Living in central Texas we don't see much snow (read none), so every couple of years my family and I like to take a trip to Colorado for some winter fun during Christmas. We like to stay at the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch located in Granby, Colorado.

http://www.ymcarockies.org/snow-mountain-ranch-winter-park-c...

They have just about everything a family needs to make Christmas special. There were ten of us in all- my wife and kids, her sister, brother, and her other brother + 3 kids.

Here is how we spent our time during the day and the games we played at night.

Thanks for reading.

Temp: cold
New snow fall: none

We got to Snow Mountain Ranch (SMR) around 2pm, and quickly started a snow ball fight. The kids decided to use the road to the cabin as a hill to sled down. We were excited about the week.

We didn't have much time to do much else after going grocery shopping, unpacking the vehicles, and cooking dinner.

Sometime that evening we were visited by a group of Christmas Carolers which really set the mood for the week.

New Snow: About 5" Yeah!

My wife and I started the day by heading to the program building so we could sign up for the various activiites. I wanted to try the new rock climbing wall and snowshoeing. My wife and kids wanted to go Horse back riding, and my oldest nephew Carlos (17) wanted to try the dog sledding. Real dog sledding were you control a team of dogs after some training. I thought that was way cool, but so did every one else. They were booked solid through January.

Afterwords, we gathered up the family and went to the sledding hill. Going down is a blast, coming up not so much. SMR has a tow rope, but it was out of commission while we were there. Later, after lunch, we were scheduled for an hour of rock climbing and afterwards went rolling skating.

My wife and I use to climb in Oregon about ten years ago. Boy are we out of shape! We both managed to make it to the top of two of the runs, but damn did it whipped our butts. Everyone else made it most of the way up, but without proper shoes (my brother-in-law Bert was trying to climb in Birkenstocks cause he forgot his shoes in his lodge room), it was harder then necessary.

Roller skating really brought back some memories. It has been 25-30 years since I have been on a pair of roller skates. Well, its kinda like riding a bike, the body starts to remember. Lets just say I didn't fall.

The person I was most proud of through all of the trip was my youngest daughter Olivia. Olivia is, Oh, how shall I say this, strong willed? Her stubbornness was a positive though, and by the end of the week she was skating across the rink pretty well. Never wanting to give up, no matter how many times she fell. In fact, no matter what she tried, she was so determined to succeed she would not want to leave when it was time to go. "One more time daddy, just one more time." My kids are amazing, and I love them so.

Around 4pm it started snowing pretty hard. Within two hours we had about 5 inches of new snow on the ground. We played in it for hours. Snowball fights, sledding down the hill, burying each other in it. I'm really just a big kid at heart, and I love being silly with my kids.

That evening we played Zombicide, which is a huge hit with the kids. Julianna, my older daughter (11), is always coming up with great ways of looking at the situation at hand, and offering a solution that usually keeps us out of harms way. My youngest nephew Sebi (12) is convinced there is an imminent Zombie Apocalypse. He and his friends have even put together survivor kits for the impending doom.

He loves this game.

I do too. If you read my comments about the game, you'll get a pretty good idea were I'm coming from.

Tues, Dec 25 Christmas Day!
Temp: still really cold
New snow: Another 2+ inches

Christmas day started off with cold hands and some mild frustration. With all the new snow from last night the rental van (a dodge caravan) was having a hell of a time getting up the hill (I blame the tires). Bert kept trying to back down the hill and get enough momentum to make it up, but he would just end up spinning out. I managed to get the van about half way up to the cabin below us were I proceeded to put chains on the tires. After that we had no problems traveling around, and just left the chains on the rest of the week. The van never left SMR so no big deal.

The rest of Christmas day got much better. After sledding and lunch we all went snowshoeing. I wanted to get out into the woods and enjoy the peace and quiet. I set too fast a pace for my wife and her sister to keep up (sorry), so they ended up turning back to the Nordic Center. They drank hot coco in the warm lodge so they were happy. The rest of us managed to hike for quite a while. It was quiet beautiful.

After dinner, we got a lot of game playing in. We started off playing a couple of games of Escape. Then I and the kids played a game of Lords or Waterdeep while my wife introduced Seasons to her brother Chalo and his daughter Camila (15).

Escape went over well with all the dice rolling and chaos, just a really fun game.

Lords of Waterdeep has been a big hit for a while now. Everyone in the family who's tried it has enjoyed playing.

My wife rarely teaches games, that is what I'm for. She did a great job teaching her brother and his daughter, and they really had a lot of fun. My niece loved the art work, where I think she was sending pics of the cards to some of her friends.

Temp: burrrr
New Snow: none

My wife and the kids were scheduled for horseback riding at 1:00pm and rest of us went snowmobiling!

There is a place call On The Trial Rentals were we could rent the machines and gear and blast up the 130 miles of trials. Because the group before us was late getting back we ended up with one high performance machine. They were about to give it to Bert who had not driven one before, that's when I said "hey how about we switch"? He was all for it. They all thought the basic machines were fast. Ha! The machine I was on was a beast. At one point I was able to hit 60mph which was fast enough for me. Someone else had manage to get it to 112mph! We did have a couple mishaps due to Carlos and his inexperience. I should have been a little more patient, and he should have not hit the tree. No biggie, he was fine. So was the tree.

Later, when I let Bert lead, was when things really got interesting. There is a wide open space called Chicken Run were you can just run flat out in powdery snow. We all got turned around and ended up in 3 to 4 feet of soft snow. If you stay on the gas and keep momentum, no problem, if you slow down to much.

Once I realized we were heading in the wrong direction, I turned around and blasted up the hill. Once I found the trial again I noticed no one followed me. Hmmm? Where did they go? So back down the hill I go, only to fine Carlos and his dad had both buried their snowmobiles in 3 feet of snow!

After maybe a half an hour (which seemed like days) we managed to free both machines and were on our way again. We never left the trial after that.

Besides being a few minutes late returning the snow mobiles and the $50 dented back bumper(Carlos), we had a super great time, and look forward to doing it again the next time we go.

We got home late after stopping at the grocery store, and were pretty beat up from the days events. That evening we started a game of Thunderstone, but were unable to finish due to the late hour.

Thur, Dec 27
Temp: Below Zero in the morning!
New snow: Maybe another 1 or 2 inches

Thursday we decided to take a break from the snow and went to the craft shop. They had a ton of different crafts to do. Most of us decided to paint some ceramics. I painted this:

Later we had archery scheduled and then more rock climbing and roller skating. This time Bert was the star while rock climbing cause he was actually wearing real shoes. He was able to make it to the top of the second hardest climb, I was impressed.

That evening I got in a game of Season with Chalo and his kids Carlos and Camila. My wife must be a better teacher than I because Chalo and Camila scored higher than I ever have- both finishing with over 200 points.

At some point during the week we had another full game of Thunderstone, just not sure when.

I'm almost to the top

Temp: ^#&^%$#@^@^&%!!!!
New snow: Clear skies, hence the expletives.

Our last day. We spent some more time sledding and trying to ice skate, ouch! After a week of hard charging we were pretty worn out and beat up. We were scheduled for cross country skiing but decided we had fallen on our butts enough for the week. I also wanted to try snow boarding, but due to cost, it didn't happen. Next time.

Seasons was played again, this time just me, Chalo, and Carlos. Finally, I won a game! whoohoo. I know the majority dislike Seasons with more than two, but I have enjoyed it with all player counts. The best part of playing with more players is having a wider choice of cards to work with. After 8 or 9 games I still haven't seen all the cards in play.

We were up early Saturday morning, and on our way home to Texas.

We had an absolute blast playing in the snow, and I look forward to doing it again.
