I took my youngest, Arthur (nearly 5), to Primary School today and stood at the classroom window watching him run about the playground in his woolly hat, gloves and snuggly coat. I was, at once, struck by a huge wave of nostalgia – something that happens more and more with advancing years – and those hazy memories of my own childhood; they’re a little smudged (like a Vaseline-smeared camera lens) but I can still see them. Arthur is like a time machine for me.

Game playing in the Boydell household was quite rich considering what would happen in the mid-1980s with the post-Trivial Pursuit (continuing) Hell of question-based and/or TV tie-in merchandise. We were so much more imaginative as a game-playing Nation before then! Here’s a glimpse into the wobble-screened, flashback world of the infant Tony Boydell…feel free, of course, to add your own rosy-glow remembrances.

Every Christmas time TV break would be filled with adverts for useless Ronco kitchen gadgets, vinyl LP compilations and this - usually alternating with the one for Operation - supported by footage of sickeningly delighted children

This is the one that took me ages to find on the Geek! I remembered desert, I remembered the box and board being at 90 degrees to eachother and I remember Indians. I think this was a Christmas present a couple of years before my parents divorced, so it never survived our decamping that house - lost forever in the apathy of parental acrimony and puberty.

Ah, one of those classic 3D dexterity affairs along with Operation and Buckaroo. The bedroom was littered with plastic, marbles and the scattered ephemera of these wonderfully-dynamic 10 minuters - 10 minutes was about all you could stomach before flicking the TV on

"How the flippetty heck does this work?" I would cry. I knew it was something to do with magnets (because that's what my Dad told me) but this got played more for the 'watch it swing right round'-ness rather than for any educational purposes

Arse-numbingly tedious roll and move affair that, I would bet a reasonable sum, was only EVER de-boxed to build and run the trap itself. Shit game, great central mechanism.

You cannot fail to love this one - a perfect marriage of new-fangled electronics and components you could choke to death on!

Every Christmas time TV break would be filled with adverts for foreign holidays, chocolate selection boxes and this - usually alternating with the one for Buckaroo - supported by footage of a vomit-inducing 'family that plays together'.

Never had this one myself, but the son (and only child) of a family friend did. He had every bloody toy and game you could ever want in the 1970s and delighted in owning me in every one of them. A spoilt little bastard to be sure, but one with a bloody amazing playroom!

I remember cycling down the hill to his (very large) home on my Tomahawk (baby brother of the UK's ultra-hip Chopper bike)

Ah, a TRUE classic - a special place in my heart for three particular reasons:

1) I used to play it with my Grandmother whenever we'd make the long trek from one end of the UK to the other to see her

2) The copy we have had since our marriage (1992) contains several game score sheets of my own design - marking up, for all time, the drubbings that we variously gave each-other in our early cohabiting time together.

3) I played a series of games with my wife in hospital on the day our first child, now 18, was born. We played 'best of three' and my wife won...on all counts, in fact

I remember the Christmas that I got this. In the house where I was born and circa 1973-4, I see myself going downstairs in that infant way - side-stepping deliberately from one step to the next, probably with a blanket in one hand!

Press their heads to make them kick and the goalies were on left-right swivelling sticks. There were a couple of the tiny footballs (in case you lost one) and the goals had little string nets.

I beat my Uncle (10 years my senior) 7-0 once though, with hindsight, he was probably throwing the game after a backhander from an Anglo-Italian syndicate (my dad and mum)

I remember playing this on the bedroom carpet with my little brother, so it came as a bit of a surprise when it was reprinted for 'grown-ups' a couple of years ago.

Also: Crossbows & Catapults and the epically-sized Torpedo Run. I was less excited by Downfall, Enchanted Forest and Life, which showed good taste for the future. But we had a wonderful original set of Go: The International Travel game, which I enjoyed immensely.

And we always had to play Yahtzee with my Gran. Before I was old enough to play Bridge with her, leastways.

One day, aged about 9, I found a box on top of the wardrobe with some hexes and share certificates inside. I tried reading the rules several times but couldn't get beyond the first few paragraphs. I never knew where that box went, but it seems clear to me now that I had let my chance at 1830 slip through my fingertips...

Wow! This one jumped out of the screen when I was looking for something else - cheeses I remember this one! No recollection of play, but just look at the tanks! The liddle tanks! How cool!
