So, there's a reason this isn't titled simply "The Year I Returned to Wargaming."

I've been playing wargames on my PC pretty consistently over the last 20 years. I have been playing games that I would consider strategy games (some of which are categorized as wargames here on BGG) consistently for the last 20 years. But I have not played any tabletop, cardboard, hex-and-counter style wargames in the last 20 years. Nor have I played any historical miniatures wargaming over the last 20 years - just a couple years of Warhammer in there, which I don't count.

So this year, the bug bit me hard after Gen Con, but got its start AT Gen Con. I go every year (because I live in Indy), and every year I find some new company or new game genre that sets me off in a new, interesting direction in gaming.

This year, it started at Gen Con with an impulse buy at the CoolStuffInc booth...

... of this. It was at a sale price cheaper than their online price, and there was only 1 copy of it. I snatched it up on Thursday of the Con, when you're never supposed to buy anything off the dealer floor shelves that isn't a new release.

Cracked it open when I got home and loved the large counters and beautiful map artwork, and overall wonderfully evocative historical feel.

So this got me into looking for more historical wargames, initially from Worthington Games, but that quickly led me to GMT and MMP...

Sprawling. Epic. Fascinating era of history. One of my favorite movies is Elizabeth, with Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush. I've read several books on the era, and thought this would be a great multiplayer game to spring on my boardgaming group, who usually number at least 5, with frequently as many as 8. So I thought I'd have no problem getting the group together.

Then I read the rules, and tried to imagine all of them (who all play mostly Ameritrash with some Euros mixed in) trying to prepare for this. Probably not going to happen.

So that led me to start looking for some true wargamers to game with...

After struggling with the VQ rules, I stumbled across Calandale's videos. If I were struggling to curtail my desire to buy more wargames, this would have been extremely unfortunate. But I was really just looking for an excuse to buy more.

Looking for videos of CDG's being demonstrated, I ran across videos of this. Smaller scope, only 2 player, no diplomacy, another fascinating era of history. Count me in.

Continuing my foray into CDG's, this one got me into looking into wargame artists as well, which in turn furthered my interests into looking for more interesting games covering some less well-traveled corners of conflict simulation.

Plus, more great videos from Enrico.

With my wargame interest sparking from my love of history, I realized I needed to get back to my roots: Civil wargaming. I played ACW miniatures wargaming in high school, which itself was spurred on by my absolute obsession with the ACW that started when I was in grade school.

What ACW games were available? Outside of the miniatures wargaming, I had only ever played Avalon Hill's Devil's Den. I remember liking the smaller-scale tactical game, but the choices were kind of overwhelming. I turned to the grognards on BGG to get some ideas.

In the end, I opted to move away from tactical and look at operational. The GCACW series is a real winner. I went with this one a) because it was newer and cheaper than the OOP titles and b) I didn't know much about Chattanooga-Chickamauga. Definitely my weakest area of knowledge about the war.

I don't regret my choice. This is a fantastic game, and I can't wait for the reprint of Stonewall Jackson's Way and, fingers crossed, reprints of other titles in the series.

Of course, the other thing I've learned in returning to tabletop wargaming - all roads lead to WWII. There is no escaping it. The 5000th game simulating the Eastern Front in WWII will soon be here.

And I, for one, welcome our new WWII overlords. As a person with great historical interest in WWII, I can be of valuable service rounding up other individuals who may display an interest in WWII history to work in the OCS mines.

About this time, the Fall Sale at GMT took place. After really enjoying Unhappy King Charles, and looking for another 2-player CDG in another dusty, usually forgotten era of wargaming, this seemed like a natural choice. And it delivered.

It was $17 in the GMT Fall Sale! $17! The perfect excuse I needed to cover that tactical side of the ACW that I'd passed on to get Battle Above the Clouds.

By now, through BGG I'd found another local wargamer. And he's big into ancients. We had played the intro scenario to Carthage: The First Punic War, and really enjoyed it. I had looked at this game in the series, but it was OOP and way out of price range on the secondary market.

Until I got lucky and snagged an excellent-condition copy for $17 from a BGG auction. Total impulse bid that I had no idea or expectation that I'd actually win.

This was listed in the same auction as Rise of the Roman Republic. Having been introduced to Berg's games with Carthage, combined with another not-oft-represented era in wargaming, this was a BIN for $25. I'm not made of stone.

Another right-price-right-time option. Haven't had a chance to play it yet. I can put it on my wargame bucket list. Grognards largely swear by it, and I'll trust their judgment that owning a copy is in my best interest.

In October, I connected with a group of wargamers in Indianapolis who have their own club. 19&1 has been around for over 30 years here in Indy, has a dedicated gaming location, and caters to all manner of wargamer interests - miniatures, multiplayer, hex-and-counter, CDG, you name it, somebody there plays it.

So my initial wargaming buddy and I joined up with another couple guys at 19&1 to try out The Great War in Europe: Deluxe Edition as a 4-player multiplayer game.

This got me interested in WWI games. World War I has always fascinated me even more than WWII. I think because, growing up, I never really knew anything about it - in my history classes, and in the gaming I had been doing up to that point, it was sort of overlooked. I was fascinated by the trenches, the scope of it, and how it seemed so different compared to WWII. There wasn't a lot about it that affected popular culture the way WWII did. At least not for Americans.

So I wanted to find something that took an almost scholarly approach to the conflict. Something that felt like a real study. This fit the bill.

It just happened to work out that I spent some Christmas money on it, right when the C3i #26 shipped with all the TitE stuff included! Fortuitous!

Watching some videos on War Galley and an unfortunately-timed viewing of Master and Commander got me on a naval kick. The small ship action on the Great Lakes really drew me to this one. I'll probably get the other games in the Flying Colors series, too... but this will hold me for now.

This was actually SITTING ON THE SHELF at a FLGS in Cincinnati. On a trip there to pick up some modular tables to help continue to feed my wargaming obsession, I couldn't help but look up a FLGS to see if they might have any wargames in stock. They had dozens. DOZENS. Nothing like that exists in Indianapolis. The nice woman at the counter, who informed that this was her store's 40th year in business, probably wondered why I was wiping tears from my eyes.

Possibly the best get-me-over-$100-at-CSI purchase I'll ever make. This game is fantastic at every level. Small, quick, beautifully, maddeningly deep. Played it 5 times already. Lost every time. Will keep playing it. Trying hard not to go play it right now. I've got counters from 1914 to clip, dammit!
