So after my first full year on BGG I have decided to submit my very first Geek List. I wanted to do something that might be a little fun to read. My fingers are crossed.

In my first year I have seen that acquiring new board games can bring almost as much joy as actual game play. There are a few geeks with pretty impressive collections and I imagine with those who have means, there is very little they couldn't do in the name of their hobby (*cough* build a house for games laugh). But I think I am in pretty good company when I say, for me, the hobby comes with a few more restrictions. In fact, I just started a buy-ban for 2013 because I went a little nuts last year whistle. However, all of this has gotten me to wondering, what else do we strive for besides acquiring new games? If money and time were no object and you could do or achieve any crazy thing related to board games, what would that be? Do you inject board games into another colorful dream of yours or is it something truly original and genuinely board game related? What is your

Super Duper Chocolate-Covered Board Game Fantasy?

So I hope that you will share your most drool-worthy fantasies with us, dream big and possibly give some us some new ideas for goals we can strive for, or allow us to just live vicariously in the fantasy. Thanks for contributing and happy gaming!

Smallworld was my gateway game so it seems fitting to have it be the first addition to my first Geek List.

I have a son and he's only 2 yrs old but at this point, I can't have any super duper fantasies that don't include him. I love to travel and was blessed to do a bit of it in my pre-mom days. I regard travel as an indispensable part of a child's education, especially international travel. So when my son is old enough, I would love to be able to travel to far flung places and beyond sight-seeing, teach him the history and culture, meet locals and play geographically appropriate board games while we are there such as:

Tzolkin in the Yucatan Penisula
A Few Acres of Snow in Montreal
Letters from Whitechapel in London
Samurai in Japan
Fresco in Rome

Not necessarily these games. I'm thinking on the fly but you get the idea. There are so many possibilities. With one child I suppose this isn't a CRAZY fantasy but my husband and I are planning on adding a new baby gamer to our family (fingers crossed) so the idea becomes much more extravagant. I think my fantasy is more of one where I incorporated board games into an existing dream. I'm very curious to see what other people come up with.

Hmmmm, board game related fantasy . . .

I'd like to move my family to the Shire,
decorate my hobbit hole just right,
teach my son to grow longbottom leaf,
carve and sell pipes by trade,
have a little space for growing mushrooms,
and put away the ale at night.

I could get by in the Shire, oh yeah

At the moment, my husband I are so incredibly busy with our 3 kids that we barely have time together. Life is so hectic and chaotic for us right now.

My fantasy would be to go away on a week (or two) vacation, with my husband- alone (sorry kids), on the beach, sipping margaritas, and cracking out Twilight Struggle.
Just quiet, no interruptions, no one asking where their shoes are, no one spilling milk, and no tantrums (well...none until my husband loses )

My ultimate board game fantasy is for there to be a game based on the Knights & Merchants PC game. You build the farm to produce grain. You build the windmill and take the grain there to produce flour. You build the bakery and take flour there to produce bread. Your serfs take the bread to the Inns and storehouses. It is my favorite micromanagement. real time strategy. medieval. PC game. There are several games that have various aspects of this, but none that combine them all and include a decent army building/battles mechanic.

I'd love to have a big hall with all my games set up and ready to be played. I can just walk in with my friends and start playing. After we finish, some housekeepers will reset the games to the initial state. That would save so much time.

(Maybe except for games that have different setup for different number of players I guess)

Actually my boardgame fantasy is pretty simple.

All I'd like is to feel as perky at 10pm as I do at 10am. Surely that's not too much to ask?

You see I have a wonderful husband to play games with, fantastic games to play, and we're both at home together most evenings, so theoretically, once the children are in bed we could have a good 3 or 4 hours gaming every single evening. The reality is that though we mostly do get in one game most evenings, after one game (most games we're playing last 1 hour or less)I usually feel too exhausted to start something else.

Still, I'm pretty delighted with our gaming life, and we do get daytime play at the weekend so I think things are pretty chocolate covered already!

Wargames.

Expensive, sometimes horribly. Thin paper boards. Chits that should be clipped to fit in hexes. Long rulebooks. Tables, modifiers.

Sometimes I try, show a game to my wife and start a conversations with "Don't you think war is fantastic?" etc., but she's unimpressed. Don't have other people to play with.

Wargames are mysterious. Do I buy a game that I can play on and on, or a "simulation" of a battle/history? Play once and say "that was interesting how it happened, now I'm done"? After all, battles rarely happened when both sides were equal in power. On the contrary.

How much creativity there is in a wargame, when we know that historically someone won and usually because of good reasons?

I know I'll buy a wargame someday. But now it has to remain a fantasy

My fantasy would be to design the next big boardgame. I am much more analytical than creative, so that is why it is a fantasy.

The best thing about inventing a game like Catan or Dominion would be:

1. Discovering the next "grail game", enjoying the game myself, and having other people enjoy it.

2. Introducing a wider audience to modern boardgames, allowing more quality face-to-face interaction and quality family time.

3. Royalty money, and perhaps even the chance to make a career of it.

I'm a librarian. I like being organised. I like things to be in order. And right now the overflowing game shelves and the piles of games covering our dining room table are beginning to drive me insane.

So, my current Super Duper Chocolate-covered Board Game Fantasy is to have the perfect game storage solution, with plenty of room to continue adding to the collection for many years to come.

What I want is an enormous Compactus. I'd have separate aisles for Euro-style games, wargames, abstract games, thematic games, party games and so on, and the games will be sorted by size, then shelved by title.

Well, if we're going all out...

I want an airship, equipped with accommodation and capable of long distance flight, with a saloon setup for boardgaming. The first game would be Fortune and Glory.

Graf Zeppelin Dining

Airships and Zeppelins have always fascinated me. The passenger airships had gorgeous art deco fittings, overnight cabins and complete kitchens... they served chilled wine, oysters and caviar.

They also had asbestos lined smoking rooms, but times have changed.

I read that on one trans-Atlantic flight, the Graf Zeppelin flew at only 30m and passengers trolled for fish. Fishing from an aircraft: let's see Bear Grylls do that.

They would have needed to slow down to do it, too, because the cruising speed was over 130km/h (80mph). So an airship would be perfect for touring and sight-seeing, and would have ample space for a games library and tables to play on:

The "Writing Lounge" on the Graf

So I could travel the world, collecting like-minded folks for a few days, a couple of weeks, a month here or there. We could go practically anywhere at our own pace. Essen? BGG-Con? Easy! Ms Shug and her son would be very welcome.

We could play and play. Clear the tables and dance. Slow down and trawl for bluefin.

Atlantic Star in Rio?
Campaign Manager in Washington?

How about Amun-Re at Giza?
