Well, what is it? Pirates, zombies, medieval farming, empire building, World War II, space trade, renaissance Italy, fantasy battles, the Napoleonic wars, feudal Japan, the Cold War, the Stone Age, or something else?

I never understood the Japanese fascination with animated hardcore, much less animated softcore. Also, I find the artwork disturbing. Buxom, underage white girls with oversized, giant-pupiled eyes set too far apart, small mouth and no nose. How can I take this game seriously?

My number one turn-off theme is Zombies. I think this is exacerbated by the fact that there are gazillions of them. yuk

It's not my most despised theme -- that is Zombies, above -- but I'd have to say that Tolkien is a big turn-off for me. I'm not a Tolkien hater -- I enjoyed the LOTR movies -- but I also don't get aroused whenever I see it. I certainly don't get excited for the latest exploration of the minutia of Middle-Earth, since these games often like to reward the people who've memorized the bloodline of some dwarf mentioned in passing in the Silmarillion.

This extends to generic fantasy stuff that wishes it was Tolkien. (And also extends to videogames and stuff.) I've spent enough time with elves and stuff. I don't need any more. Fortunately, the production philosophy of "if the theme CAN be fantasy it SHOULD be fantasy" seems to be dying down.

I know pirates are "cool" and all, and there's that whole Talk Like a Pirate Day thing. But I don't like them. And I won't play their games.

It's not really fair because there aren't that many games with this theme, but I get a slight headache every time I see a superhero game. I can enjoy a good superhero comic, but when it comes to board games, my interest is lukewarm at best. One reason is that I don't think the aesthetics, i.e. muscles, masks, spandex, bright colours, and heroic poses, fit board games well. As an old-school Eurogamer, I prefer more sober aesthetics; I guess fans of superhero games would find my taste quite boring. Another reason is that the theme is slightly immature, but to be taken dead seriously; I don't mind being childish, as long as I don't have to pretend I'm not.

Sure, it was a fantastic war that shook history.

Sure, there were lots of cool battles revolving around it.

Yeah, I love me some CC:E (I rate it a 10).

But hey... you know, there were some other wars, folks!

While this theme does not qualify as repellent it definitely is near the top of my list in terms of themes where my attitude is "don't even try to get me to play that game."

First of all, I'm a Eurogamer and I love El Grande! However, I'm deadly tired of Reneissance games, no matter if they're about trade, war, or politics. I think this theme's been done to death, and it's time to move on to other historical epochs.

I'm not really consistent here, though. I'm still not tired of games with an Egyptian theme...

I love the genre - big Gibson fan, enjoyed the Foundation series, read Snow Crash in essentially one sitting. I enjoy Science Fiction movies (though I don't go out of my way to watch movies of any type). And I don't even avoid Sci Fi games...its just that they've tended to fall flat for me.

So maybe not exactly in the spirit of the geeklist title (as in despise), but just a weird thing for me.

Looking at my bgg collection here are how they are rated: the abstract Alien City (8), Panic Station (7), Galaxy Trucker (7), King of Tokyo (5), Ricochet Robots (5), Starship Catan (5), Perry Rhodan (5), Warhammer 40K (5), RFtG (4), Kung Fu Samurai on giant Robot Island (4), Eminant Domain (3), Outpost (3), Fortress America (3), Ascending Empires (2), Ecplise (2).

Dragons. It just have been to much dragons. In boardgames, and also in videogames, especially after Skyrim. Even Carcassonne having a dragon expansion. Dragons cool, and have always been a important part of fantasy. But sometimes you need something fresh.
