I know there's quite a few gamers out there with a hate for paper money. I think there's some who won't even play a game if there's paper money involved. This got me thinking about annoying components in games. What's yours?

Victory point tokens.

I played this game for the first time last week and though I loved the game, I hated hated hated counting out the victory point tokens and making change all the time. So tedious and unnecessary. They should've included more tokens for sure. From now on I will be using a pad and pencil to track score.

Cardboard money.

I don't mind paper money at all as long as the paper is good quality and it works well with the game. Cardboard money is not a good alternative especially if you are constantly using the money. It's hard to stack, hard to sort and a pain to exchange between a personal hand and the bank.

**EDIT**

Not long after posting this I received a copy of Crude: The Oil Game. When I opened it up and saw all the cardboard money, I groaned. However after playing the game I realized that the money is fantastic. Why? Because each denomination is a different size. This made for easy sorting and easy identification. Great job overall.

For the most part, the components of this game are very high quality and very functional. The artwork on the gameboard and business tiles is beautiful.

Unfortunately, the currency -- US $$$ with values printed only on one side of cards so that cash holdings are secret info -- is all the same shade of green. This makes it too easy to mistake one value for another.

It would've made more sense to keep the backs green and vary the colors of the face sices according to values.

Otherwise, this game is perfect.

This game has a spectacularly beautiful gameboard and fine wooden tokens, but the nationality tokens are so small that they are difficult to pick up (which happens during play), often difficult to distinguish at a glance, and easily lost.

To get an appreciation for the small size of the nationality tokens, note that the long wooden pieces are identical to the roads in Settlers of Catan and tracks in TransAmerica.

Though the game itself is excellent, it is most often remembered for its odd 'slide rule' score tracking device.

While it looks fine in the image, the strips fit rather loosely in the cross-piece, so that adjusting one track often moves one or more of the other tracks.

A single score track and tokens would've been better. Even scoring with pen and paper is better.

When the game was published, the 'motherships' quickly acquired a bad reputation for their fragility.

The solution was a ring -- available separately -- applied over the pieces, as demonstrated by the mothership on the right in the image.

lousy cardstock.

this is a really fun game (our 9 yo LOVES it), but the cards are (nigh) impossible to shuffle. they are thin and have pointy corners. to top it off, they are "mini cards". end result: impossible to shuffle (i said that already, but it cheeses me off)!

and there are a LOT of action cards to shuffle!

solution was to buy sleeves and "press-shuffle". it works well.

but i hate having to do it.

(seriously, it's a really fun game! give it a try.)

This. Definitely this. Not just the stacking discs which fall over so easily, but the dragon bases as well. I need to set aside some time to glue those on.

It's a great mechanic, but setting up the cubes and keeping them in place is so annoying. I heard the second printing came with cube trays? Is that true?

And tracking the resources along the edge of the player board is awful.

This is not a good scoring track especially if there are a lot of bunnies on it. The divisions are not clear, and it is constantly being bumped because you're also placing the cards around the outside of the track.

The cards in this and many other games are too small. I guess when I start teaching my son, who is only 5 months old right now, this game they will be easier for him to hold. And I know that this can be fixed with this.

I can't believe I almost forgot about these.

The sliders are a terrible fit, most of them are too loose and fall off or move around with the slightest bump. There is the fix where you shove some tape into the slider's grooves but that's so fiddly and time-consuming. Luckily the guy I bought this from had already done it.

Also, why did they make it so the pointers are so far away from the numbers they are pointing at?!?!?! Look at the picture and tell me which 4 the Speed rating is supposed to be on. Probably the green one, but it's one bump away from being in-between.

Monotone robots.

Yes I know you can paint them, but I don't paint. Yes I know they all look different, but not so different that they're immediately identifiable (except Spinbot). It would've been nice if they could've included a bit of colour on the base maybe.

Thin player boards.

I understand when something like The Castles of Burgundy uses thin player boards because the boards are a larger size and the game is a lower price point. I don't understand when Fantasy Flight uses these thin cards in a $50++ game. It doesn't really detract from the gameplay, but it would've been nice to see better quality character sheets, especially when you're supposed to track health on the sheets using tokens.

Great game, but only one dice that has the potential to be rolled through the horses, displacing them. Simple solution - each player borrows a cup and die from Perudo, the colors are almost a match. Players can shake in the cup, cover their roll with their cup and reveal their roll on their turn. Speeds the game up nicely. This will probably work for a lot of other dice rolling games.

Wife points out that this also helps with knowing which horse belongs to which player.
