Dear all, last year I started to get into board game photography. I find it a great way to continue my hobby at home, especially for the long nights of winter when I really cannot be bothered to go outside.

I then discovered the monthly competition and have submitted something pretty much every month since.

As the BGG community is all about discussion and exchange I thought I would open myself up for critique by posting my entries in a Geeklist and allowing discussion of them.

If no discussion ensues then I will simply delete the above paragraph and say I just wanted to showcase my work, which is also ok.

Enjoy...

Also, in order to keep up with the monthly competitions you can subsribe to the list HERE

Thumbs are always welcome in the competition if it is ongoing

I will put the Geeklist link up, and the picture will link through to the original photo also.

Best of July 2012 Monthly Photo Contest

My first entry into the competition, and my favourite of a selection of photos I took of Dust, despite it not being very popular on the game entry compared to some of the others.

The little plastic miniatures made for great subjects.

This entry got me 14 thumbs, which was not bad for a first entry. I was pleased with the photo and resolved to take more.

Best of September 2012 Monthly Photo Contest

Summer took over following my initial enthusiasm of board game photography, which meant I missed my opportunity to enter August's competition. September might have followed, but for us buying Takenoko and playing it. When we realised how well the pieces looked when in our set of plastic bowls (it was a quiet weekend, I know) I took a snap of them and uploaded it. It was the only picture I put up so I thought it was worth a shot entering it into the competition.

My second entry got me 34 thumbs, although there was stiff competition and a lot of interest, with the winners getting over double this and closer to 100. But not bad for a beginner.

Best of October 2012 Monthly Photo Contest

My job finished part way through September, which meant I had a little more time on my hands. Photography kept me sane during the weeks of job application after job application.

As Takenoko looked so good, I tried to be a little bit creative and combined my two favourite things, Star Wars and board games! As I have a pretty decent sized army of Star Wars Miniatures they will probably cameo in a lot of my shots, because they are cool and also pretty diverse.

I wanted to have a quirky shot, one that told a story. After spending a little time playing with stormtroopers and pandas, and messing around with different lighting (in the end I went with an LED torch shining down on them) I came up with the result below:

I think because of the humour, this entry got me 72 thumbs and first place! I was dead chuffed to have come first with my third entry, but became by no means complacent. There are many more things to try out, and I was now looking forward to the competition each month.

Best of November 2012 Monthly Photo Contest

As winter approached I spent less time out doors and more indoors. I had a bit more time for photography and a little more experience. Because I really enjoyed taking my Takenoko shot i thought I would carry on the theme of combining games, this time Carcassonne and Memoir '44.

The one I entered was focussed more on Carcassonne as it was on tiles, not hexes:

I received 19 thumbs for this entry. I was hoping for more (maybe I did get a little complacent after all!) but I am still happy 19 people liked it enough to thumb it.

Maybe I made the wrong choice of entry - I did a slightly different take which went in under Memoir '44 but then I processed it in a better way and put it in under my own account as I did not want to put up duplicate photos. I think maybe I would have done better had the second of the two below been submitted - the first one below just shows you the first version I submitted. Let me know your thoughts.

Best of December 2012 Monthly Photo Contest

Over Christmas I took a few photos, but focussed mainly on one shot which I wanted go get right. I wanted to take something dark and sinister, and naturally Star Wars lends itself to this. So out came the Star Wars Miniatures and I began setting the scene. I used a black background, with the miniature balanced on a spice pot to get the height and have it away from everything else. I held one bike light in my mouth, pointed right at it, the other I held with my hand pointing it down. The free hand controlled the remote release lol.

Here is the result:

The competition is ongoing, so please feel free to have a look and thumb any you like. My photo is currently in the mid pack, and behind the leader pack by quite a ways. However the 32 thumbs are pretty respectable and I am happy with the photo - just a little annoyed someone else decided to go for the same sort of shot this month and theirs is better! The main problem I have in any competition is the other competitors...remove them and I would win a lot more often!

Best of January 2013 Monthly Photo Contest

In Jaunary we had snow. Now, Empire Strikes Back needs snow to do it justice, so I took advantage of the weather and busted out a few minis to remake a famous scene - unfortunately I was working quite a bit otherwise I would have happily spent all day taking photos of snow battles etc. but I only had time for the one shot.

I decided to get Luke and the Wampa, as shown below. I was taken at night so I had a little light from my bedroom showing and then I just used very long exposure to get as much light as possible. On hand pressed the remote release, the other was dangling the blue t-shirt that is the sky in the background. A little light balance adjustment in the digital darkroom and it was finished.

Here is the result:

The photo placed pretty middle of the pack with 29 thumbs, which may have more to do with not everyone else having a similar love for all things Star Wars, but also the competition was pretty stiff, there were some very nice shots. I am however toying with the idea of recreating many of the scenes from Star Wars with the miniatures in a semi-photojournalistic way. Possibly a long-term project for my camera and I.

Best of February 2013 Monthly Photo Contest

Back to the drawing board with February. I had a little time at work to think about things and I have been keeping an idea book for photographs which I can take relating to boardgames, which will start to appear as the years goes on.

I started with my aqua-tank idea for Get Bit! and the many things I could play around with. I took quite a few shots, firstly based on the ideas I had written down, but the actual final shots uploaded were ones which had evolved from the original ideas. I actually like pretty simple photos with not much going on, but instead of entering my favourite I entered the photo which got the most thumbs:

It is doing pretty well, I might be in the top 3 this month if it carries on with the thumbs it is getting. Feel free to add some thumbs if you think it is worth it

I would be interested in seeing what people think of the photo I did not enter, and see whether they think it would have done better. It was a much more simple shot, but one I liked:
