Thanks to our upcoming shutdown, over Christmas break, I got the pleasure of working both days of the weekend. Which meant I missed out on sages (a local gaming club), and gaming with friends.

I did get to surprise one of my good friends with his birthday present of Crude, which we played twice Saturday night. I also got in a game of Castles of Burgundy Friday night.

Sunday I did get to play a little bit of Dungeon Defenders with my son, which has been pretty enjoyable so far.

no gaming this weekend, spent all day Saturday at work, and then on Sunday, it was in the 60's in Northern Iowa in December what unbelievable weather so I took the family out hiking/geocaching, went 5 miles in 4 hours finding 5 beautiful spots with hidden items, and something along the lines of 20 or so beautiful photos.

Played a two player game of Grand Conquest. Playing with 2 players really changes the pacing of the game and makes gameplay more chess-like. Game lasted 3 hours with lots of talking and strategic discussions along the way. Man, I really enjoy this game.

On Friday I played Leonardo da Vinci with my wife and then later King of Tokyo with my wife and son.

On Saturday, I went to an Eastern Pennsylvania Gaming Society meeting and played Alien Frontiers and then tried Terra Mystica for the first time. I was very impressed by Terra Mystica on that first play. I'm looking forward to trying it again.

After the Eastern Pennsylvania Gaming Society meeting, I came home and played two games of Stone Age with my wife and another couple.

On Sunday I played Guillotine and King of Tokyo with my family.

All in all a great weekend for gaming!

Three goes of K2, which appears to be very much our game of the moment, taking our total number of plays for this up to 5 in its first appearance in our game rotation, and probably some more to come before it retreats to the shelf. This already puts it in exalted company, and my other half has already declared that it's likely to become one of her favourite games. It helps that she seems to have the knack of winning, of course.

I have written about K2 in other Geeklists, but it's worth repeating that this is a game where you have to think as much about keeping your climbers alive as getting up the mountain, waiting for a break in the weather and perhaps risking life and limb in a dash for that extra VP. When the snow closes in it can be a really tense experience, and sometimes retreating down the mountain is the only way to keep your climber alive and your points healthy.

The risks tokens, cards, weather tiles and double sided board all seem to guarantee longevity for this game, even before breaking out the avalanche tiles and the expansion. If you don't like tension, this might not be for you, and the tension can be extreme when the space you want is already occupied, but this is a handy little game, playing fairly quickly (in two) once the relatively simple mechanics are understood, and producing that rarest of things – concern for the health of your opponent's meeples!

Quite apart from anything else, it was good to leave work behind for a bit and have an evening devoted to gaming. It's been too long...

My wife and I played D-Day Dice. I demoed it at BGG.CON and liked it well enough, though I wasn't in love with it. I wasn't sure I'd actually buy it. But, you know... I did anyway. haha It's a trend lately.

So we played the Tiger exercise in Easy mode to teach ourselves the mechanics, then Medium mode, and finished the night off with "live ammo" and played the full game. I enjoyed it more than when I demoed it, but still wasn't head over heels for it. However, my wife really enjoyed it and said she'd like to play it again, so it's a winner!!!

Four-player Star Trek Catan on Friday night. Included one player who had never played regular Settlers. Discovered that the gameplay is exactly the same except for the addition of "support" cards (characters!) that actually work quite well. I was impressed by the new player discovering in the set-up phase how to effectively piss off the other players. :-p Also, I won. So, good all around! Also I think the board is very pretty and I adore the dice; I'd like a full set of them!

I haven't played this game in probably eight years, and discovered upon opening the box that it's something of a time capsule - apparently I never threw away answer sheets. They were just all shoved in the bottom of the box, and I looked through them and tried to remember who the heck these people were that I was playing games with eight to ten years ago. Interesting!

I had a resounding lead for about half the game and then lost steam at the end and was edged out. My favorite new vocabulary word is "breastsummer" and insane movie I kind of want to see "Mother Goose A-Go-Go."

This has been a fantastic week of gaming for me, as I record my highest number of plays so far with 20!

= 5 Plays
This was played heavily last Saturday when I visited another branch of my FLGS. King of Tokyo is much highly sought after and I count myself fortunate that I have a copy!
Of the 5 games 1 was 4P while the rest was 5P. Keith and his brother Kent dominated affairs by winning 3 and 2 games respectively, all by KO except 1 game where Keith won by getting 20VP. 4 guys had a chance to play this for their first time, and it was an undisputed success!

= 3 Plays (NEW)
My first deckbuilder (acquired via Math trade) was immediately put to the test as I get to try this with Kent and Keith, who been recently investing heavily into Dominion. The first play was on Friday evening, where Kent and I played the intro scenario in the rulebook, and my defeat of the Thunderstone bearer Stramst proved to give me the winning points 42-37! Over the weekend I then managed to get 2 4P games in. The first was the Tower of Corruption scenario where Kent wisely invested in gold producing items enabling him to directly buy the higher level heroes, and he totally dominated the game with a score of 45 to Pao’s 28, Keith’s 25, and my 24. The final game on Sunday had us play the Tower of Compulsion mission, and here Keith’s defeat of Belac enabled him to overtake me and win with a score of 26 to my 24, Kent’s 14 (he had -6 VPs from Kobolds we threw at him!) and Mark’s 6.
Not a bad game at all. I want the expansions already!

= 2 Plays
Kent and Keith have the base game, but do not own 7 Wonders: Leaders and 7 Wonders: Cities. We therefore started Sunday’s gaming by having a quick game, and Kent invested heavily in Blue and Red cards and won handily 2ith 71 to my 55 and Keith’s 41, being also amazed at the higher scores the expansions can bring to the game.
Earlier in the week Julie and I also introduce Cities to Vangie. It was tight game and I win 62 to Julie’s 59 and Vangie’s 56.

= 2 Plays
I beat Kent and Keith in a very tightly contested game 10 to their scores of 8 each. I also teach Kirk this last Friday and he managed to beat 11-9, although we mistakenly end the game on the 7th landed colony instead of 8.

= 1 Play (NEW)
I had my first ever try of the Dominion system last weekend, as we had a game of this with Kent, Keith, and Mark right before the Thunderstone advance game on Sunday. The kingdom cards were a hodgepodge from the base game, Dominion: Intrigue, and Dominion: Prosperity, and it was characterized by lots of curses and Militia screwage. Kent won with 31 to Marks’ 24, Keith’s 18 and my 15. The gameplay was very quick and it is simpler and plays faster than Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin. Both are good games and do scratch different itches methinks.

= 1 Play
I was so happy to also FINALLY get this out again! I teach Kent and Keith this, and in this game Kent managed to capture the Galactic Center, BUT left a path for me towards his homeworld and I captilize on this as my cruisers defeat his Starbases and ships and breakthrough, nuking and taking over his worlds in the process. Keith built a large invasion force and then invaded Kent in the Galactic Center, but Improved Hulls reign supreme over Plasma Cannons as Kent’s forces destroy Keith’s. In the end I win with a score of 28 versus Kent’s 19 and Keith’s 11 (Keith had poor draws as a lot of hexes around his homeworld were devoid of discovery tiles!).
The important thing is that they both liked the game so I am sure I can get to play Eclipse again!

= 1 Play
Got in a Gladiator cup game with my Lizardmen against Delinquente’s Dwarfs on Friday. It was a funky attacker (me) versus defender scenario with weather effects, and I had to totally destroy his forces to be able to get a large score. Needless to say Dwarfs are tough little guys and while a lot of his warmachines were pincushioned by skink darts and I manage to run over 1 large block of warriors, the rest survived. I still win though with a Glad cup score of 12-5.

Other games played during the week.

= 2 Plays
Got to play this with the gals again at my FLGS. The first game had us use the E deck, and it was very tight and low scoring as Vangie won 15 to me and Julie’s 11. In the second game I introduce Agricola: Farmers of the Moor to Julie, and this time I maximized the presence of the woods and peat with the cards and I finally manage to win after quite some time, with a score of 45 to Vangie’s 38 and Julie’s 23!

= 1 Play
3P game with the gals again. We used the Trading House, Library, and Cloister buildings from the Puerto Rico: Expansion I – New Buildings, and Vangie won 44 to Julie’s 41 and my 38 in a balanced and closely fought game!

= 1 Play
Had a 2P with my son Sherwin (17 yrs old) while waiting for my wife to finish her work. We decided to have a shorter game by playing only until a score of 12, and my Alien Robots and Sherwin’s Dinozombies were neck and neck at 11 points when I did a cheesy move and played an Alien Invader which gave me the 1 VP for the win! I think I shall refrain from using Aliens versus Sherwin again in the future if I want to get a game of this with him again!

= 1 Play
The previous week’s abbreviated game was a bummer so Janine and Julie again join me in a 3P game. The gals prove that they are really used to the game as the gameplay was fast and furious and they totally dominate. Janine and Julie end up tied at 199 versus my 166, but Janine has 7 empty spaces to Julie’s 8, so Janine wins the tiebreak!

I love this game. I keep going back to a comment the designer made in an interview I read. He noted that someone commented that the game was "challenging and relaxing". I think that's the best way to describe it.

Our copy is signed and I wanted to protect it, so I picked up some card sleeves this weekend. I'd never sleeved anything before! I put them in the sleeves and the tops were a bit too tall to allow the cards to fit back in the box. So I guillotined the sleeves for all 92 cards. That's how much I like the game. haha We played twice I beleive it was.

With the gamegroup:

Kicked off the session with a nice 3 player game of City of Horror with a big win. We followed on the zombie theme with a 3 player game of Zombie in my Pocket for a win. Then 2 unfinished games, first one was a 6 player game of FrankenDie, where a few folks wanted to stop so we did. We then tried to play a 5 player game of Montana which went 10 of 16 rounds.

I also tried a solo Glory to Rome to go over the rules, nice game, I'll show that one soon to the gamegroup. I also played a level 3 Friday for a win.

It was a pretty good weekend for games. I recently bought small world underground and the Dominion base set. I played dominion and small world underground on saturday night with my brother and a close cousin. They are my main gaming peoples and they both enjoyed the games. Although i might have started something scary introducing my cousin to Dominion.

Also i taught my dad how to play YINSH. He used to play chess a lot and he will play most abstracts. Well i figured i would take it easy on him and i wasn't paying attention to his moves that much and before i knew it he had five in a row and i couldn't stop it. Then he got his next five in a row pretty quickly after that. So i was really trying after that first one he got! i ended up accidentally giving him his last 5 in a row. so i got whooped in a game i thought i'd have to take it easy on.

Only one game of Wyatt Earp with Stacey who was home again for part of the weekend. Soooooo,....
the bad news: only one game,
the good news: Stacey worked out a deal with me again wherein I buy her some dvds she really wants (a TV series) and she pays me back hour for hour of what is one her dvds in game play, but that is not all, she will be learning games that she has not yet learned. Which means when she likes one I get even more game play out of the deal. It also means that all my lovely Christmas games coming up can actually get played during the holidays! It is a win-win situation because she is pumped at getting her dvds.

Started off the weekend with some Enochian Chess on Friday evening. Three out of four players were new to the game, so it wasn't terribly serious, but we had a good time.

Otherwise, besides a couple of games of SET, it was a very Pyramidal weekend:

Saturday saw Pharaoh x3, Tic Tac Doh!, and IceSickle, played at various locations around town in the course of errands, moviegoing, and shopping.

Sunday had four full games of Zark City with the same three players, getting progressively more vicious as people settled into the game. Splendid fun.

Friday night, 2 buddies came over to my house and I hosted a small game night. We played a 3er of Goa which came down to a 2 point tile I purchased in the last round. Top two scores were 44-42. I won't post the other player's score out of sympathy for that player.

Afterwards, we played a game of Innovation and I got destroyed.

Saturday, I headed into Austin to play at my FLGS, Great Hall Games where I played:

We started with a 5er of Sneaks & Snitches and I came in 4th. I am pretty sure I have only ever won this one once, when I first learned it 2.5 years ago.

Dungeon Lords This was a 4er and was very close throughout, except for one player (a friend I play with regularly) who lost an entire turn due to poor planning (no gold and played on spots that required gold on some spots, which he ended up on). I thought we might see a table flip, but he took a moment from the table to calm down. I did win this one with 32, but it was close. The Trophy Room really won it for me.

Next up was Hansa Teutonica. It was a learning game for all of us. I acquired this one last month and had not gotten it played yet. I have heard a lot of good things, but I wasn't wowed by this one. I typically tend to dislike games with an action point mechanic. Something about taking X actions per turn ends up feeling very route and mechnical to me. Still, there were a ton of interesting decisions and I suspect I will like Hansa T more with repeated plays.

After getting home, I was joined by a buddy whos daughter is the same age as mine. We were getting together mostly for the girls, but decided to play some games while hanging out. We broke out Roma which neither of us have played but both own as a result of it being a free game at BGG.CON last month. He smoked me in both games. I don't know what to think about this one. It seemed kind of dull, but I will give it a few more goes before consigning it to the trade pile.

When my wife got home, the three of us played a 3er of Dominion which featured Bishop and Monument as well as Platinums and Colonies. The key card in the kingdom spread was Tactician and combines with Platinums, the game saw several 20+ buying power rounds with multiple buys. The scores were 79-92-96 with me coming in last. My friend won this close one and my wife was second.

This wrapped up a great weekend of gaming for me:

Goa x 1 W
Innovation x 1 L
Sneaks & Snitches x 1 L
Dungeon Lords x 1 W
Hansa Teutonica x 1 L (2nd)
Roma x 2 L,L
Dominion x 1 L

I played a 100-point game with my nephew on Saturday. I warned him a couple of times but he still managed to fly Darth Vader off the edge of the map. Oh well, I guess he won't make that mistake again. shake
Other than that, it was a close game!

First time played. What nail-biting adventure?! There were 4 inexperienced crew-members and a captain who's played solo his first few plays. We fumbled through 2 levels successfully and destroyed our foes.... wow. I'd play it again, as I enjoyed the feeling of possibly being obliterated because of wrong decisions and not necessarily my own.

Then I proceeded to teach Endeavor to a couple of Noobs. It was a shallow victory for me, but I was happy to teach the game.

Friday night CABS meeting this week with a great food truck, Mikey's Late Night Slice. Excellent pizza by the slice. I'd had a request to teach Sentinels of the Multiverse during the week, so this was the first game I got set up. Four player game with two newbies and one with just one game of experience. We had a fairly easy time with Baron Blade, until his Backlash Field came out. That slowed us down in a hurry. In the end, the police force of Megalopilis helped us to vanquish the Baron.

Next up was Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game. Back to back superhero co-op games makes for interesting comparisons. Very little of which are in favor of the not-so Legendary game. Difficult setup (the dividers don't tell you what's been divided, doh!), lackluster play, repetitive art, no sense of tension during the game. I won't say it's awful, but it's not very interesting either. I'd play again, but only with a different scheme that makes the game more difficult, and therefore possibly more interesting.

1st & Goal has been popular at CABS, due to the league we're running. I needed to get in a league game, so that was up next. My poor Scranton Scorchers just don't like to play on the road. A blocked field goal and two turnovers in the red zone (one in the end zone and one at the 3 yard line) doomed my Scorchers to a 10 - 0 loss at Columbus. It was only that close because Columbus couldn't hold on to the ball themselves.

I finished the evening with something light, Trajan. I like most Feld games, but I'm not sure on this one. Just two plays in and it really has me confused as to if there is any real strategy to the game. I'm certain that I'm a big part of the problem, since I can't manipulate my mancala to always take the action I want. I spend one out of every two turns setting up, so I can take the action I want to take. I'm intrigued by the game, but also frustrated by it. It may end up being one of those games you have to play constantly to be any good at, and I'm not sure I enjoy it enough to play it week in and week out.
