This list very likely has little interest to anyone else -- I'm just using it for my own purposes to track some games I really want to get to the table this year. However, I know how much us BGG'ers love our lists, so I'll leave this open for comments just in case you can't help yourself.

This is a list of games I already own -- some very recently and some for over a year or two -- which have either never been played or have been sorely neglected at best. My goal in 2013 is to get each of these to the table at least once.

The main reason most of these have not been played is simply because of their length. I rarely get to play 90-120 minute games and need to make an intentional effort to get friends together to get these to the table. And even then, it seems like there's always some new hotness which wins out. But no more! Screw you, new hotness -- this is the year for dusty old mediocrity to rise up and win the day!!!! Or something like that.

I picked this up recently in a math trade and shouldn't have too much trouble getting a few plays in with my lunch group.

PLAYED!

1/16/13: Played through one quick race at lunch and won, of course. Scott held the lead for most of the game, but I was still able to take just about all of the inside lanes and stay right behind him. The other two players kept getting blocked and pushed to the outside lane. Toward the end I finally pulled ahead and sailed to Caesar-approving victory!

Enjoyed the game for what it was. As others have said, a little strategy but overall not much substance. I like having a quick 6-player race game with some required planning and cunning. I do have a possible trade offer for it though, so I'll try to squeeze in a few more plays soon to see how I still feel about it.

I picked this up in a thrift store this past year. Ideally, I would love to plan out a 40's 20's speakeasy-themed party night and invite two other couples over to play this with my wife and I.

I just picked this up in an auction and haven't even looked at the rules yet. I know very little about this game other than it has a space theme and quite a few people seem to like it. I also know a few people who have less than stellar opinions of it, but it's such a classic that I'd really like to check it off my list.

PLAYED!

03/30/13: Got to play two back to back games of CE this weekend at the RinCon game day. I really enjoyed the group I played with and was specifically holding off until I could get this to the table with a few experienced players, which this certainly was. The overall idea of the game seemed clear and simple and we jumped into our first play. I was the "Filth" which I'm pretty sure we played wrong since nobody ever wanted to allow me as an ally so I never made it onto another planet. The game also ended before I got to take a single turn. So, my first game just resulted in me dumping lots of ships into the warp. The second game brought in two more players (up to 7 now) who were also very experienced so still a great group. They felt bad that I never got a turn before so they started with me, which was good since it, again, never made it back around. I did get a few planets this time so it was more enjoyable.

Overall, I would say that I enjoyed the experience, but that was much more due to the players than the game. Playing a game twice and only getting to take 1 turn, total, seems pretty off to me. Yes, there's participation and involvement during other players' turns, but still. Also, I don't really see a reason for allowing players to do a second encounter each turn. You're basically giving each player two turns in a row, therefore making it far more likely than some players will get no turns at all (the second game, at least two players never got their turn). I would play again, and I think I can see why others enjoy it, but this experience seemed to show me a very broken game. Fortunately, it did play very fast -- both games were about 30-45 minutes each.

Unfortunately, I think my copy is destined for the trade pile since I just can't see myself wanting to bring this to the table and teach/lead it.

I found an old version of this in a thrift store and my wife and played about half a game one evening. We enjoyed it enough that shortly after that (many months ago now) I picked up the latest version in a math trade and even spent a few extra bucks to get the fancy crayola dry-erase crayons. It has been sitting on the shelf longingly ever since.

This is another one I picked up in a trade after almost buying it through Tanga. I played through it once by myself to get a feel for the rules and have not been able to get it to the table since.

PLAYED!

3/16/13: Finally got this to the table with David. The rules, as I expected, were a bit of a beast to explain. Setup feels long and overcomplicated, and the game on the whole just feels a bit too fiddley. I did enjoy several aspects of it, but I certainly don't love it. I would like to see how it plays with 3 or 4.

This was one of the first eurogames I picked up two or three years ago when I was first really getting into the hobby. I found it used at Bookmans, played through it once or twice alone to learn the basics, but have yet to play it with another player. I rarely play two player games with anyone other than my wife and this isn't really her thing. So, it has languished in dusty shelf land. Of course, now that my kids are getting older, I'm hoping I can maybe rope one of them into learning this with me so I can have a regular partner to play through several of the campaigns with.

I preordered this thinking it would be a great family game. I was actually considering the Story Realms kickstarter at the time and found out about this instead, which was coming out in a month or two instead of a year. I read through the rules and have yet to set up a game night for us to get started. It's a bit more complex than I thought (my oldest two are 6 and 8) which has given me some hesitation, but definitely want to make an effort to at least take a stab at the first few chapters with them.

PLAYED!

This past week we spent three evenings after the littlest was in bed playing through Chapter 1. We just did 1 tile per night, so it took three sessions (hopefully the pace will pick up a bit now that we have most of the rules down). The kids loved it and really seemed to enjoy the story. The best moment was when we were surrounded by minions and I was taking a particularly harsh beating by the caterpillar. My 6 year old son's turn came up:

Me: "Okay buddy, what do you want to do?"
Kyle: "I want to search!"
Me: "We're kind of surrounded here, are you sure you don't want to attack someone?"
Kyle: "No, I want to search."
Me: "Okay, but I'm in pretty bad shape here. Why don't we hurry up and fight these guys off, then we can search."
Kyle: "I want to search."
Me: "Okay, fine." [he rolls the die, I flip top search card] "You find a Heal Scroll. You can use this to completely heal one of us. Do you want to use it to heal me?"
Kyle: "Sure!"

I'll never question him again.

Sadly, this one now needs to be added to the list as well. I had plans to play this at a game night this week so I didn't add it initially, but it didn't hit the table due to a hearty game of Space Cadets {scowls and shakes fist in air at New Hotness!!!}. Actually, Space Cadets was pretty cool so I certainly can't complain.

PLAYED!

Finally got this to the table this weekend with David and Rob. I enjoyed the game quite a bit and look forward to more plays of this. Flowed fairly quickly so I was pretty happy with the pace, although it slowed down a bit towards the end, as usual, as we were all calculating final potential points much more closely. Very eager to see how it plays with 4 or 5 players, although I fear the play time might be a bit much with too many new players.

I picked this up in trade at a local convention this past year and while it's not super high on my priority list, looks like it could be a fun casual game. I'd like to try to get in a play or two to see how it compares to other gateway games like TTR.

1/28/13: Played through a test game by myself to get a feel for the rules and game flow. At its heart it just feels like a simple race to get points and or resources (which are then converted to points). However, the big twist in this game is the battles -- trying to guess where the other players will go and either avoid them, or attack and destroy them! This is where I suspect it will shine with 4 or 5 players. This was obviously impossible to effectively simulate playing it by myself, so I'm even more eager to get this to the table now.

I bought this expansion map several months ago and still have yet to play a full game (got about 30 minutes into one at a convention before we had to stop for another event). Since I bought this, I've also printed off replacement money cards from artscow and my friend's dad built an awesome auction board which was then gifted to me, so my PG setup is fairly pimped out. This should be hitting the table regularly and it's just not. It's a shame which must be rectified.

PLAYED!

3/2/13: Got in a game of this during the Dice & Decks game night at Cartel. Played with Scott, his dad, and another new player, Dave, who ultimately took the win. Dave and I both powered 18 cities in the last round, but he had more money left for the tie-breaker. I do like that it played faster than the normal maps, although we still took our time and ran at about 2 1/2 hours since the other 3 were all new. The biggest wildcard seems to be the ecological plants, since they immediately become available. If one just happens to pop up at the right time when only 1 player can afford it, or when only one is left in the auction, it can be fairly significant. Dave picked up plant 50 (6 cities for no resources) almost completely uncontested mid-game, which gave him a nice advantage. Still, great game, and looking forward to more plays. Plus, since Scott's dad is the one who made my awesome auction board, it was cool to have him play with us and see it in action.

I was thrilled to thrift this for 99 cents over a year ago and have not played it since. I've played the game once before, but it was poorly explained to me so it wasn't the best experience. I also printed the 2-player rules so I'm eager to try those out with my wife, who enjoyed San Juan so she might be okay with this one. It's such a classic that I hate to see if up on the shelf so sad and lonely.

This is another one that I've owned for well over a year, but has only hit the table once. The rules are tricky enough that we messed up a few things and while I enjoyed it, would definitely love to play again correctly. I love the theme and components, but I also want to play it again to decide whether or not I actually like the gameplay itself.

TRADED

Finally decided to ditch this one since it just wasn't hitting the table and there are just too many other great games I'd rather play. This one is complicated to teach and a bit more confrontational than I like. I love the theme and components and really wanted to like the game, but alas, it has gone on to a new home. Just FYI, in trade I picked up Samarkand: Routes to Riches which is much more likely to see some play as it's more teachable and has a much shorter play time.

Played this once and enjoyed it, but like Reef Encounter the rules are a bit of a beast unless it's played regularly. I almost traded it away a few times, but kept deciding I wanted to have a race game in my collection. I want to get in one or two more plays of this to decide after all if it's worth keeping around.
