What is a Geek Chat League?:

A Geek Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

What is a Thank You, Secret Santa of the Gelato GCL Geeklist?:

This year, a small but highly motivated group of members of the Gelato GCL have created their own little Secret Santa event. This is a geeklist where these members of the Gelato GCL have an opportunity to thank their Secret Santa and celebrate the cohesiveness, generosity and enthusiasm of the participants in the group.

If you are a member of the Gelato GCL and received your Gelato Secret Santa present(s), you are encouraged to add your new games to this list and to post about your reactions and reflections. All others please refer to other thank you geeklists on the site.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Ho ho ho!

A large box arrived today, and since it was my birthday, I decided to open it!

Inside were three wonderful games!

Valor & Victory, the captain's edition from Print & Play Productions with what looks like all of the nationalities! I've been waiting to try that one for a long time.

Also inside was Astra Titanus, something I've had my eye on ever since Marco featured it in one of his video reviews.

Last but certainly not least, the ATO annual from two years ago, Four Roads to Moscow!

I had to include my cat in the photo.

Thank you Santa Gelato! Grazie!

Gelato Santa was not done with me. Today I went to Starlit Citadel as instructed to pick up the other items. They had thoughtfully gift wrapped them, so I have this little stack sitting under the tree waiting for tomorrow morning!

Edit: Well Christmas has arrived, and with it the unwrapping of the Gelato gifts.

Wow! wowsurprise

Thank you Santa Gelato!

PS: The stocking stuffer was a Batman Heroclix figure.

My package got here a couple days ago. We tried stashing the goodies underneath the tree but we're out of room (we stock our tree with the gifts we are getting others to make it seem less bare). Cati insisted we open the packages then and there...

A short update and I'm still stacked with family business--

Inside our wonderful packages Cati and I found two games, Nothing Gained But Glory and Kingdom Builder which were quickly unwrapped, sorted, bagged, and put on the shelf. Oh, how nice it is to see another wargame on the shelf after the most recent purge! (esp. one in a period that I'm not familiar with). We played Kingdom Builder that night, twice. Cati and I loved it. It fills a nice niche--it's short, interesting, and plays wonderfully with two to four players. Over the next few days, before we left Texas, the game got a lot of play. I even bought to app and played it a ton on the plane.

I also started on the rules for NGbG, and hopefully I'll get in a match or two with Marco when I get to Bloomington (I owe you a PM!). Regardless, I'll have time to explore this when I get back to Texas. Woohooo Secret Santa!!!!!

oh oh oh, yesterday a box from CoolStuff and a priority box from a secret private address were delivered by the mail elf on my doorstep. In a moment of superhuman self-control I was able to force myself to bring the boxes to my wife and ask her to gift wrap the contents for me. She reported that one of the games was even wrapped already! Still, I did not look. not even peeked. Can't believe it myself, and yet.
IF my incredible resolve lasts, I'll open the games on Christmas Eve, or Christmas morning. Usually we unwrap the gifts on the eve, but this year we may move that to the morning so that Amelia does not get too hyper at night and keeps us all up until 5am. Either way, I'll report here about the gifts. Thank you, Secret Santa of the Gelato GCL!!!

OMG...

I got this HUGE box today in the mail (at the SAME TIME as my "Secret Santa Grogs" box!)..

And... Well hey I know that box!!! It's the one I have sent to my "Secret Santa Grogs" target! Wow.

So it seems that my said target was able to repay me the favour. And what an incredible haul of games this seem to be!!! Of course most of it is under wraps, so I'll wait until X-Mas to open them up... whistle

But two were not wrapped, including the sequel I was missing for the classical "Invasion of the Air Eaters" game (this one was a Secret Santa gift of last year!), and the much-wanted "Stargate!"

Notice the GREAT drawing that a member of Gelato Santa's family made for me: it is now in the place of Honour on my fridge.

But wait, there is MORE!

I also got two amazing books in a second package: exactly of the kind of read I love.

I am not worthy!!! modest

this morning the time to open the gifts finally came, yay!! The first I opened was Star Trek: The Adventure Game, perfect for someone like me - a fan of the original series who happens to play most of his games in solitaire. The map is a beauty!

Next, Struggle for the Galactic Empire, a solitaire game that seems to be quite popular among Gelato Secret Santas. Expand and fight, fight and expand: what's not to love?

Last but not least, DC Comics Deck-Building Game, perfect to fuel my passion for superheroes and further my attempt to find The Perfect Superhero Game. Is this going to be the one? Thanks to my Secret Santa now I can find out!

And then, surprise surprise, it turns out this year I also had a Secret Elf, or in other words another member of the GCL who sent me gifts. These were a mechanical puzzle (how did the Elf know I am a fan of such things?) and a beautifully printed copy of The Dungeon of D, which has been on my radar for a while but I doubt I would have ever had the strength to assemble by myself.

Thank you bunchs, my Secret Santa and Secret Elf! I will enjoy your gifts greatly in the next weeks or months, and will a film video review for each!
