The last few months I've been looking at all the unplayed games in my collection and thinking that I really need to make more of an effort to get them played. So I decided to create this geeklist to help focus my gaming over the next year, and to encourage me to seek out opportunities to play the games I really want to play.

Boiled down, these are my general gaming goals for 2013:

Play more games - obviously.
Play more 2-player games with my wife - 2012 was an eventful year - we got married and then bought a new house. We didn't play as many 2 player games this year as we did the previous year. I'd like to turn that around in 2013.
Play good games / my favorite games more often - As will become apparent below, I tend to like heavy and long games, which can be tough to round up players for on an average game night. I want to put a special emphasis on getting my favorites to the table more often.
Play my unplayed games - I'd like to put a significant dent in the "Owned and Unplayed" category of my collection
Play more war-games - 2012 was sadly lacking in the wargame department. Until November I hadn't logged any wargame plays. Fortunately, things are already looking up for 2013, but I want to emphasize this more.
Purge - While I have plenty of storage space thanks to my new shelves, there are a number of games in my collection that I no longer have much interest in playing, and they might as well move on to new owners.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. I've only included games that I own, but there are many games that I want to play that aren't in my collection, too. I've posted some goals that should be relatively easy to meet, and others that will definitely be a stretch. I will try to keep this list updated as I meet these goals, and I may add new goals over the year.

My wife has posted her own list of goals here: Xilan's 2013 Gaming Goals.

A few years ago when Derk lived nearby I managed to get some regular 18xx plays in, but in 2012 my only play was a recent time-limited game of 2038, which is among my least favorite of the genre. I only own one 18XX title, but there are plenty of opportunities to play others if I pursue them.

GOAL: 3 plays

I think this will be fairly easy to achieve if I focus on it. There is an annual 18XX convention held nearby every year, so that would be one way to get in some plays.

I played the old Netrunner game about 10-12 years ago at a friend's house. I thought it was a lot of fun, but by that time it was already out of print. I was hesitant to get into the new version simply because I wasn't sure I would have much opportunity to play it. After giving it a try at BGG.con, I decided it had to be mine anyway.

GOAL: 20 plays
Achieved: 12/5/13

This goal is fairly ambitious, but if I find a regular opponent or two it should be easy to meet. Games are quick, and the typical practice with a game like this is to play multiple games back to back, so the plays should come in bunches.

I could probably meet this goal easily if I got involved in the tournament scene, but I don't have any interest in that.

This game was not even on my radar when I went to BGG.con, but I heard a few good comments, read up on it while I was there, and placed an order as soon as I got home. I've managed to play it once so far and really enjoyed it.

GOAL: 3 plays

I rate this goal as moderately difficult to meet. The explanation for this game is fairly lengthy, and I'd much prefer to play the long game, so it might be hard to get to the table.

I purchased this game when it was released, stickered the blocks and read the rules as soon as it arrived, and it has sat on the shelf ever since. Based on reviews and user comments that I trust, this is a treatment of the WWII Pacific theater that should be right up my alley. I'd really like to get this to the table (real or virtual) this year.

GOAL: 1 complete campaign play

Since I don't currently have a prospective opponent lined up, I rate this as moderate difficulty.

I picked this up in 2012 after reading a bunch of good things about it on BGG. I really like the opportunity to start in 1937 and see how things deviate from history. I also think the system has some elegant solutions to some common problems at this scale.

GOAL: 1 complete 1937 campaign

I have high hopes for achieving this goal. I'm currently gearing up to play a PBEM campaign with

We'll be starting in January as soon as we finish the Fall of France training scenario. There's still room for a 3rd player.

In a PBEM format this game may not be over by the end of 2013, but if we're still playing and making progress in a year I'll consider this goal fulfilled.

For a couple years this was my most played game, but the I've barely played it at all the last two years. It's time to reverse that trend. I've played all of the base scenarios; what I'd really like to do is play all the way through one of the battle packs.

GOAL: 12 plays

I rate this as difficult. In order to meet this goal I'll need to both find a regular opponent and enough time over the year to play through an entire battle pack. Achievable, but difficult.

I played a fair amount of Descent in 2011 with my wife and she really enjoyed it, so last winter I acquired a copy of Road to Legend. We were both interested in trying a campaign game, but couldn't find the time last year with everything else going on. We did set it up once near the end of the year and played through the first week of the game, and it was kind of a let down (we drew a particularly rough quest for the 1st dungeon level, and the heroes didn't do so well). We'd both rather play this as a multiplayer rather than 2 player game. I'm not sure if we'll be able to field a regular crew to make that happen, but I'm going to set a goal anyway:

GOAL: 10 plays

...or however long it takes to complete 1 campaign. Given that we're unlikely to play this unless it's with a group, I think this will be a difficult goal to meet.

I think this is a moderately difficult goal, due primarily to the length.

After my smashing victory at this game at BGG.con, perhaps I should just retire this game and go out on top, but it's too good to stop playing - or to only play once a year, as is often the case. While this is my 2nd most played wargame, most of those plays are for individual 6 months scenarios. I'd really like to play a campaign from 41-45.

GOAL: 1 complete campaign game

While I'm sure I'll play some 6-month scenarios of this game during the year, I think this will be difficult to meet. The nice thing about the scenarios is they can be played in one session. It's much more difficult to see the campaign through. A play of EuroFront will count towards meeting this goal.

This has become one of my favorite games, though it seems I only get to play it at BGG.con now. Fortunately my wife likes it too. When this game first came out it seemed like I was teaching it all the time and I got really tired of that, but I'm ready to teach it again, so I hope to expand my pool of opponents.

GOAL: 5 plays

Achieved: 11/24/13

I think this is fairly ambitious, but achievable. I will probably try to run this at Gamestorm this year to ensure at least one more play.

I've owned this game for several years. It's not my normal fair, but it seems like a fun way to spend an evening. I think I managed to drum up enough interest over the last few months that I could pull this off this year.

GOAL: 1 play

I rate this as moderately difficult. As I read it, this game requires a fairly sizable group (12ish) and a full evening to play. Getting enough interested people together on the same night is the challenge here.

I picked this up in December 2012 after playing Android: Netrunner and reading quite a bit about it here. I bought this specifically to play with my wife. She's a big fan a cooperative games and LOTR, so it seemed like a good fit. We tried it once so far and she likes it, and it's quick enough to pull out in the evening when we don't have time or energy for a longer game. I look forward to the deck construction aspect of the game.

GOAL: 12 plays

That's an average of just 1/month. I think this is a fairly easy goal to meet.

It sounds like the kind of experiential game I'd really enjoy, but it was pretty tough to grok based on my one read through the rules. If I can figure this out I think there are several people in my group who would be willing to give it a shot.

, that I'm really excited about (and I hope runs much longer than 8 sessions!), but past experience with online games tells me not to count on this until it actually happens.

I picked this up in mid-2012 based on lots of good comments (and session reports) here on RPGGeek. It looks really fun, and is probably the top candidate for our next campaign.

GOAL: 8 sessions
Achieved: 4/14/13

8 sessions seems to be about average for our campaigns these days, so if we can do that I'll be very satisfied. I'm still going to rate this as moderately difficult, because we've had a lot of trouble lately just getting together regularly.

This is the new, WFRP 3e version of The Enemy Within, which is is not a conversion of the old campaign, but a new campaign that shares some themes (and a name) with it. I've run multiple WFRP 2e campaigns for my group (including the old Enemy Within), and we've really enjoyed them. I've only just started reading this book, and have only one 1 session with WFRP 3e, but I'm definitely interested in playing this at some point.

GOAL: 10 sessions

10 sessions would in theory get us through the first act of this epic campaign. I would be thrilled if we get that far with it during this year, but I think this will be difficult because 3e is a different beast than what we're familiar with and I'm not 100% confident we'll love the system.
