As opposed to The Hotness, these are the consolidated posts for games I want to spend time to learn more deeply.

Go may be the greatest abstract strategy game ever. Go gets a bit overlooked because of all the new pretty games, and every game is newer and most are more colorful (though there is something very pretty about the simplicity of black and white). Also, Go is intimidating to start – a big board with nothing on it: now place a stone.

I hope my posts here on BGG bring more new players into the fold. It is a bit of a specialist's game, and so the coverage of Go is weak on BGG, as most of the good players dedicate their time to Go-specific sites.

The first dozen games, I had no idea where to put any stone. It was as if someone told me to pick a blade of grass from the lawn. “Uh, yeah, um, which one?” Even if there were stones out there, where to put the next one was a total mystery.

For the next 20 games or so, I had a vague idea of what I was trying to do, but really didn’t have any concepts about how to go about it. At this stage, it’s like when you just learn how the chess pieces move, and so you just zip around looking for your opponent’s pieces that you can kill.

Just past this stage, you can start asking specific questions and have a weak opinion on the answers, and you are on your way. “Is this a better move than that?” “Is this group dead?” If you can get to this point before 20 games, you are ahead of the game, or you had a good tutor. (I was taught by Koreans who didn’t speak much English, but more English than I spoke Korean. The game was a real black box for a while.)

I currently only play on dragongoserver.net (user = wryse). Games are played asynchronously, much like play-by-forum. Typically, you’ll run several (some people run several dozen or more) games at once, so that any time you log in, you have a nice handful of moves to make. There are lots of free websites to play interactively as well.

I plan to review each of the 6 Master Set factions as I get comfortable with them. Getting to know how to play each faction is one of the major fun aspects of this game, and having 6 factions makes this a wonderful game for replayability.
