On your profile under the 'Stats' tab is something called 'Largest disparities in ratings'. If you sort it by 'Delta' you can see which game your rating is most out of whack with the BGG zeitgeist. Post your game with the biggest delta and explain why you're the lone voice of reason for this one.

I'm willing to admit that my rating may not be fair. I've only played once, with all new players and it's possible that we may have had a rule wrong or were just playing with bad groupthink. I played this at an all day gaming convention and after a certain point we got into a stalemate where no one could break through and win. We were looking at a long slog where after another hour or three someone would finally manage to get lucky and eek out a win. We decided the game was broken and bagged it so that we could move on to other games. It's more likely we were wrong than the game, but until I learn better that's my rating.

Because my game with biggest delta difference probably reflects an unfair bias, I'm submitting another rating. This is actually the game that has the third biggest delta for me, but it's the rating difference that I most firmly stand behind. I really can't stand this game. It's freaking paper-rock-scissors! Yes, I get that there are different powers and it's got other things going on, but it boils down to RPS for me, and quite frankly I'd rather play that instead of this. I don't get the love for this game.

My hatred of Ingenious is pretty well established at this point. It's hexagonal dominoes where each player makes maybe 1 meaningful decision if they're lucky, and only at the very end of the game which means you have to slog through 45 minutes of boredom to get there. (Not much different from a basketball game now that I think about it.)

I have friends who try to convince me that it's better than I give it credit for, so we'll play a game. And it sucks. Just like last time. It makes me want to demote our friendship to "acquaintance" status.

I guess not all of Knizia's games can be masterpieces.

I'll confess up front I'm not a fan for worker placement games and lean more towards Ameritrash. I do enjoy Euros but this....this excruciatingly boring wood fest is a tediously torturous endeavor that makes monopoly look fun.

Everything about the game from its mechanic to the horrible board just turned me off. In fairness, it probably didn't help that I was introduced to it by 2 guys that are brain burner euro crazy. They ran through a brief rule explanation then fiercely battled for supremacy for two games while I floundered along in a malaise of confusion and boredom.

Whatever the reason, the only use I have for this game is kindling if I need to start a fire....preferable a fire under the factory that makes Le Havre.

These were my comments:

This game is a kind of reverse-Scotland Yard. It is the same kind of outguessing/chase game but instead of a few chasing one, it is 2 chasing many. I wasn't a fan of Scotland Yard so I didn't have high hopes for this one going in.

My one playthrough was with 8 people, the max for this game, which has 2 nuns chasing 6 novices. If one of the novices gets back to their room with their "secret desire" then they win. The nuns only win by catching the novices 6 times (equal to the number of novices) before this happens. With 8 it is nigh-impossible for the nuns to win. There is only so much ground 2 players can cover on the map while following somewhat stringent movement rules. No matter what one of these novices is going to have a path that gets them back to the room before the nuns can catch them 6 times. I can see how the game would be a lot more balanced with fewer players though.

Aside from the imbalance with 8 players, this game has two other big problems. The first is a set of rules that doesn't always make sense. A big example of this is that when the novices get a key of a certain color they can use that key to open any locked door on the map, not just the doors matching that color. If this is the case then why even color-code the keys/locks?

This first problem is compounded by the second which is one of, if not the worst-written rulebook for a game I've ever seen. In just a single playthrough we came across 2-3 different rules situations that were not explained at all in the book. Don't get me wrong, I understand rules confusion can happen in games but a. This is not the most complicated game system and b. 2-3 different rules clarifications needed on the first play tells me that they are common enough occurrences that the rulebook should have explained them.

I will say though that the theme is goofy and fun but the game system is not very well done in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the set paths the nuns have to follow and the amount of penalty the nuns receive for running at the benefit of moving just one more space than the novices can for example. And there are several more poorly done elements compared to Scotland Yard which, while I don't particularly enjoy, is at least elegantly crafted.

This game just feels very rushed from the bad design to the skimpy rulebook.

I don't understand why people like this "game". Every review seems to be positive, and it's sold enough to print revisions and expansions. I found the game to lack any meaningful decisions, the art was nice but the experience was drudging. Both times I played this I couldn't wait for it to be over, and it's less fun than a root canal.

So, BGG says this one is a 7.4 and I give it a '2.5', for a delta of 4.9.

The first problem with the game is deciphering how to play, since the ruleset and rulebook are both a bit squirrelly. I could overlook that, however, as I have with some other games (Phoenicia and Bridge Troll, for example).

But the next problem is that, once you've got the rules down, you're really just moving from place to place over and over again and rolling dice over and over again. (For a loooooong time.)

Frankly, this game stands or falls on the narrative and the theme. As we played Arkham Horror, cards with story elements were drawn, but what little narrative they did provide was disjointed, sometimes contradictory, and toward the end of the game began to be repetitive. I cannot imagine playing this game repeatedly and getting anything whatsoever from the narrative.

I find that these sorts of boardgames generally fail to have any theme immersion or coherent narrative. I've got a huge past history of playing RPGs (D&D, certainly... but Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay WFRP1 and WFRP2 extensively)... and compared to those experiences, these games pale in comparison.

In short, Arkham Horror is "Call of Cthulhu, Jr."

Flamesuit donned.

"Takes a game I don't MIND and makes it seventeen times as long and thirty times more annoying. The game is built to actively SLOW you down - cities getting downgraded, wheat having to be used for the knights, you can't get the action cards without spending the new types of cards to upgrade your virtual city to give you the chance to win the action cards....and these new types of card means that instead of getting two goods with a city you tend to just get one and this new card instead.....UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH."

Lost Cities if for me not just bad, but misplaced.
It is a kid's game and not even trying to hide it. If it was under the correct area (Children's games) I would give it a better rating (actually I would not rate it at all since I don't play children's games).

My second largest dispariy is Stone Age which is a simplistic family game that takes the worker placement mechanic and waters it down to irrelevance.

To prove that I am not all negative, my third largest disparity is Bison: Thunder on the Prairie which I rate a 10, much higher than the average geek. It is a very interactive, almost warlike strategy game with great tiles' development.

Too easy, too shallow, too repetative. There are almost no meaningful choices which aren't blatantly obvious (which mission gives the best benefit with the least risk?). Its problem is that it pretends to have depth and variety but it is merely a facade...a veil to distract the player from the fact that you've got a box full of components that deliver only a half-dozen concepts.

And I even like Arkham Horror. But this game? Never again.

BGG rates this thing at 6.817, which I think is a bit high, considering it's not a game. It's timed puzzle solving. It's like sitting two people down with sudoku puzzles and declaring as "winner" whoever finishes first. A game only in the loosest, most barely-applicable, for-legal-status-only sense. I rate it a 1.

My second biggest delta is Tales of the Arabian Nights which has a rating of 7.033. I also don't see this as much of a game, but at least every now and then you get to make a decision in it, even though there's seldom any point to doing so. For this reason, it gets a 2 from me.

I have a bigger disparity with a couple games I rate worse than the average but I'd rather do a positive one

My rating: 9.5
BGG: 6.098

A large part of this is a big bias in that I grew up playing this game, so there's the nostalgia factor, that and I just enjoy finding words. I think many would enjoy it more if they would focus on enjoying the search for words and not worry about how many more others find than them.

It's also great because:
--You can play it for as long or as short as you and your group would like
--Set up and clean up are quick and easy
--Components are few (paper and pens are abundant and don't need to be stored with the game) and very durable
--It's wicked cheap
--It's different every time you play
--It's family friendly
--It can increase your vocabulary (and/or your children's)

so there!

This is the exception: The only game I've ever played once and decided that under no circumstances would I ever play it again. I hated every single thing about it. Worse, turn after turn, all the things I hated happened over and over and over....

No apologies here. The Geek crowd doesn't love word games or party games and this combines the two. I love all the categories, but the imagined plot blurbs for real B-movies just hit me in some strange, sublimely funny way.

This is followed closely by my only 1 rating for The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Game. This earns me a delta of 3.43 because its Geek rating is 4.426. Besides the game being so, so bad, the questions that are excuse for the progress board are loosely researched and often misleading falsehoods for many of the situations. I would not refuse to play many games, but I would this one.

First of all, the method is not accurate, IMO. The "Geek Rating" takes the number of ratings into consideration. So the next great upcoming or not widely available game with an average of 8.5 would still be, like 5.7 on that scale.
Unfortunatley, the "delta" always uses the "Geek Rating", never the "Average Rating". So, to get to a more valid conclusion, add the column "Average Rating" to your view (upper left, open "Columns", sort the whole by delta again, but scroll along the "Avg Rating" column, until you find a REAL disparity.

Here is mine:
Coppertwaddle: 9 (mine)
Geek Rating: 5.75
Avg Rating: 5.99
Disparity: 3.1

I still think, this game is an outstanding 2-player cardgame. Its flaw are the rules, which are confusing sometimes and makes it hard to get into the gameplay.

One comment (rating it 8) says: "Be warned, however, that play will require fairly extensive research of the rules and the game website, plus 5-7 games played before all of the different complexities of the game are understood."

But if you do, this one is addicting.

I hate this 'game' pure and simple. You need to learn all the cards to be able to play it so in a sense it is a chore rather than a leisure activity.
There is so much screw you in it munchkin plays nicer and there are more happy feeling after a game of diplomacy than after this.

Plus the theme/artwork is dull!

Agricola is a close second with a Geek rating of 8.158 my rating of 3 and a delta of 5.16.

I just don't get the hype with agricola there might be an ok game in there but cant play it without fanboys gushing over how great it is ... that just leaves me cold. I don't need your opinion repeatedly shoved down my throat I will form my own thank you very much.

I rate it a 3. I disliked my first game so much that I've resolved not to play it again. I dislike fiddly cube-pushing optimization games, and this one epitomizes the genre. It would have been better with cubes because at least then the pieces wouldn't have rolled off the table. The most enjoyable part of my play was playing Dominion on my Android phone during the downtime.
