Those of you who listen to Board Game Geek are probably familiar with the tragic ending of Aldie's McMulti board. One of my games came to its own tragic ending today. This list is dedicated to those dearly departed games, destroyed by flood, fire, or other acts of god or, in my case, a water balloon. Feel free to add your own sad story.

In retrospect, bringing a board game to a company picnic that includes a water balloon fight was a bad idea, I see that now. In my defense, we were set up on a table in the picnic area a good hundred feet away from the zone of fire. At the table next to us, four people were playing a game of spades. Suddenly the firefight spread into our area and, BLAM, my Ticket to Ride board and cards were soaked. I was rather pissed. I'm buying a new one and asking to be reimbursed; we'll see if I get any sympathy from my employer.

My copy of The Creature that Ate Sheboygan is at the bottom of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I was 11 or 12 when it ended up there. I'm still broken up over it.

I sing now a song of pity for Howie. Howie was an old library-style computer terminal I found sitting all alone under a tree in Ann Arbor back in the summer of 1996. He looked so cute and sad that I picked him up and put him in the back seat of my car, where he rode with me to and from work in Lansing, and to and from my fiancee's place in Utica, for months and months without incident.

Cut to March of 1997, the weekend before our wedding. After a late night planning the last details of the event with friends, we retired to a local Chinese restaraunt around 11pm. After sitting for about five minutes, a couple of kids came in and said that my car had been broken into, and the whole dozen people in our group streamed outside to discover that not only had some interloper broken the window of my car and made off with Howie, but they'd snarfled my nascent Legends of the Five Rings collection (now dwarfed by my current one, which is sadly long-ignored), and my copies of Chaos Game (never played!) and Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix, neither of which I've ever gotten a chance to replace.

Of course, I ended up laughing my guts out, because I realized somebody had just commited what may have been a felony under the misapprehension that a 20 year-old dumb terminal was a saleable commodity; I'm confident the games were just along for the ride on this heist. In any case, the wedding went off without a hitch, and many games were played at the all-hors d'ourves reception, but I'll always remember the ones that weren't there to be played.

A couple of years ago I lent this game to my roomie because he had some friends over and they were bored and they wanted to stay up late and I have such wonderful games. Well, wonderful me, I said,"sure, I'll lend you guillotine if you promise to take good care of it." Sure enough, I come into the kitchen the next morning and find my cards all over the table. Normally this would not bother me but did notice a distinct odor. Upon futher investigation, I found that his cat had relieved herself on them, which in turn led to his girlfriend's cat and my other roomie's cat also doing the same. It still makes me sad.

BTW: A moist towel and six months with a couple drier sheets in the box seemed to fix the problem though I haven't really played it since....

As grey traces of dawn tinge the eastern sky, the three travellers, men of Willowdale, emerge from the forest's shadow. Fording the river, they turn south, journeying into the dark and forbidding lands of The Necromancer...

The game group that I was part of back in the late '80s and early '90s really enjoyed Shattered States and my copy got LOTS of table time over a brief period. Unforutnately, my copy also ended up scattered all over I-75 northbound between Cincinnati and Dayton, OH. My fumble-fingered friend (one that was not familiar with the rules to the game) had opened the box and was rummaging through it in the back seat of my car as we traveled to meet up with a group of friends that lived outside of Dayton. Suddenly, the box became unbalanced in his hand and began to tip. In his effort to save the box from spilling all over the floor boards he over-compensated and sent (almost) the entire contents flying out the open rear window and onto the highway where the rubber bands holding the cards, the ziplocs holding the counters, and the box hoding the game all experienced structural integrity failure due to high speed impact with the road surface and other vehicles. It all proceeded to explode into a cloud of pretty cardboard confetti tossed about by 70 MPH breezes. All I came away with was the box lid and a couple of cards that fell to the floor. The game never got replaced.
