives you thousands of hours of gaming and enough bits to create a load of variants.

Still tis an evil question posed by a reckless mind and a cruelty on all that contemplate it. whistle

What's worse is that for the non-gaming world this is not a hypothetical question and the answer is Monopoly. gulp

Soooooo much variety. Not only from all the various cards and special powers but from the fact that the game thrives on the player interaction: the negotiating, double-dealing, fleeting alliances-of-convenience and constant table-talk.

Yes, it's an often unpredictable and chaotic game...and that's part of what makes it so interesting to play.

I like many games but, in the end, Cosmic Encounter is the one that I couldn't live without.

You can change systems to keep it fresh, you can change partners, you will never stop learning and refining, 1 game is 5-15 minutes, and then a whole new mystery appears. 4 hours feels like 1.

I change my answer every time one of these "Which game for life?" threads appears. Right now I'm on a Dominoes kick again (it recurs periodically).

My usual answer is Backgammon. But I don't want to deal with the doubling-cube question again. Also, I'd need a game I can play solitaire. Dominoes has something of the feel of Backgammon to me, and it has a lot else going for it:

1. It's scalable for most any number of players, and there are solitaire Domino games.

2. The tiles have some weight and thickness to them, so they look and feel more substantial than cards and are good for outdoor play or anywhere.

3. Though many games have been devised for use with Dominoes, most people have an idea what you mean when you ask, "Do you want to play Dominoes?" You're almost certainly going to play the Block Game, the Draw Game, or Muggins (All Fives)--and those three all have a lot in common. It's not like asking, "Wanna play cards?"; traditional card games vary greatly. So, Dominoes can be thought of as a game; Traditional Card Games cannot.

4. Dominoes is easy to teach and good even for children. Yet there's enough thinking involved to provide plenty of challenge even for intelligent and skilled adult players.

5. The game provides good mental exercise of various kinds: counting, memorizing, deducing, etc.

I think this would be it. I like Tolkien and I have tons of cards, I would like to learn the rules better. With the thousands of cards available, the deck combos could be virtually endless. Trying different decks and strategies could provide a lot of entertainment.
