Here's a list of stuff I'm bringing/hoping to play at this year's ConnCon. Any takers?

The game I'm most excited about at the moment. I'm running it as an official event at 1:00 PM on Saturday, but I'm definitely up for playing it more than once over the course of the convention.

I really like the blending of "stock market game" with "pushing-armies-around-a-giant-map-of-the-world-type game." It's meaty, but not in the sense that there's numbers to crunch and a million little details that you have to sift through, but rather in the sense that there is a large, complex situation at hand, and you must not only fight against your opponents' plans but sometimes also work with them when your interests align.

We had this when I was a kid but we never played it, and then it disappeared somewhere. I got a replacement copy off a friend a couple of years ago but I still haven't gotten it to the table. Any takers? It's a simple trick-taking game with a fantasy theme pasted on; players take turns choosing the goal for the hand, but the player with the dragon card can attempt a "power play." Each card has its own individual artwork, done by the guy who did the graphic design for Dark Tower. Anyway, it's one of the few unplayed games in my collection, and that really needs to get fixed.

The old-school game from 1983 that Warren dM and I enjoy and everyone else hates. But! This year we have cooked up some super-cool homebrew tweaks which I think will surprise and delight everyone. Specifically we yanked out some of the extraneous bits to reduce the randomness and speed up play, reshaped the victory conditions to make bashing the leader more difficult, and also created some rules to solve both the dogpiling and turtling issues. I think we're going to try to get it to the table Friday night. You should totally join us! There are basilisks and ghosts and vampire bats and all manner of what-have-you.

Sunday morning Avri Klemer, John McDonough and I will be hosting "Revenge of the Abstracts/NO SAVING THROW." We will have lots of great two-player abstract games with us and will be ready to teach/play. We picked Sunday morning because all the Ameritrashers will be sleeping off their hangovers, and we can filch the little plastic boglins and arch-zombies out of their Fantasy Flight games and make them be regular old pawns in the abstracts. "Ordinarily the Ravening Helldrake would get a free acid spray attack when it's flanked from the right in flat terrain, but this is just checkers, so it gets jumped by the smurf and dies." Will there be asskickings? Yes, there will, and I don't mean "yay, I rolled sixes against the Glittering Vampoozle," I mean "I have defeated you in manly intellectual combat; please slink away and explain your failure to your wife and children."

Anyway, I'm particularly hoping to play some more Gipf with the expansion pieces.

Avri taught me this at last year's con, and I'd like to get in another game with him. I really enjoy this one; it's chess-like in feel, but the game plays more quickly and has a tighter endgame because pieces can (mostly) only move forward.

Warren dM asked me to bring along. It's one of my few "10s," so...no problem there. Never mind the fact that I got clobbered at it last year.

Warren dM wants to play again. I am all for that.

What I particularly enjoy about Louis XIV is that it's a game where strategy is important, but at the same time you are also having to react to your opponents' plays and revise your plans accordingly. There's no "perfect optimal plan," but rather a bunch of different options from which you can choose. Will they pan out? Maybe, but only if you can roll with the punches and stay one step ahead.

Warren dM wants to try. Can do! Ideally it would be a foursome…people often play this as a six-player game just because there are so few games that play well with that number, but the feeling of being in competition with the entire table gets diluted with that many. With four it's a tight little nail-biter. Three or five would be okay too.

Warren dM wants to play again. I accept that challenge! Mark has this, so I don't have to bring it. It's another game that's at its best with four, though three is good too, just a little more intense. Naturally we'll be playing without the ill-conceived blue action cards.

I asked Mark to bring. This is a great little game that I'm always wanting to play more. I was unsure about it on the first couple of outings, but I've come to like it more and more as time has gone on.
