This might be fun.

The cooking metaphor is not mine. Many fans of the great game Carcassonne have mentioned that the base game and expansions allow us to mix and match according to taste. It seems like many have found the perfect recipe for the game. And I'd like to see the great combinations out there collected in one GeekList for future reference.

So here is the contest: record as a GeekList item (choose the central or key expansion in your combination) your favorite combination of Carcassonne and its official expansions. Include any house rules or details with the combination. The item (recipe) with the most thumbs on February 20th 2013 will recieve 100 from me. Second and third place will receive 25 and 10 respectively. I'll split the in the case of ties. Be sure your combination is not already on the list. Multiple entries are allowed and encouraged.

Each entry should follow this format:

Title (Think up a name for your Carcassonne concoction. Carcoction?)
Ingredients
A brief description, 250 words or less, of what makes this combination fun
Serves (how many players it best serves)

Example:

Aliens & Apostles

Ingredients
Carcassonne
Carcassonne: Inns & Cathederals (tiles only)
Carcassonne: Abbey & Mayor (two abbey tiles only)
Carcassonne: Corn Circles II
Games Quarterly Expansion
Rules for King and Robber Baron
Each player maintains a hand of three tiles

Description
This combination keeps the overall game streamlined--only regular meeples are used. Yet it has enough extra (and strange) tiles and rules to keep it interesting.

Serves: 2

A few words about imaginary combinations: they are welcome but they must identify themselves as such and they must be possible e.g. playing the game with only three sets of Traders & Builders.

Also welcome are comments, corrections, and statements of outrage.

Good luck everyone and happy cooking!

Update 1/23/2013: I just want to say I am amazed at these early entries. The possible combinations and alterations of the game seem limitless. Thanks for the creativity everyone!

Update 2/21/2013: And the winners are...

Chateau bouillabaisse

Ingredients
Carcassonne
Carcassonne: Inns & Cathederals
Carcassonne: The Phantom
Rules for King and Robber Baron
Each player draws their tile at the end of their turn.

Description

Some people clutter up their Carcassonne meals with too many herbs and spices, which just hide the tastes of the original ones that make it such a simple and pleasing 'gateway' dish. The addition of the transparent Phantom pieces adds a touch of modern and creative flair, possibly appealing to a wider audience.

Serves: Best serving 2, though will serve more if you have extra time on your hands and the players don't want to take their dish too seriously.

Double Stack with Meeple Syrup

Ingredients

2 Carcassonne base games, mixed together
1 “Inns and Cathedrals” Expansion
1 “Traders and Builders” Expansion
2 “The River” Expansions
1 “The River II” Expansion

Put all river tiles in a bag before set up, except the source and mouth tiles of the river. Start the game by placing one source tile, then players take turns placing all the remaining normal river tiles. Players should let the river go this way and that, taking on a life of its own. When normal river tiles are gone, players take turns attaching mouth of the river tiles until all river ending places have been “capped”.

Each player keeps a hand of two tiles.

Playable in 2 ½ to 4 ½ hours, depending on appetite.

Serves: 4

Description

A feast for those who aren’t in a hurry and prefer to languish over a meal. The vast river network and many extra land tiles make for fascinating (and sometimes dizzying) field diversity. Get ready for a rich and complex culinary journey, and come hungry!

Inns & Cathedrals
Games Quarterly Expansion

Each player draws their next tile at the end of their turn.

Before the game begins, randomly remove three tiles per player from the game, keeping their identities unknown.

Description
The secret spices in this recipe are the unknown factor when the game has become very familiar to all the players; in this version, nobody can know for sure that any specific tile is still in the supply.

The Strategic Twist

Ingredients:
Carcassonne base game
Inns and Cathedrals
Abbey and Mayor
Traders and Builders
The Phantom
The Cult
Seige
King and Robber Baron
Bridges, Castles and Bazaars (no auctions, tiles and pieces only)
The Ferries (this is the key ingredient as the twisting of the ferry can keep the Robber Baron constantly changing hands as ever longer roads are completed without increasing the total number of completed roads)

Directions:
Mix the ingredients together well. Place in a bag and shake. Once they are well mixed, each player draws one tile. The first player places his tile (and followers if desired) and draws another tile from the bag. Play continues until there are no more tiles left in the bag.

Expected Playing Time:
2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours

Serves:
2 to 4 strategists but is best with two.

EPIC Carcassonne

Ingredients:
You can play with ALL expansions. Also, you need a big bag.

Description
Throw all the tiles in the bag, along with the six 50/100 scoretiles.

Now decide how long you want to play. For example, if you wish to have approximately a 2-hour game, the game ends one round after the fourth scoretile has been drawn.

Whenever a scoretile is drawn, it is put aside and the active player draws another tile from the bag.
When the fourth (or fifth for a longer game, or third for a shorter one) scoretile is drawn, each player including the one who has drawn the scoretile has one more turn, then the game ends.

Serves:
Two to six players, but best with 2 or 3.

Accountant's meal

Ingredients
Carcassonne
Carcassone: The River I (or II, if you have/prefer)
Carcassonne: Inns & Cathedrals
Carcassonne: Abbey & Mayor (tiles only, can add the Mayor as well, it it suits you)
Carcassonne: Traders & Builders
Carcassonne: King and Robber Baron
Carcassonne: The Tower (only the tile dispenser)

Description
This combination adds lots of different strategies, and it is perfect to make the game interesting for those hardcore boardgamers that think of Carcassonne as just a fancy new version of domino.

The King and Robber Baron and the Traders & Builders rules add a mathematical component to the scoring, that add a spicy layer of complexity to the game, while keeping the addictive flavor of the game.

The Abbey tiles add some freshness to keep "traders" and "cathedral-builders" players on their toes.

Meeple-flavored Popcorn

Ingredients
Carcassonne
Carcassonne: The Tower
Carcassonne: Princess and the Dragon
Carcassonne: The Leper (fan expansion)
Carcassonne: Phantom
Carcassonne: Inns & Cathedrals
The Count of Carcassonne
Carcassonne: The Plague
Carcassonne: The Festival
Carcassonne: The Flier
Add any other tilesets you like.

Description
The main idea here is to stuff as much meeples as possible in the game, keeping it focused on expansions that make meeples being removed or moved around the table, causing as much meeple mayhem as possible.

It have a classic flavor if you keep with only normal and big meeples, but you can add expansions and rules for another meeples if your guests are more used to exotic flavors.

You can add some alcohol to this recipe by adding The Catapult - do that at your own risk.

I suggest keeping a copy of the annotated rules handy during the degustation.

Fish Fried Dumplings

Ingredients
Carcassonne
Carcassonne: The River I AND II
Carcassonne: The Ferries
Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers (just the hut counters)
1 six-sided die

Description
Deploy the River tiles as normal, using the rules for combining both rivers. During his turn, a player can choose to put a hut on the river instead of putting a meeple on a feature of the tile. When doing this, the player rolls the die, and the number rolled is the number of fish found on that part of the river. Each fish gives the player 1 point, scored immediately. The hut remains there until the end of the game. The players can only put a single hut per river segment (unobstructed river succession of river tiles; roads and cities crossing the river cut it in different segments). Remaining huts can be played at water features during the game, using the same die rules.

The Big Easy

Ingredients
Carcassonne
Inns and Cathedrals
The River II
The King
The Phantom

Description
This is a nice easy-playing combination for players who have already played the base game and want a little more. Inns and Cathedrals provide additional substance, while The King, The Phantom, and The River II spice things up without being overpowering.
As an added bonus, everything fits inside the base game box.

Serves:
Four, for a nice casual game.

Players draw at the end of their turn.

Description:
Its basically a mad mess of building with a little bit of intensity due to the dragon and the leper. I like to call the the taco salad of Carcassonne.

Serves: 2-5, depending on the amount of food each person eats.
