On June 12th, I placed my first real board game order. It's now December 27th, and I'm at $3301.18 spent, with one more order ready to be placed before the year's over. This is my story.

Ok, now that I've completed my one videogame reference (props to whoever got that), this really is the story of what I've bought, where I've bought it, whether I kept or got rid of it, and just overall how each game or purchase has contributed to my journey.

For the longest time, the only game I enjoyed playing as a child was Risk 2210 A.D. I had always been bored with regular risk and any other board game for that matter, so when one year my mother bought this for the family, I quite enjoyed the Ameritrashiness of the game. To that end I still do. My only real complaint was the time it took to enjoy a great game. Well that and the times the dice seeemed to hate me.

But then as with many others, my journey began with Settlers of Catan. I first played this game 5 years ago, and it became second board game I liked, and hands down my favorite. I played this again and again both with the actual board game and on asobrains. It was a great game, and still is, and while it doesn't compare to the games I play now, it will still always remain in my collection and always have a special place in my board game shaped heart.

Again as with many others, Carcassonne was another first step in my journey. 2 years after Settlers, my brother brought home this game and while I still preferred Catan, this became the third board game that I liked.

2 years ago I got married and moved to Cleveland. And I finally played cities and knights with my brother in law. He knew I loved Settlers and he had the expansions so whenever he was in town, he'd come by and we'd play the game with all 3 of the expansions.

And here's where the journey started to accelerate. Around 7 or 8 months ago, my brother in law borrowed Stone Age from a friend to bring in with him. We then played 3 games the first night and I was hooked. I loved the game, loved the mechanics (my first worker placement), and just overall loved the game. I vowed to buy it sometime soon. I didn't, but I eventually did acquire via trade.

A month after Stone Age, my brother in law then borrowed Smallworld to bring in. Once again, my wife and I loved it. Great artwork, great fun, and a fairly balanced game (except of course for flying sorcerers). This is when my brain first flipped. After years of Carcassonne and Catan I thought they were the only good board games out there. Stone Age proved me wrong, but it was only after Smallworld that I started to realize...wait a second...there are actually other good board games out there!

I was going back to Toronto to my family in 3 days, so I bought Smallworld on Amazon with prime shipping, and headed to Toronto where the family loved it. When I got back I started my first batch of outrageous spending.

Now here's where things get interesting. I started looking around, doing some research, and bit by bit I found tens, then hundreds of board games that I wanted. I was addicted, and I had barely even stepped foot in the water. But how could I justify spending this much on board games (don't worry, as time went on I got better and better at answering that question with worse and worse reasons)? Well we had recently won a new PS3 at a local auction, and since I'm a computer game guy, we decided to sell it on Ebay and use the money to buy board games.
After it sold for nearly $300, I had the seed money to start spending, so I made 3 batches of purchases. The first was at CSI on June 12th, where I got:

7 Wonders, Flash Point, The Resistance, and all the small world expansion. The good news is that all of these have stood the test of time so far.

My last purchase (each of these 3 purchases were around the $100 mark) was a bunch of stuff from assorted ebay sellers.

I got my hands on Civilization, Pandemic + Expansion, Notre Dame, Deadwood, Perry Rhodan, Lost Cities, Jambo, Dixit + Expansion, Giants, Shadows Over Camelot, Sentinels of the Multiverse, and Settlers: Candamir. Most have stuck around, but I traded Deadwood, Perry Rhodan, and Candamir. And yes, all that was just over $100. Half from some guy who was practically giving them away.

A few weeks later and dozens of board games played, the itch was getting worse, not better. So I looked around and found a retailer named One Eyed Jacque who sells ding and dents (I've since spent over $1500 there). I wanted to place another order but I had to justify it first. Thus began a month long purge of useless trash I owned on ebay. This was actually pretty awesome as I walked away with over $700 in spending money by the end of the month, and all for garbage I wasn't using. SO I went back to One Eyed Jacque and bought the following.

Agricola, Le Havre, Arkham Horror, Dominion, Mission Red Planet, Quarriors, Fresco, Castles of Burgundy, Wiz War and Ticket to Ride. I'm sure I'm forgetting some other stuff I got in that first purchase from him but whatever. Most of those have stuck around as some of our favorite games but Wiz War and Fresco have both been traded away. Although now that I'm writing this I kinda have the itch to play those again....

No I don't like this game. I bought it because the manufacturer had a sale where they sold the 2 pack of Allied and Russian for $10. So I wanted one to try. Then I saw the shipping made it $30 instead. So I did what any reasonable addicted BGG's would do and I bought 20 sets since then the shipping was only $1.50 per set. Over the next 6 months, I've traded away half for games (some insanely awesome trades in there too), and sold the other half on ebay, which more than paid for them all and then some.

The games I've acquired in trade for these are the following;
LoTR LCG, Battlestar Galactica, Thunderstone + expansion, Arimaa, El Capitan, Quarto, Quoridor, Carcassone + expansion, Chocolate-opoly (for the wife), and the best of them: War of the Ring first edition + Battles of the Third Age.

I'm now down to 2 Panzer Allied's left.

And now the trades. It was right about ,mid July when I first started trading and a new addiction was born. In my first main batch of trading (I've had 2 major trading bouts), I acquired the following games which I still own and love today.

Jaipur, At The Gates of Loyang, Stone Age, Hive, Roll Through the Ages, Ora Et Labora, Domaine, Innovation, Glory To Rome, Galaxy Trucker, 51st State, Multiple Dominion Expansions, Arkadia, Aton, Citadels, The Hanging Gardens, Through the Ages, Alhambra, and Thurn and Taxis.

I got a bunch more as well, but those have since been traded again.

I then took a break from acquiring for a bit...maybe 2 months or so. Then I was tempted by a bunch of new stuff OEJ had in stock, so I bought another batch to hold me over till I went absolutely nuts a few months ago. Here's what I got:

Kingsburg, Nightfall, Super Dungeon Explore, Core Worlds, Discworld, Dungeon Petz, Eminent Domain, Four Taverns, Gosu, Lords of Waterdeep, Merchants and Marauders, Quarriors Quarmageddon, Puerto Rico, Tunderstone Advance

Most of those I still have and love, but Puerto Rico and Super Dungeon Explore were huge disappointments that got traded away. I also acquired the following as trading fodder, since they were $15 each.

Ventura x 2, Show Manager x 2, 011 x 1, Ristorante Italia x 2,

And now I have items in my cart, waiting for my last purchase of the year. Not sure what will make it, but I already have over $50, and I should have more than enough to make the $100 minimum. The year has been an absolute blast, my addictions have run rampant, and I hope for a little more restraint next year. Maybe.

As it stands now, I've spent $3,301.18 on my collection, and basing that collection off of CSI's prices, my collection is worth $6,100.94 which is pretty awesome. Happy holidays everyone, and thanks for reading!!
