A bit of cheat here to start of the list. I met my girlfriend through internet dating and we met on Hogmanay (December 31st. That's close enough for me to include it on the list.

Lorna is not a gamer in any shape or form but understands that my hobby is important to me and encourages me to spend time with friends engaging in it. She truly is supportive loving and giving.

She's willing to give games a go but Iv'e never sat down and played anything other than traditional card or trivia games with her, because that's her fancy. Euro and Ameritrash don't interest her and I respect that.

I've been meeting on a regular basis on Tuesday evenings with like minded geeks at the pub to play board game. We are a small group but dependable group and we are open minded to give most games a go., This group and meets have sculpted and directed my choice in purchases. I want more games that fall in to the under two hours and easy to teach.

This has been the first true year of this group meeting for the main purpose of board games. (It stems from a group of Magic players who used to meet on Tuesdays to play.)

If you are looking for gaming in Aberdeen please get in touch with me and I can introduce to a great group. Soem of whom are old friends of mine and others new thaty I would have not met except through the Geek and this group.

This game gets a notable mention as around February or March. I got my copy thanks in no small part to Watch it Played and the delightful Rodney Smith and Smith family. Watch it played has helped shaped my decisions on several games I recommend the series.

It's seen lots of play and is possibly tied with one other game t for number of plays this year. I did start recording plays at the beginning of year but got lax so I can't give hard numbers. It has been an evergreen favourite. A great kicking off or finishing game for the Tuesday meets thanks to it's generous player allowance and short play time.

March, and I leave my what was my current job and sign up to take on a completely new role. Since leaving University I have worked sales and marketing ranging from tabletop miniatures to marine safety equipment.

Now I have started in a new profession as an inspection engineer. This was a big step for me as the job is primarily offshore taking me away from the 9-5 and using entirely different skills and learning a profession from scratch. March this year marks the beginning of this adventure.

2012 marks the beginning of my Kickstarting. I've backed three projects this year:

Among the Stars
Fleet
Solforge

I don't think I will become a serial backer but I enjoy the sneak peek for the year ahead and the ability to get bennies for pre-ordering. I would have backed Sentinels of the Multiverse Shattered Timeline but the shipping was a killer for me at the end of the year. I encourage the American publishers to include group shipments for your overseas fans. We want to back your game but it's a hard ask to pay the equivalent of twice the cost of your game to do so.

Cameron I met through my girlfriend. He likes games that make him think. Quick and simple games but not afraid to take on a challenge. Cameron is quick to pick up new games and I've found after a game or two he is teaching and encouraging everyone else to play.

Cameron was also 4 when I met him. Lorna's wee lad is a budding gamer. He likes Hungry Hungry Hippos but but he is truly delighted when he figures somethin out on a more complicated game. Like how to eliminate other players in Hey That's My Fish!.

In the last year the games I've played with him include:

Top Trumps
Pit
Hey That's My Fish
Minotaurus
Checkers
Carcassone
Tsuro
Flashpoint: Fire Rescue
Hungry Hungry Hippos
Moshi Monster Guess Who
Yahtzee

I've found playing games with me has made me a better teacher and appreciate more how people learn games both through explanation and doing. He is quick and while I sometime s need to prompt that lessens every play.

It's been a joy to play with some one so completely different than my usual peers and enjoy the shared experience of teaching and learning.

This boy is quick to learn as well. Usually it takes only two games before he is bothering his Mum or grandparents to play teaching THEM the rules.

As an aside his current favourite is Flashpoint: Fire Rescue. We're slowly ramping up all the rules but he took to family game just fine.

In May I went to sea. This was my first time working offshore. It was a culture shock but I adapted quickly. I also got sea sick, forutnately I adapted quickly to this too.

I had treated myself to an Ipad on starting this new job and I've therefore never been far from getting in a game even if it is with the AI.

It wasn't until November that I packed a physical board game with me and I'm now encouraged to do so again. The game was Sentinels of the Multiverse which was an excellent way to while away weather days and after shift hours. I suspect next tip I will pack Lord of the Rings LCG and start looking in to portable solo games.

Another notable game for it's play time. I have a love of thematic games and this year I pushed to get more of them. My top three this year being:

King of Tokyo
Sentinels of the Multiverse
Blood Bowl Team Manager

King of Tokyo is another fantastic filler game that keeps seeing the table as it plays quickly and scales players very well. I've come to admire the role the filler game has in my collection and I'm now always on the look out for another.

July and August I got away on two vacations. A short stasy in Glasgow to watch the Olympic footballl as a treat for Lorna and a great way to get Cameron involved in the Olympics.

The second was a weeks holiday in Tuscany to attends a family wedding on Lorna's side. We had a big group in the villa and while most of our nights were busy with family feasts, weddings and the obligatory stag night I managed to fit in gaming with Cameron and his cousins.

In September I attended my first Judges convention. I qualified in the last year and I enjoy giving back to a game that has given so many good times.

I learnt loads at the event and had a chance to spend a weekend immersed with other gamers working to make our own little niche stronger while having fun and cracking out a few games of Magic and other games.

Spending time with volunteers is great and I'm glad to be a part of the community for this and other games.

Through the club in Aberdeen and my judging I'm doing my small part in helping promote the hobby. I'm limited to what commitments I can make due to my work as it can call me up with a few days notice and I never know exactly when I'll be back. I still want to keep promoting the hobby as it's been a great part of my life for the best part of it.

So we come to Christmas.

In addition to getting a handful of games from wish lists I've taken the opportunity to have friends round to try them out and catch up.

The best part of my Christmas though was to witness my brother Nicol's proposal to his long time girlfriend. I'm a softy and I did have a tear in my eye. It was magical and he shared it with all of us.

So looking ahead.
2012 was a great year and I want to make plans for 2013.

I intend to be more active on Boardgame Geek and this geek list is just the start. I'm working on my first review and I'm tracking my plays once more.

I want to grow both my collection and hit 100 games this year and also grow the board gamers meeting in Aberdeen. We have a group on Tuesday but also we have a function room most Sunday afternoons. I want both to fill.

Personally I will quit smoking. I enjoy it(, no point in lying to myself), but I know the damage it does. I'm also looking ahead to settling down. Lorna and I are going strong and I now have a job that doesn't limit where I live. This year is planning for the life I want to build with her and working on how to make that a reality.

Finally for work I have my course at the start of the year to qualify. It's going to be busy year with a steep learning curve.

So fellow geeks how was your year? What are your goals for the next twelve months?
