In 2012 I set out with a goal in terms of gaming (see the list here), to become more focused and to play the household favourites more than we did. I also hoped to play a number of longer games and tear the shrink of others.

It was prompted by a desire to get more quality out of our gaming instead of chasing the newest hotness. I wanted to explore my collection and figure out what worked and what didn't.

Over the course of 2012 many things changed, not least me personally and I realized that having fun is not just about gaming, even gaming with your family or loved ones. This is somewhat reflected in the status of 2012. We met some of our goals and missed (by a lot) on others.

Overall though we took a number of things from it.

1) Focus on quality (fewer games overall played intensively) rather than quantity (a lot of games played only a few times)
2) Be realistic about the games you expect to play
3) Have fun!

So, with that in mind, we sat down to (my wife and I) and formulated a set of goals for 2013 and we feel very confident about them.

As always, feel free to comment on the resolutions and our progress.

Happy Gaming! meeple

We enjoyed our Innovation so much last year (and semi-continuing it this year) that we wanted to try something similar with a different game.

Our main quest this year will be to explore Kingdom Builder in-depth. I have also decided to attempt to detail our thoughts on the game as we go along in search of more deep gaming experiences.

Target: 100 plays.

Story so far:
January: 8
February: 15
March: 15
April: 10
May: 6
June: 4
July: 7
August: 4
September: 1
December: 11

Total: 81

Result: 81/100 - well, that would seem to indicate we fell short of the target and we did. Given that we had a 3 month period with just 1 play I am confident we could have made it.

The game has stayed interesting and given the short play time we often get 2-4 plays in one sitting. This means it is ok if we just play the game 2-4 times a month, it all adds up.

We have just bought the 2nd expansion and I am confident this game will continue to see play, though perhaps not at this pace given newer games that play in a similar time frame, like Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia (35 min).

thumbsup - I'll count that as a win despite not reaching the target.

Last year we reached 104 plays with Innovation. This year we have set our sights a little lower - at least officially. We are shooting for 52 plays of the expansion (though I won't record the expansion plays except here and in my play comments).

Target: 52 plays.

Story so far:
January: 8
February: 3
March: 2
April: 1
May: 0
June:0
July: 4
August: 5
September: 2

Total: 25

Result: 25/50 or half way there. This one is a fail. We had a period over the summer where this game saw repeat plays and it grew on us. Unfortunately it suffered like all our gaming once we hit September. Overall, the base game even seems to have gone off the boil for us at the moment, though it still remains a favourite, it just never gets played.

thumbsdown - fail and slowly being left behind?

This will be the representative item for this target because I really want to dig this game.

Our goal is to get a decent number of plays of these medium length games (60-90 minutes). We seem to do them in batches but hopefully this year we will spread them out a bit more as I aim to continue exploring them.

Target: 8-10 plays each.

Status: Agricola 9 plays / Key Market 8 plays / Puerto Rico 17 plays / Suburbia 12 plays

Result: BIG WIN!

This was a huge success for us. Agricola flopped in 2012 and here we are with 9 plays... That game and Key Market suffered in the sense that they are on the surface a good deal more complex, they require more thought and planning.

We have really grown with these games, though perhaps in the case of Puerto Rico we eventually tired somewhat of it. As for Suburbia we decided to wait for the expansion, which is sitting on our shelf now in shrink still.

thumbsup - massive win and encouraging in terms of value from our games.

These are games that are either new to us or games we play not enough that we want to explore. Our tentative hope is slightly less than the item above as only time will tell how they fare once they hit the table.

Target: 3-5 plays each.

Status: Ground Floor 2 play / Keyflower 3 plays / Phil Eklund* 1 play / Vanuatu 3 plays

* I know, this might seem like cheating but we LOVE his games and this covers all his games in that timeframe.

Result: Fail to an extent. We did hit the lower end of the target on 2 of the 4 games. It seems that we are off Phil Eklund games? I think I was shooting for a few plays of Bios: Megafauna for this one which never happened.

The other games indicate a trend we also saw earlier, namely that games that have a high entry cost or seem complex get left on the shelf. I value all of these games but if I consider playing them I think it requires too much thinking and pick something else.

I am unsure if this is now a trend or temporary. If the first, then perhaps time to cull the collection - in which case it was probably a bad idea to get the expansion for Keyflower...

thumbsdown - fail, though lessons learned.

Finally, these are the long, thematic games that we want to explore further. We just don't want to put any pressure on ourselves, except to say that if we have the time and are in the mood, then surely one of these 3 games should hit the table.

Target: 1-? plays each.

Status: 1825* 0 plays / Mage Knight 3 plays / Polis: Fight for the Hegemony 1 play

* The whole family, though most likely the one pictured.

Result: Given our low target we got there just about. We got 2 of 3 games played and 1825 just continues to be a love story that will never fade. I even have a copy of Unit 1 on order just to complete the set, though I am still missing a few of the expansions.

thumbsup - because 2 out of 3 ain't bad...

Summing up:

Kingdom Builder - almost but not quite, still showed us it had legs.
Echoes of the Past - might just happen to stay in the past.
Shorter games - and more in-depth exploration of those was a success.
Mid-lenght games - was decent but showed a trend towards shorter games.
Long games - we are past these and they are reserved for holidays and such.

There are a few things I did not touch upon in detail, namely that I got admitted to University and began in September. This coincides with the slump we experienced from there on till late November. I have a feeling I am slowly getting integrated and it will open up for more gaming opportunities even once classes begin again in February.

We will make changes and perhaps even start culling our collection to get rid of some of the games that are not played or rarely.

Stay tuned for 2014...
